ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The Ichabods got solid starts from Mark Biesma and Taylor Gentry as they opened a four-game series at Missouri Western with a double-header sweep. Washburn won the opener 2-1 and took the second game 8-2.

The Ichabods improved to 6-4 overall and 6-4 in the MIAA and they'll wrap up the series with the Griffons (6-7, 4-4 MIAA) with two more games Monday starting at 1 p.m.

Biesma earned his first win of the year as he threw all seven innings in the opener. He struck out six without a walk and allowed an unearned run off four hits. The Griffons scored their only run of the game off an error in the third inning to tie the game at 1-1. Biesma then got the next batter to ground into a double play to end the inning and the Griffons got just two base runners the final four innings.

Washburn opened scoring when Taylor Herrington led off the game with a walk, stole second and then scored on a single from Parker Gibson. The Ichabods then got the winning run in the fourth after David Gauntt was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a groundout and then scored on a hit from Kyle Carnahan.

The Ichabods trailed 1-0 and didn't have a hit in the second game until the fifth inning when they took the lead for good with three runs on four hits. Gauntt doubled and scored on a single from Carnahan. Cole Gardner then singled to right and Connor Crimmins drove in Carnahan and Gardner with a double.

Gentry earned his first decision of the year as he pitched the first six innings. He struck out five and allowed five hits and the Griffons' first run.

He got some insurance runs from the Washburn offense with one in the seventh and two each in the eighth and ninth. Carnahan and Gardner drove in runs with singles and Matt Jackson had a two-run double.
