Crimmins ties game in seventh with homer but Lopers go on to win series opener

KEARNEY, Neb. – The Lopers broke a 6-6 tie with three runs in the bottom of the seventh to lead to a 9-6 win in the series opener Thursday night. The two teams will resume the four-game MIAA series Friday with a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
 
Washburn (17-16, 16-13 MIAA) tied the game at 6-6 with a leadoff home run by Connor Crimmins in the top of the seventh but the Ichabods didn't score again. The Lopers responded with three runs in the bottom of the seventh off three doubles.
 
The Ichabods left two on base in the eight and one in the ninth as UNK closed out the win. Hank Wellborn (0-1) suffered his first loss of the year as the Lopers scored three runs off him in 2 1/3 innings of relief. Mark Biesma started the game and allowed the first six runs, four earned, through 4 1/3 innings.
 
Washburn took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first as Riley Price drove in Parker Gibson with a single and then he scored on David Gauntt's home run to left center.
 
UNK scored two in the bottom of the first and then took its first lead at 4-3 with two in the third inning. Kyle Carnahan scored on a wild pitch in the fourth inning to tie the game but UNK scored one each in the fourth and fifth. Carnahan then doubled and scored in the sixth to pull Washburn within one run and then Crimmins' homer in the seventh tied the game.
 
Gauntt, Carnahan and Crimmins each batted 2 for 4 to give them six of Washburn's eight runs. The Lopers got 14 hits.
