TOPEKA, Kan. – Washburn tied the game with two runs in the sixth Tuesday night at Falley Field against Emporia State but the Hornets broke the tie with a run in the ninth for a 7-6 win.
 
Washburn fell to 18-19 in the non-conference game and will continue action Friday at 2 p.m. with a doubleheader against Lincoln. The win improved ESU's record to 26-14 and tied the season series between the two schools at 3-3.
 
An ESU fielding error in the sixth put Parker Gibson on second base and Corey Gragg on third. Dakota Kell then hit a pinch-hit single to right centerfield to drive them both in and tie the score at 6-6.
 
Each team went scoreless after that until Emporia State manufactured a run in the top of the ninth off two singles and a sacrifice bunt.
 
Gragg then walked to lead off the ninth but the Hornet defense later turned a double play to end the game.
 
Kyle Carnahan increased his hitting streak to 16 games as he went 2 for 4. He drove in Riley Price with a single as part of a three-run fourth that gave Washburn a 4-3 win. Parker Gibson and David Gauntt also had RBI hits in the inning.
 
Washburn used a full platoon of pitchers with nine different hurlers getting one inning of work. Drew Ridley started and gave up the first ESU run. Maustin Otterstatter gave up ESU's game-winner to fall to 3-4 this year. Connor Brady, Hank Wellborn and AJ Green each pitched hitless and scoreless innings.
 
Gibson went 2 for 5 and scored twice for Washburn. The Ichabods got 10 hits off four Emporia State pitchers. The Hornets also recorded 10 hits.
