Season Statistics EMPORIA, Kan. – The Ichabods left seven runners on base and gave up a six-run eighth inning to fall 10-1 Thursday evening at Emporia State in the opening game of the MIAA tournament.
Washburn (25-23) must win Friday at 6 p.m. at ESU to force a third and deciding game on Saturday. The Hornets improved to 35-15.
The Hornets got on the board first with a two-run home run in the second inning. The Ichabods got one of them back in the third as
Riley Krane reached on an error and eventually scored. A double from
Connor Crimmins moved him to third and then he scored on a groundout from
Parker Gibson.
That was Washburn's only run of the game as they left runners stranded in six of the nine innings.
Starter
Brett Ash kept the Ichabods in the game until the Hornets erupted with six runs off seven hits in the eighth. Ash fell to 5-3 as he allowed all 10 runs off 12 hits. He struck out six and walked two.
Krane ended the game as Washburn's only multi-hit player as he went 2 for 4. Four other Ichabods had one hit each to give Washburn six total, all off Emporia State starter Shawn Talkington, 7-2.
The Hornets ended with 13 hits including the homer and two doubles. Emporia State had three errors while Washburn had none.
