PITTSBURG, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods shot 71 percent from the field in the second half missing only six shots en route to a 76-63 win over Pittsburg State on Wednesday night in John Lance Arena.
In the second half with the Ichabods leading 54-54,
Javion Blake hit a 3-pointer to push the Ichabods up four and then layups by
Cameron Wiggins and
Brady Skeens stretched the lead to eight at 62-54 with 8:27 to play. After a pair of free throws by Josiah Gustafson, the Ichabods ripped off a 19-6 to go up 14 at 74-60 with 3:59 to play in the game.
The Gorillas would get no closer than 11 the rest of the way after a 3-pointer with 1:46 to play as the Ichabods picked up the 12-point win as Washburn (7-2, 3-1 MIAA) won its 14th game in the last 16 meetings over Pittsburg State (7-4, 2-3 MIAA). Washburn was 15 of 21 in the second half from the field scoring 46 points while hitting all six 3-point attempts.
The score was tied 29-29 at the break after the Gorillas led by as many as eight points in the opening stanza at 25-17 with 9:59 to play. However the Ichabods outscored the Gorillas 12-4 the rest of the half to tie the score. Wiggins scored five points during the run for Washburn as the Ichabod defense forced five Gorilla turnovers. Washburn was 11 of 31 for a 36 percent clip in the first half while the Gorillas were 10 of 27 for a 37 percent average.
Wiggins led the Ichabods with a career-high 26 points hitting all six 3-pointers going 8 of 13 from the field overall.
Javion Blake scored 19 dishing out four assists and
Brady Skeens had 10 points with eight rebounds along with four steals and two blocks.
Robert Christopher led the Ichabods with 10 rebounds and
Randall Smith had six assists scoring two points.

Washburn finished the game shooting 50 percent from the field going 26 of 52 overall hitting 9 of 15 3-point attempts. Washburn outrebounded the Gorillas 40 to 27 overall and outscored Pitt State 28 to 12 in the paint. The Gorillas were 18 of 49 from the field for a 37 percent average while hitting 10 of 19 shots from 3-point range.

Last meeting with Missouri Southern(Dec. 6, 2014) TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods men's basketball team fell behind 21-7 after the second media timeout and could not recover as Missouri Southern picked up an 87-61 win on Saturday in Lee Arena.
The Lions shot 55 percent in the game and 59 percent in the second half en route to the 26-point win. After the Lions jumped out to the 21-7 lead in the opening frame, the Lions would go on to lead by 18 at the break taking a 37-19 advantage into the locker room. Washburn was held to 7 of 31 shooting in the first half going 1 of 9 from 3-point range.
In the second half, the Lions would go on to lead by as many as 29 points riding a 6 of 11 performance from 3-point range leading to the win as the Ichabods would get no closer than 16 in the stanza.
Alex North led the Ichabods with 14 points adding seven rebounds as the only Washburn player who would reach double figures.
David Salach had seven rebounds and
Kyle Wiggins scored nine points.
Cameron Wiggins came off the bench to score eight points hitting all three shots including both 3-point attempts.
The Lions had six player reach doubles figure-scoring as Taevaunn Prince and Blaine Miller each had 17.
The Ichabods finished 20 of 58 from the field overall going 6 of 21 from 3-point range. Washburn did hit 15 of 20 free throw attempts in the game.
Last time out for Missouri Southern(Dec. 16, 2015) The Missouri Southern men's basketball team held off a late rally from visiting Emporia State and the Lions defeated the Hornets 78-73 tonight on Robert Corn Court inside the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.
Taevaunn Prince led the way for the Lions with 31 points and 10 rebounds, going 10-15 from the field and 11-16 from the free throw line. Charlie Brown scored 23 points and added six boards, going 6-11 from the field and 9-9 from the charity stripe. Austin Wright scored seven points and dished out five assists, tying a career-high in helpers.
Emporia (4-5, 2-2 MIAA) was led offensively by 21 points from Terrence Moore on 9-17 shooting.
A jumper from Prince gave the Lions a seven-point lead (13-6) with 14:28 left in the half, but a jumper from the Hornets' Moore cut the Southern lead to just two (15-13) two minutes later.
A jumper from Prince with 11:38 to go capped a 5-0 run for the Lions and gave the team a seven-point lead (20-13). Emporia got to within three with four minutes to go, but a 12-0 run for the Lions to end the half made the score 43-28, Southern at the break.
A layup from Prince with 15:11 left in the second half gave the Lions a 48-36 lead and a pair of free throws from Vince Fritz with 10:44 left made the Southern lead 16 (56-40). A 28-13 run by the Hornets, however, got ESU back to within one (69-68) with 2:23 to go in the game.
A pair of free throws from DJ Feitl the next trip down pushed the lead back to three and a defensive stop, followed by a three-point play from Brown gave the Lions a 74-68 lead with 1:35 to go.
Two free throws from Brown pushed the Lions' lead to eight (76-68) with 40 seconds left, and the Lions held on for the win.
Southern shot 52 percent from the field and 38 percent from long-range, while making 79 percent of its free throws. The Lions forced 11 ESU turnovers, scoring 19 points off of the miscues.
