WICHITA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabod baseball team remained perfect on the season sweeping Southwest Baptist in the process in the four-game series opening MIAA play with a 7-4 win in game one and taking the second 5-4. Washburn is 7-0 for the first time since 1948.
Game 1 - Washburn 7, Southwest Baptist 4In the opener, the Ichabods jumped on the Bearcats early scoring five runs on two hits capped by
Connor Crimmins' second grand slam in as many days helping Washburn take the early lead. In the second inning, Washburn added two more on a 2-RBI double by
Tanner Triggs which scored
Kyle Carnahan and Davuid Gauntt. Ichabod starter Zach Linquist pitched six scoreless innings picking up the win striking out three. The Bearcats scored four in the top of the seventh off the Ichabod bullpen.Â
Carnahan and Triggs each recorded two hits in the game.
Game 2 - Washburn 5, Southwest Baptist 4After the Bearcats scored one in the top of the first, the Ichabods came back with two in the bottom of the second  when
Payton Soicher recorded a two-out single to center scoring
Corey Gragg and Triggs who both reached after being hit by pitches. Southwest Baptist tied the score at 2-2 with a solo run in the third, but again Washburn came back in its next at bat scoring two more taking back the lead at 4-2. Gauntt recorded an RBI with a double and then later scored on a wild pitch putting the Ichabods up by two. In the fifth, the Ichabods added a solo run on an RBI single by Gauntt adding to the Ichabod lead. The Bearcats rallied to score two in the top of the ninth cutting the Ichabod lead to 5-4, but
Ryne Dowling shut the door picking up the save after getting a win yesterday.
Eric Schmid tossed six innings for the win for Washburn striking out eight batters.
Gauntt, Soicher and
Riley Krane each had two hits in the game to lead the Ichabod attack.
Washburn is scheduled for a single nine inning game against Minnesota-Crookston on Saturday in Wichita starting at 1 p.m. at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
