TOPEKA, Kan. -- The No. 6/19-ranked Washburn Ichabod baseball team split a doubleheader with Emporia State on Saturday afternoon at Falley Field. Washburn and the Hornets will wrap up the four-game slate back in Emporia on Sunday starting at 1 p.m.
Prior to the first game, a ceremony was held to honor former Ichabod head baseball coach Steve Anson who spent 35 years in the Ichabod dugout. A No. 19 sign was unveiled in left center field and commerative hats were given away before the games. A photogallery and the video will be posted as soon as it becomes available at wusports.com
Game 1 - WU 6, ESU 1The Hornets took the early an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second, but the Ichabods came back with five runs in the bottom of the frame to take the 5-1 lead.
Connor Crimmins led off the inning and was hit by a pitch and then scored on
Tanner Triggs' double to right center.
Corey Gragg singled and then
Tanner Johnson drove in Triggs and the
Payton Soicher's two RBI single socred both Gragg and Johnson staking the Ichabods to the lead. Washburn added a solo run in the bottom of the third on an RBI double by Triggs scoring Crimmins and that was all the run support Ichabod starter
Mike Hefferan would need as he improved to 3-0 on the season striking out seven without any walks scattering six hits. Triggs finished with three hits in the opener driving in two as did Soicher.
Game 2 - ESU 14, WU 6The Hornets avoided the sweep scoring in each inning minus the fifth in a 14-6 win. The Ichabods scored three runs in the third inning on a 3-run homer by
Kyle Carnahan scoring
Parker Gibson and Riley Kriave who both singled in the inning. The home run cut the Hornet lead to 8-3 at the time. Washburn scored three more in the sixth inning when
Tanner Johnson scored on a wild pitch and Gibson drove in a run with a single and
Alex Head drew a bases-loaded walk. Washburn was held to five hits and recorded three errors in the game as Zach Linquest took the loss allowing seven earned runs striking out three.Â
