Ichabod men's basketball team starts postseason with Griffons Tuesday

  Opening Tip
•    The Washburn Ichabods will open postseason play on Tuesday night when they will host Missouri Western at 7 p.m. on Schendel Court at Lee Arena.
•   The Ichabods (15-12) are the No. 6 seed and the Griffons (11-17) are the No. 11 seed.
•   The Ichabods are coming off an 86-76 win over Emporia State sweeping the regular season series with the Hornets.
•   Missouri Western has won its last two games after topping Central Missouri 63-62.
•   The Ichabods and Griffons split the regular season series with Washburn winning in Topeka on Jan. 13 in a 78-67 win.
•   The Griffons topped the Ichabods six days ago in a 74-66 win on Feb. 24 in St. Joseph.
•   Washburn leads the all-time series 51-36.
•   The winner between the Ichabods and the Griffons will advance to Kansas City and will take on Missouri Southern at noon on Friday in Municipal Auditorium.
•   The Ichabods are 33-18 all-time in the MIAA Tournament and 20-4 in MIAA Tournament home games.

•   Overall the Ichabods have a balanced scoring attack with four players averaging at least 10.1 points per game and they have six averaging at least 6.1 ppg.
•   Washburn is seventh in the MIAA in scoring at 74.6 ppg and seventh in scoring defense allowing 74.6 ppg … the Ichabods have scored 2,015 points this season and have allowed 2,014 points.
•   Washburn is second in the MIAA in field goal percentage defense holding opponents to 41 percent shooting.
•   The Ichabods are +2.7 in rebound margin this season, which is fifth in the MIAA … the Ichabods lead the MIAA in rebounding at 38.3 per game and second in the league in offensive rebounds at 12.2 per game.
•   Christian Ulsaker has played in 114 games at Washburn in his career, which is the most by an current Ichabod.
•   Javion Blake's 370 points is second on the Ichabod freshman scoring chart as he passed Greg Wilson for second against Missouri Western … the freshman scoring record is 380 points set by Washburn all-time points leader Gary Carrier from the 1981-82 season … Blake's 52 3-pointers are second on the Ichabod freshman chart … the freshman record is 54 set by Shannon Kruger during the 1998-99 season.
•   Blake is looking to become the first Ichabod freshman to lead the team in scoring since Gary Carrier led the squad in scoring during the 1981-82 season after averaging 12.3 ppg. Entering the MIAA Tournament, Blake is scoring 13.7 ppg and needs 11 points to break Carrier's freshman season point total which sits on top of the Ichabod freshman scoring chart. Blake is second on the team with 52 3-pointers made and his .409 3-point field goal percentage is fourth on the Ichabod freshman chart.
•   Cameron Wiggins has hit 57 3-pointers this season, which is third on the Ichabods on the Ichabod sophomore chart … the sophomore record is 83 set by Todd Alexander during the 1990-91 season … Shannon Kruger is second on the chart with 69.
•   Randall Smith's 119 assists this season are third on the Ichabod sophomore class chart … Jordan Canfield's 183 assists during the 1993-94 season is the sophomore class record … Bobby Sumler recorded 127 during the 1986-87 season for second.
•   Brady Skeens 9.9 rebounds per game average is sixth on the Ichabod single season chart … he has recorded 267 rebounds this season which 13th on the Washburn single season rebound chart.

Missouri Western head coach Brett Weiberg . . .

•   brings 16 years of collegiate coaching experience to Missouri Western and has experience in coaching at a multitude of levels. He began his coaching career in 1998 as an assistant at Blinn Junior College in Brenham, Texas. Following stints at NAIA Wayland Baptist University and Division I Texas-San Antonio, he found a home at Northern Oklahoma College where he spent five years as an assistant before becoming the head coach in 2006.
 
 Last Time Out For The Ichabods
Washburn 86,  Emporia State 76 -- Feb. 27, 2016
EMPORIA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods swept the regular season series with Emporia State picking up an 86-76 win on Saturday.
Washburn led 40-34 at the half pushed by a 14-point stretch where Cameron Wiggins scored all of the Ichabods points. Washburn shot 64 percent in the first half hitting 16 of 25 shots while going 4 of 7 from 3-point range.
In the second half, the Hornets  cut the lead to one with at 58-57 with 10:04 to play before Washburn would go up seven after a 3-pointer by Andy Wilson and layup by Christian Ulsaker followed by a free throw by Jeremy Lickteig.
Back to back 3-pointers by the Hornets cut the lead back to one with 7:34 to go, but Wiggins hit a pair of 3-pointers with a Tyas Martin layup in between pushing the advantage back to nine with 5:24 left.
Washburn would go on to lead by 12 twice in the final 3:14 left.
Washburn (15-12, 11-11 MIAA) was led by Wiggins' 20 points as he hit 6 of 11 3-pointer and 7 of 15 from the field overall. Ulsaker recorded his second double double of his career 18 points and 10 rebounds. Brady Skeens had 17 points and nine rebounds hitting 7 of 8 from the field playing four minutes in the first half. Javion Blake had seven points adding seven assists.
Terrence Moore led four Hornets (13-15, 10-12 MIAA) with 20 points.
The Ichabods were 61 percent from the field overall while the Hornets were limited to 37 percent from the field.  
 
 About Missouri Western
   Missouri Western is 11-17 overall this season and finished 11-13 in MIAA play.
•   The Griffons have gone 1-11 on the road this season and 1-10 in MIAA road games winning at Central Oklahoma in overtime 88-84.
•   Missouri Western topped Central Missouri 63-62 last time out to end the regular season and have won two straight overall including a win over Washburn on Feb. 24 in St. Joseph.
•   Trey Sampson leads the team with 12.0 ppg and Aaron Emmanuel is averaging 11.2 ppg.
•   Overall the Griffons are averaging 71.7 ppg while allowing 76.0 ppg.

 Series History with Missouri Western
   Tuesday's meeting will be the 88th between the two schools with Washburn leading the series 51-36.
•   The Ichabods are 27-21 against MWSU in MIAA games and 22-10 in Lee Arena and 29-12 in games played in Topeka overall.
•   The Ichabods are 20-23 in games played in St. Joseph against the Griffons.
•   In the MIAA Tournament the Ichabods are 3-4 against the Griffons. Since joining the MIAA, the Ichabods are 9-18 in MIAA games played in St. Joseph.
•   The Ichabods lead 5-4 in overtime games including the 56-52 win two years ago in St. Joseph.         
  
 Last meeting with Missouri Western
(Feb. 24, 2016) ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabods lost on Wednesday night to Missouri Western falling 74-66 at the MWSU Fieldhouse. The Ichabods led by four at the break at 34-30 after hitting 4 of 8 3-point attempts shooting 44 percent from the field compared to the Griffons shooting 7 of 20 from the field.
After Brady Skeens put the Ichabods up five at 36-31 with 19:34 to play, the Griffons used an 18-6 run over the next 8:21 taking a 49-42 lead with 11:13 to play.
With the Griffons leading 58-54 with 5:44 to play after a couple Western free throws, Christian Ulsaker hit a pair of free throws and Javion Blake hit a 3-pointer putting Washburn up 59-58 with 4:46 remaining.
However the Ichabods were outscored 16-7 the rest of the way as the Griffons were 9 of 12 from the free throw line going 3 of 4 from the field and Washburn was 2 of 4 from both the field and the free throw line as the Griffons held on for the eight-point win.
The Griffons finished the game 33 off 44 from the free throw line compared to 15 of 27 from the line for the Ichabods in the game as Washburn was whistled for three more fouls in the contest.
 Washburn was led by Skeens who scored 17 points adding eight rebounds and Blake scored 16 hitting 4 of 8 3-point attempts.
Washburn (14-12, 10-11 MIAA) finished 22 of 48 from the field hitting 7 of 19 3-pointers while the Griffons were 17 of 42 overall and 7 of 23 from deep.
The Griffons (10-17, 8-13 MIAA) turned 18 Ichabod turnovers into 20 points while holding a 31 to 29 advantage on the glass.   

 Last time out for Missouri Western
(Feb. 27, 2016) ST. JOSEPH – The Missouri Western Men's Basketball team saved some of its best for last, coming back in the final minutes to knock off Central Missouri, 63-62, and seal up the 11-seed in the upcoming MIAA Tournament.
 Aaron Emmanuel made two free throws with 1:03 left to give Missouri Western the 63-62 lead and the Griffon defense held up with Emmanuel picking up a steal on Central Missouri's final possession to seal the win. In a game that went back and forth with nine lead changes, Central Missouri looked to have control late in the second half. The Mules led by seven with 10 to go, but an 8-0 Griffon run gave Missouri Western the lead with 6:58 left. UCM recaptured the lead and the game would be tied three times in the final five minutes.
 Miles Wentzien was the only Griffon in double figures, leading the way with 16 points. The freshman was 5-7 from the field and 4-5 from behind the arc. Kevin Thomas scored nine and pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds. Aaron Emmanuel scored eight with six rebounds and nine assists..
