Ichabod men's basketball team continues homestand with Lions

  Opening Tip
•      The Washburn Ichabod men's basketball team looks to get back to its winning ways as they will play host to Missouri Southern on Saturday in Lee Arena.
•     The Ichabods (12-8, 8-7 MIAA) fell last time out 82-71 to Pittsburg State on Wednesday at home in the first of a three-game homestand.
•     The Lions (13-9, 10-6 MIAA) topped Emporia State on the road last time out 102-97 winning their second-straight game.
•     The Lions won the first meeting on Dec. 19 by a score of 92-72 in Joplin.
•     The Lions have won the last three meetings with the Ichabods.
•     The Ichabods lead the all-time series with Missouri Southern 47-29.
•     The Ichabods have played in four overtime games this season going 2-2. Washburn is 33-34 all-time in overtime games. The Ichabod single season record for overtime games is five set during the 1994-95 and 2006-07 seasons.
•     In Washburn's 12 wins this season they are averaging 76.8 ppg while allowing 68.6 ppg … in the eight losses they are averaging 72.6 ppg while allowing 83.8 ppg.

•     Washburn is second in the MIAA in field goal percentage defense holding opponents to 41 percent shooting.
•     The Ichabods are +2.9 in rebound margin this season, which is fifth in the MIAA … the Ichabods lead the MIAA in rebounding at 39.9 per game and second in the league in offensive rebounds at 12.4 per game.

•     Brady Skeens' 47 blocked shots this season is third on the single season chart and his 2.4 blocks per game ranks first on the single season chart ahead of Dan Buie's 1.7 blocks per game (27 games) in 1995-96 … his 59 career blocked shots is ninth on the career chart and his 1.8 career blocks per game average is first … the single season block record is 52 set in the 2004-05 season by Travis Robbins …  Skeens' 47 blocks are a Ichabod sophomore class chart breaking Dan Buie's 45 set in 1995-96 season.
•     Javion Blake's 277 points is eighth on the Ichabod freshman scoring chart … his 34 3-pointers are fourth on the Ichabod freshman chart … he needs four to tie Gary Woodland for third. The freshman record is 54 set by Shannon Kruger during the 1998-99 season.
•     Tyas Martin recorded a career-high seven rebounds against Pittsburg State last time out.
•     Brady Skeens had a career-high 16 points against the Gorillas while setting career-highs with eight field goals made and 13 field goal attempts.
•     Skeens has had four blocks in six games this season and a career-high five against Nebraska-Kearney on Dec. 5, 2015.

 Last Time Out For The Ichabods
Pittsburg State 82, Washburn 71 -- Feb. 3, 2016
 TOPEKA, Kan. – The Washburn Ichabods came up on the short end of the stick as a hot-shooting Pittsburg State team pulled away late in an 82-71 loss on Wednesday night in Lee Arena.
 The Ichabods (13-7, 9-6 MIAA) trailed by as many as 10 in the first half, Washburn cut the Gorillas (12-10, 7-9 MIAA) lead down to four at the break at 38-34. Washburn came out in the second half as Christian Ulsaker scored six straight points for the Ichabods at 38.
 Pitt State would then go on a 14-2 run hitting all four field goal attempts and all five field goal attempts building a 12-point lead at 52-40 with 15:29 to play. The Ichabods used a 15-8 run of their own trimming the lead back to five at 60-55 with 8:19 to play in the game and would eventually cut the margin to three with 5:48 remaining on a 3-pointer by Javion Blake. However from that point on, Pitt State outscored the Ichabods 17-9 the rest of the way hitting all three 3-point attempts and would go 7 of 9 from the field overall leading to the 11-point win picking up their third win in the last 33 games in Lee Arena.
 Brady Skeens led the Ichabods with a career-high with 16 points grabbing 12 rebounds for his seventh double double of the season. Skeens was 8 of 13 from the field and recorded four blocks and two steals. Blake finished with 13 points and Ulsaker had 10 points making his first start of the season going 4 of 6 from the field. Tyas Martin scored nine points adding a career-high seven rebounds.
 Josiah Gustafson led the Gorillas with 27 points hitting 11 of 17 shots and 5 of 8 3-point attempts.
 The Ichabods finished the game 28 of 62 for a 45 percent average while the Gorillas were 31 of 60 overall going 17 of 30 in the second half (57 percent). Washburn had a 38 to 29 advantage on the glass turning 12 offensive rebounds into 15 second chance points. Pitt State turned 15 Ichabod turnovers into 18 points.  
 
 About Missouri Southern
•      Missouri Southern is 13-9 overall and 10-6 in the MIAA. They are 3-5 in MIAA road games this season.
•      Taevaunn Prince is leading the MIAA in scoring and rebounding at 26.6 points and 10.3 rebounds per game … he is averaging 27.7 ppg in MIAA games … he's scored at least 30 points in seven games including a season-high 37 at Northeastern State and scored 31 against Emporia State last time out going 10 of 15 from the field and hitting 11 of 15 free throws.
•      The Lions are shooting 49 percent from the field hitting 611 of 1259 shots and they are 178 of 429 from 3-point range for a 42 percent average.
•      The Lions have also attempted 49 more free throws than their opponents (562 to 513) and have made 80 more (444 to 364).
•      Charlie Brown is scoring 14.1 ppg and Austin Wright is averaging 12.4 ppg and DJ Feitl is scoring 8.7 ppg. The next-highest scoring Lion is Isaac Kreuer at 5.8 ppg.

 Series History with Missouri Southern
•     Saturday's meeting will be 77th between these two schools in a series that dates back to 1968-69.
•     Washburn leads the all-time series 47-29 … the Lions have won the last three meetings. 
•     Washburn is 24-16 in MIAA games against the Lions and 9-13 on the road against MSSU since joining the league in 1989-90.
•     The Ichabods have lost eight in a row on the road to the Lions with their last win coming in Joplin on Jan. 21, 2006 in a 60-56 win.
•     The two teams have met at least once a year since 1976-77.
•     The Ichabods are 3-2 against the Lions in the MIAA Tournament.
•     In games played in Topeka, the Ichabods are 29-9 overall and 22-6 in games played in Lee Arena.
•     The teams have met twice in the NCAA Tournament - on March 10, 2000 when the Lions picked up a 79-73 overtime win in Joplin and on March 12, 2011 when the Lions topped the Ichabods in overtime again 82-79 in Edmond, Okla.
•     The 110-73 win by the Lions over the Ichabods in Joplin on Dec. 7, 2013 was the largest defeat suffered by an Ichabod team since joining the NCAA Division II ranks.  
 
 Last meeting with Missouri Southern
(Dec. 19, 2015) JOPLIN, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabods wrapped up the calendar year with a 92-72 loss at Missouri Southern.
The Ichabods trailed 47-31 at the break after the Lions hit 8 of 21 shots from 3-point range jumping out to a 16-point lead. Javion Blake scored eight in the opening half as 13 of the 14 Ichabods in uniform saw action in the first half. Overall the Ichabods were 12 of 33 while the Lions were 17 of 36.
In the second half, the Ichabods were held to 2 of 13 over the first 10 minutes of the half compared to the Lions going 9 of 16, including 3 of 6 from 3-point range opening a 33-point lead with 9:55 to play in the game.
Washburn used a 21-3 run over a three-minute stretch trimming lead to 78-59 with 5:42 to go in the game as Wiggins scored 11 during the run as Washburn hit 7 of 9 shots from the field.
Washburn cut the lead to 16 with 4:22 to play but would not get any closer.
Wiggins led the Ichabods with 20 points and Randall Smith scored 12 with four assists. Brady Skeens scored 11 adding four rebounds and two blocks while Blake scored 11.
The Lions were led by Taevaunn Prince's 21 points pacing five Lions in double figures.
Washburn (7-3, 3-2 MIAA) finished 25 of 63 from the field and 19 of 28 from the free throw line in the game. The Lions (8-4, 5-1 MIAA) finished 29 of 65 for a 45 percent clip hitting 21 of 28 free throws. The Lions also held a 49 to 33 advantage on the glass turning 15 offensive rebounds into 19 second chance points.   

 Last time out for Missouri Southern
(Feb. 3, 2016) Emporia, Kan. -- Taevaunn Prince had his seventh 30-point game of the season and Austin Wright scored a season-high 26 as the Missouri Southern men's basketball team defeated Emporia State 102-97 in overtime inside White Auditorium.
Southern (13-9, 10-6 MIAA) was led by Prince's 31-point effort. He went 10-15 from the field and 11-15 from the free throw line, adding 14 rebounds and seven assists. The 11 free throws give him 213 this season and he is just 40 from breaking the MIAA single-season record of 252.
Wright scored 26 points on 8-16 from the field and 6-11 from long-range, while both Taylor Luster and DJ Feitl had 11 points each. Luster added five assists. The six three's for Wright give him 243 in his career.
Emporia (9-12, 6-9 MIAA) was led by 25 points from Terrence Moore as four Hornets scored in double-figures.
The Hornets led 11-6 early on after a pair of free throws from Charles McKinney with 15:45 left in the first half. The Lions, however, went on a 8-3 run and led 14-13 with 13:37 to go after a layup from Prince.
A three from Wright with ten minutes left made the score 26-20, Lions, and a jumper from Feitl with 6:49 to go gave Southern a 33-26 lead. Emporia tied it up at 35 with four minutes left and both teams traded baskets with the Lions leading 47-41 at the break.
Emporia opened up a 56-49 lead with 15:03 left in the second half, but the Lions went on a 14-2 run over the next five minutes and a Wright three gave Southern a 63-58 lead with ten to play. ESU led by as many as four with 3:40 to play and the Lions led 85-83 with 23 seconds left, but a layup from the Hornets with just under four seconds forced overtime.
In the overtime period, Southern jumped out to a 93-88 lead with 3:17 to go, and a three from Wright made the score 98-92 with just over a minute. A free throw from Prince provided the final points for MSSU.
The Lions shot 59 percent from the field and 50 percent from long range. Southern hit 71 percent of its free throws.

•      The Ichabods are 1,517-1,044-2 (.592) all-time in the 111th year in the program's history.
•      Washburn is the eighth-winningest program in NCAA Division II history by victories.
•      Washburn is the winningest MIAA program since the 1989-90 season with an overall record of 543-257 since joining the conference and the NCAA.
