GREAT BEND, Kan. -- The Washburn men's junior varsity basketball team picked up its first victory Saturday, defeating Highland Community College 68-65.

JoBreil Powell came off the bench to lead the Ichabods with 18 points, while Tommy Ekart added in 16 of his own to make up half of the Ichabods' scoring.

The Ichabods rode an impressive offensive first half, where they shot 8-20 on 3-pointers and scored 41 points in the period. Both Ekart and Powell reached double figures in the first half, Powell despite playing only eight of those minutes.

The Ichabods maintained the lead by holding the Scotties to 24 percent shooting in the second half, and just 2-13 from the 3-point line. The Ichabods briefly fell behind in the second, but used a quick 10-0 run to go ahead by sevent, which tied for the largest lead of the game.

With 10 seconds left, the Scotties had their final possession of the game, and the 3-pointer to tie the game was missed by Highland's Ryan Haskins.

The Ichabods will take their 1-1 record to Ottawa, Kansas to take on the Ottawa University JV team. The game will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday. For more information on the men's JV season, visit wusports.com.
