EMPORIA, Kan. --- The Washburn women's tennis team came out unscathed after defeating in-state rival Emporia State 6-3 in the latest meeting between the two.
Washburn got out to a shaky start after dropping two of three doubles points. Seventh-ranked duo of
Madeline Hill and
Jacqueline Engelbrecht were defeated at No. 1 doubles in an 8-4 decision.
Logan Morrissey and
Ally Burr notched their second win together at No. 2 doubles in an 8-4 split.
Madison Lysaught and
MaKenna Gonzales were handed a loss at the three spot, 8-4.
Washburn fought its way back and ultimately secured the win after taking five of six courts in singles play. Morrissey got things going after defeating Camila Ramos in straight sets 7-5, 6-4.
Eighth-ranked Hill put another win on her impressive resume after defeating Tawni Griffey in straight sets 7-5, 6-1.
Engelbrecht defeated Hornet netter, Tahlia Walsh, in three 6-2, 5-7, 6-4.
Emporia State netter Kaley Clark outlasted Gonzales in three sets 6-0, 7-5, 6-0 before Burr clinched the match for the Ichabods in a win in straight sets at No. 6 singles over Lori Ahuja 7-6, 6-2.
Lysaught closed out the match on a high note after defeating Amy Fugit at No. 5 singles 6-2, 6-4.
Washburn improves to 10-7 on the season and will host Baker University on April 12 in its final home match of the season.
