Ichabods fall late to Life Prep Academy, 55-52

TOPEKA, Kan. -- Washburn women's JV basketball fell in a back-and-forth home opener against Life Prep Academy, losing 55-52.  

The Ichabpds began the game with a 13-11 lead after the first quarter of play, scoring six points from the free throw line and holding the Fire to just 5-18 shooting from the field. 

In the second quarter Life Prep knocked down two threes on the way to outscoring Washburn 14-10 in the quarter. The Ichabods turned the ball over six times in the 10-minute period to trail 25-23 going into the half.  

Offense for both teams picked up out of the break. Raegan Wells and Bailey Collar combined to score the first seven points of the quarter for Washburn, to take a 32-29 lead. Chloe Carter scored four points in the quarter which ended with the Ichabods trailing by three.  

After falling behind by five points early in the fourth quarter Washburn went on a 9-0 run sparked by two 3-pointers by Tristyn Kremeier to put the Ichabods up by four. Washburn was unable to keep the offense going down the stretch, being held scoreless in the final four minutes while Life Prep scored the final six points to win 55-52.  

Bailey Collar and Chloe Carter led Washburn with 13 points each. Carter played all 40 minutes, also leading the Ichabods with six rebounds and five assists.  

Raegan Wells added 11 points on 5-8 shooting with five rebounds. Tristyn Kremeier scored eight points and came away with a team best three steals.  

Angela Vergara led the Fire with 13 points and five assists. Awa Fane and Sofia Lopez each reached double figures with 12 points.  

Washburn was outrebounded 41-34 in the game, with Life Prep coming away with 15 offensive boards. Each team struggled with turnovers, with 23 from the Fire and 26 for the Ichabods. Washburn ended the game shooting 34.8% from the floor and held Life Prep to just 32.8% on 21-64 shooting.  

The Ichabods will stay at home to take on Kansas City Kansas Community College on Monday, Nov. 7 at 5:30 p.m.
