No. 5 Washburn women facing No. 40 Harding and Cameron in Sooner State swing

TOPEKA, Kan. -- No. 5 Washburn women's tennis remains away from home as they face off against No. 40 Harding and Cameron in a pair of matches in the Sooner State over the next three days beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday against the Bisons. 
 

First Serve

  • No. 5 Washburn women's tennis heads back on the road facing No. 40 Harding in a neutral court battle and Cameron University. 
  • The Ichabods will take on the Bisons at 10 a.m. on Saturday in Edmond, Okla. They will face the Aggies on Monday with first serve also set for 10 a.m. in Lawton. 
  • Last time out the Ichabods improved to 7-1 on the year with a 4-0 sweep of Hawaii Pacific on March 6. 
  • Harding is 5-7 to begin the season while Cameron is 3-3. 

BODS AND BITS 

  • Washburn's 2024-25 roster features five returners from a season ago with four new additions to round out the roster.  
  • The Ichabods continue to climb, moving up to No. 5 in the ITA rankings. 
  • Washburn was picked to finish first in the MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll. 
  • This season the Ichabods are 1-1 inside of Topeka, 5-0 in road matches and 1-0 in neutral court matches. 
  • Washburn is coming off a 20-6 season where they went 6-2 in the MIAA and advanced to the NCAA Round of 16.

AROUND THE RANKINGS

SINGLES SETUP

  • On the year Washburn has gone 88-31 (73.9%) in singles duals overall with a 33-10 record in duals. 
  • Jasel Bailey is tied for the team lead with 12 victories going 12-2 overall and is 4-1 in duals at No. 5 and No. 6. 
  • Daniela Tijaro is tied for the team lead in victories going 12-4 during her freshman season with a 6-2 mark in duals and 3-0 at No. 4. 
  • Leo Floeth is 11-5 in her first season with Washburn, going 4-1 from No. 1. 
  • Renske Ubachs is 10-4 on the year and 7-1 in duals playing at the top two positions. 
  • Saajida Razick is 9-5 on the year, she is 3-3 in duals between No. 3 and No. 4.
  • Isabella Martensson has posted a 8-3 record overall and is 1-1 from No. 6. 
  • After missing the fall Peyton Koper returned in the spring and is 5-0 playing at three different positions. 
  • Maddie shelley has gone 9-1 on the year all coming in the fall.
  • Isabella Pensavalle went 6-2 in the fall with wins in her last three duals. 

DOUBLES DOWNLOAD

  • The Ichabods have gone 52-18 (74.3%) across their doubles matches this season overall and are 17-5 in duals. 
  • Daniela Tijaro and Renske Ubachs are 15-4 together this season with a 6-2 record in duals from No. 1. 
  • In the spring Floeth and Peyton Koper are 5-2 together all coming at No. 2. 
  • Isabella Martensson and Saajida Razick are 8-1 together this season and have gone 4-1 together at No. 3. 
  • Issabella Pensavalle and Jasel Bailey went 7-2 together in doubles action during the fall. 
  • Leo Floeth and Isabella Martensson compiled a 7-4 mark playing together this season. 
  • Daniela Tijaro has the most doubles victories of any individual going 17-5 so far. 
  • Ubachs and Martensson are both second on the team with 14 victories. 

Last Time Out

Washburn 4, Hawaii Pacific 0 (March 6, 2025) 

AZUSA, Cali. -- No. 8 Washburn completed a sweep of its west coast trip with a sweep as they defeated Hawaii Pacific 4-0 on Thursday afternoon. The Ichabods will return to action next Saturday, March 15 against Harding in Edmond, Okla.  

Renske Ubachs and Daniela Tijaro began doubles competition with a 6-2 win on the top court for Washburn (7-1). The Sharks (2-7) evened things up as Leo Floeth and Peyton Koper fell 6-4 from No. 2. Saajida Razick and Isabella Martensson finished shortly after, earning the Ichabods a point, winning 6-4 at No. 3.  

In singles play Ubachs once again worked quickly, winning 6-3 in the first set and 6-0 in the second at No. 1. Daniela Tijaro followed, winning 6-4 and 6-2 sets to bring up match point. Leo Floeth provided the match-clinching point with a pair of 6-2 set victories to wrap up the sweep from court two.  

Saajida Razick led 3-2 in the second set at No. 3 after winning 6-3 in the first set when the match was decided. Peyton Koper was just three games into her duel from No. 5.  

Head Coach Kirby Ronning

  • Ronning is in year five as the head coach of the men's and women's tennis teams at Washburn  
  • Has led both teams to the NCAA Tournament in every season at the helm with a 151-55 combined record with Washburn.
  • Has been named the ITA Central Region Coach of the Year three times. He earned the award on both the men's and women's side in the 2022-23 season and repeated as the men's winner after 2023-24.
  • Prior to joining the Ichabods Ronning spent four seasons as the assistant coach at Azusa Pacific from 2016-2022
  • As a player, he played for four years at Bethel University (Minn.). Ronning received his bachelor's degree in Business from Bethel in 2014 and earned his master's degree in Physical Education at Azusa Pacific in May 2020.

The Assistants

  • Graduate assistants Maja Jung and Santiago Rendon begin their first season on the Ichabod coaching staff while Kurt Reid enters his sixth season with both programs as a volunteer assistant.
  • Reid started his collegiate tennis career at Tulsa (1977-78) before transferring to Washburn for the 1978-79 season.
  • A Topeka-native, Reid played tennis at Topeka West High School and was elected to the Topeka West Sports Hall of Fame in 2015. 
  • Maja Jung joins the coaching staff after finishing her four-year playing career at Washburn with the second most total victories of any player in women's program history. 
  • Santiago Rendon also moves from playing to the sidelines after wrapping up three seasons with the Ichabods headlined by an ITA Cup Doubles National Championship in fall of 2023. 
  • Former Ichabod All-American Logan Morrissey joins the staff during the spring season as a volunteer assistant on the women's side. 
  • After finishing her career she spent the 2021-22 season as a graduate assistant with the team.

ABOUT THE HARDING BISONS

  • Harding is 5-7 on the year after winning 5-2 over Delta State last time out on March 7 in Searcy, Ar. 
  • Last season the Bisons went 14-9 overall and 2-3 inside the GAC, they fell in the semifinal round of the GAC Tournament. 
  • In singles play Harding is 60-51 (54.1%) this season while going 28-36 in duals. 
  • In the ITA Rankings, Alexia Zarate Valdez is ranked No. 14 nationally while Karli Roux is tabbed at No. 29. 
  • Alexia Zarate Valdez leads the team with a 14-7 singles record. She is 6-4 in duals, all at No. 1. 
  • Karli Roux is 12-4 on the year with a 8-2 record playing at No. 2. 
  • In doubles competition the Bisons are 22-27 (44.9%) overall with a 15-20 mark in duals. 
  • Karli Roux and Alexia Zarate Valdez are ranked No. 41 together. They are 7-9 together this season with a 4-7 record at No. 1. 

HEAD COACH DAVID REDDING

  • Is in his 10th season as the head coach at Harding for the men's and women's tennis programs. 
  • Redding returned to Harding from Dallas, where he was the director of tennis at the Northwood Club beginning in 1989. 
  • Redding was a member of the Harding tennis team from 1979-83. He earned multiple all-district and all-conference honors, was two-time NAIA All-Academic, and earned the 1983 NAIA Arthur Ashe Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship. Redding was inducted into the Harding Athletics Hall of Fame in 1990.

HISTORY WITH HARDING

  • Washburn and Harding are tied 1-1 in the all-time series. 
  • The first meeting came on March 15, 2019 and was a 5-2 win for the Ichabods in Topeka. 
  • Last time the two teams met was on April 3, 2022 with a 4-3 win for the Bisons in Bolivar, Mo. 

ABOUT THE CAMERON AGGIES

  • Cameron is 3-3 on the year after defeating Southwest Baptist 4-0 on Wednesday at home. They have won the last three times out. 
  • Last season the Aggies went 14-8 overall last year while going 9-2 inside the LSC. They won the Lone Star Conference Championship before falling in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. 
  • In singles play Cameron is 13-18 (41.9%) on the year. 
  • Jenna Goessel is 3-1 on the year, all coming from No. 3. 
  • Magda Wawrowska has a team-high four victories going 4-2 on the year at No. 3 and No. 4. 
  • In doubles competition the Aggies are 7-10 (41.2%) on the year. 
  • Jenna Goessel and Anastasia Uspenskaia are ranked No. 2 in the nation in doubles. The pair are 3-1 together this season at No. 2. 

HEAD COACH JOSH COBBLE

  • Is in his eighth season as the head men's and women's tennis coach at Cameron. 
  • Spent seven years as the head coach at Cowley College where he led the Tigers men's and women's tennis teams to region titles in 2011 and 2012
  • Cobble spent two seasons playing for the Tigers, where he advanced to the finals of the national tournament as a freshman, and reached the semifinals in doubles as a sophomore. He then went on to play for James Helvey at Cameron for two seasons.

HISTORY WITH CAMERON

  • Cameron leads the all-time series with Washburn 10-4. 
  • The Ichabods are 1-3 against the Aggies in Lawton, Okla. 
  • The series began on March 24, 1995 with a 7-0 win for Cameron in Topeka. 
  • Last season when the two teams met Washburn won 4-3 in Wichita Falls, Tex. on March 8.

SCHEDULE SPRING FORWARD

  • MIAA play is next up for Washburn as they host Newman on Thursday, March 27 at the Washburn Tennis Complex. 
  • The regular season concludes with senior day for Washburn hosting Arkansas-Fort Smith on April 26 at 1 p.m.
  • The MIAA Tournament will be held in Springfield, Mo. from May 2-4.
