No. 7 Ichabods head to St. Joseph on Wednesday to face Griffons

TOPEKA, Kan. -- No. 7 Washburn women's tennis heads on the road to face Missouri Western State in St. Joseph with first serve set for 2 p.m. on Wednesday. 
 

First Serve

  • No. 7 Washburn begins a week on the road facing Missouri Western. 
  • The Ichabods will face the Griffons on Wednesday, April 16 at 2 p.m. in St. Joseph, Mo. 
  • Last time out the Ichabods improved to 13-1 on the year and 4-0 in the MIAA after defeating Emporia State 5-2 at home. 
  • Missouri Western fell to 4-9 overall and 1-5 in the MIAA after losing 5-2 to Central Oklahoma last time out.

  • Washburn's 2024-25 roster features five returners from a season ago with four new additions to round out the roster.  
  • The Ichabods moved up to No. 7 in the lates ITA computerized rankings.
  • Washburn was picked to finish first in the MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll.

SINGLES SETUP

  • On the year Washburn has gone 111-44 (71.6%) in singles duals overall with a 56-23 record in duals. 
  • Jasel Bailey is tied for the team lead with 18 victories going 18-2 overall and is 10-1 in duals from No. 4 to No. 6. She has won her last seven matches. 
  • Renske Ubachs is 15-5 on the year and 12-2 in duals playing at the top two positions. She is 8-1 at No. 1 and 2-2 against ranked opponents. 
  • Daniela Tijaro is 14-7 during her freshman season. She is 8-5 in duals and 5-1 playing at No. 3. 
  • Leo Floeth is 12-10 in her first season with Washburn, going 4-1 from No. 1 and 6-7 in duals. 
  • Peyton Koper has a 8-2 record on the year, all coming in duals between No. 4 and No. 6.

Washburn 5, Emporia State 2 (April 10, 2025) 

TOPEKA, Kan. -- No. 7 Washburn extended its winning streak in a near four-hour match with Emporia State on Thursday afternoon that ended 5-2 for the home squad. The Ichabods will hit the road next to take on Southeastern Oklahoma State on Sunday, April 13 at 10 a.m.  

Washburn (13-1, 4-0 MIAA) led off doubles play with Peyton Koper and Leo Floeth working a 6-1 win on the top court for the first time this season. The Hornets (7-8, 2-3 MIAA) evened the point up as Isabella Martensson and Saajida Razick fell 6-4 on court two. Playing together for the first time this season, Renske Ubachs and Maddie Shelley overcame a late deficit to win a tiebreaker 7-6(5) at No. 3 and take the first point of the match.  

Jasel Bailey began singles play by blazing through her match, dropping on two games in a pair of 6-1 victories at No. 5 and taking less than 45 minutes. Nearly an hour later Emporia State got on the board at No. 4 as Peyton Koper fell 6-3, 6-2 in each of the final two sets after taking the first 6-0. Saajida Razick pulled away late in both sets at No. 3, setting up match point with 6-3 and 6-4 victories.  

Renske Ubachs cruised to a 6-1 win in her opening set on the top court. Set two went in favor of the Hornets, 6-4, but she was able to bounce back, winning 6-2 in the third to provide the clinching point. Maddie Shelley added another to Washburn's total moments after, winning her third set at No. 6, 6-2 after splitting the first two 6-4 and 3-6. In her first set from No. 2, Leo Floeth grinded out a 6-4 win. The score was flipped in the second and after building an early lead, she fell 7-6(5) in a tiebreaker to end the match.  

Head Coach Kirby Ronning

  • Ronning is in year five as the head coach of the men's and women's tennis teams at Washburn  
  • Has led both teams to the NCAA Tournament in every season at the helm with a 162-56 combined record with Washburn.
  • Has been named the ITA Central Region Coach of the Year three times. He earned the award on both the men's and women's side in the 2022-23 season and repeated as the men's winner after 2023-24.
  • Prior to joining the Ichabods Ronning spent four seasons as the assistant coach at Azusa Pacific from 2016-2022
  • As a player, he played for four years at Bethel University (Minn.). Ronning received his bachelor's degree in Business from Bethel in 2014 and earned his master's degree in Physical Education at Azusa Pacific in May 2020.

The Assistants

  • Graduate assistants Maja Jung and Santiago Rendon begin their first season on the Ichabod coaching staff while Kurt Reid enters his sixth season with both programs as a volunteer assistant.
  • Reid started his collegiate tennis career at Tulsa (1977-78) before transferring to Washburn for the 1978-79 season.
  • A Topeka-native, Reid played tennis at Topeka West High School and was elected to the Topeka West Sports Hall of Fame in 2015. 
  • Maja Jung joins the coaching staff after finishing her four-year playing career at Washburn with the second most total victories of any player in women's program history. 
  • Santiago Rendon also moves from playing to the sidelines after wrapping up three seasons with the Ichabods headlined by an ITA Cup Doubles National Championship in fall of 2023. 
  • Former Ichabod All-American Logan Morrissey joins the staff during the spring season as a volunteer assistant on the women's side. 
  • After finishing her career she spent the 2021-22 season as a graduate assistant with the team.

ABOUT THE MISSOURI WESTERN GRIFFONS

  • Missouri Western is 4-9 on the year with a 1-5 record in the MIAA after falling 5-2 to Central Oklahoma on the road on April 12. 
  • Last season the Griffons went 18-4 with a 6-2 mark in MIAA play, winning the MIAA Championship Tournament and advancing to the NCAA Central Region Championship.

HEAD COACH ALEJANDRO DE LA TORRE

  • Alejandro de la Torre is in his fourth season as the head women's tennis coach at Missouri Western. 
  • Comes to the Griffons afrer two seasons at NCAA Division II St. Mary's University in Texas where he served as a graduate assistant in 2020 before being elevated to an assistant coach.
  • In his first season MWSU reached its first ever MIAA Championship match, last year he helped MWSU reach the Sweet 16.

HISTORY WITH MISSOURI WESTERN

  • Washburn leads the all-time series with Missouri Western 34-3. 
  • The Ichabods are 17-1 against the Griffons on the road. 
  • The series began on April 15, 1991 with a 9-0 win for Washburn in Topeka. 
  • Washburn has won the last four meetings including two wins last season, 4-3 on the road and 4-1 at home.
