No. 14 Washburn women's tennis begins MIAA Tournament in semifinals with No. 43 Bearcats

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- No. 14 Washburn women's tennis will begin its run in the MIAA Tournament facing No. 43 Northwest Missouri State in the semifinal round at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 3 at the Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield, Mo. 
 

First Serve

  • No. 14 Washburn women's tennis enters the MIAA Tournament in the semifinal round taking on No. 43 Northwest Missouri. 
  • The No. 2 seeded Ichabods face the No. 3 seed Bearcats at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 3 in Springfield, Mo. from the Cooper Tennis Complex. 
  • Last time out the Ichabods improved to 17-2 overall and finished 8-1 in the MIAA after defeating Arkansas-Fort Smith 7-0 in the regular season finale. 
  • Northwest Missouri improved to 14-7 and won an eighth match in a row defeating Northeastern State 4-0 in the quarterfinals on Friday. 

TOURNAMENT TIME

  • Washburn heads to the MIAA Tournament in Springfield, Mo. looking for a second MIAA Tournament Championship in the last three seasons.
  • The No. 2 seed Ichabods get a quarterfinal round bye along with No. 1 Nebraska Kearney. 
  • On the other side of the bracket No. 4 Central Oklahoma is facing the No. 1 Lopers also at 10 a.m. 

ALL-MIAA HONORS

  • Earlier in the week All-Conference honors were announced with five Ichabods being represented along with head coach Kirby Ronning being named the MIAA Coach of the Year. 
  • Renske Ubachs was a first team selection in singles for the first time in her career. 
  • She earned a sweep of first team honors as she and Daniela Tijaro were also on the first team for doubles. 
  • Leo Floeth was an All-MIAA second team selection in singles during her first season at Washburn. 
  • Saajida Razick and Daniela Tijaro each earned honorable mention nods in singles during their freshmen seasons. 
  • Peyton Koper and Leo Floeth were tabbed as honorable mentions in doubles. 

BODS AND BITS 

  • Washburn's 2024-25 roster features five returners from a season ago with four new additions to round out the roster.  
  • The Ichabods moved to No. 14 in the lates ITA computerized rankings.
  • Washburn was picked to finish first in the MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll.
  • The Ichabods are ranked No. 1 in the latest NCAA Central Region rankings released on April 30.  
  • This season the Ichabods are 6-1 inside of Topeka, 9-1 in road matches and 2-0 in neutral court matches. 
  • Washburn is coming off a 20-6 season where they went 6-2 in the MIAA and advanced to the NCAA Round of 16.
  • The Ichabods are 4-2 against ITA ranked opponents this season.

AROUND THE RANKINGS

SINGLES SETUP

  • On the year Washburn has gone 133-52 (71.9%) in singles duals overall with a 78-31 record in duals. 
  • Jasel Bailey leads the team with 22 victories going 22-3 overall and is 14-2 in duals from No. 4 to No. 6. She has won her last three matches. 
  • Renske Ubachs is 18-7 on the year and 15-4 in duals playing at the top two positions. She is 11-3 at No. 1 and 4-4 against ranked opponents. 
  • Daniela Tijaro is 17-9 during her freshman season. She is 1-7 in duals and 5-1 playing at No. 3. 
  • Leo Floeth is 16-11 in her first season with Washburn, going 4-1 from No. 3 and 10-8 in duals overall. 
  • Peyton Koper has a 8-4 record on the year, all coming in duals between No. 4 and No. 6. 
  • Saajida Razick is 16-7 on the year, she is 10-5 in duals between No. 3 and No. 5 with a 5-2 mark at No. 4. 
  • Maddie Shelley has gone 14-1 on the year with a 5-0 record in duals and a 3-0 mark at No. 6. 
  • Isabella Martensson has posted a 8-3 record overall and is 1-1 from No. 6. 
  • Isabella Pensavalle has posted a 8-2 record on the year going 1-0 in duals.

Last Time Out

Washburn 7, Arkansas-Fort Smith 2 (April 26, 2025) 

TOPEKA, Kan. -- No. 13 Washburn finished the regular season with a 7-0 senior day sweep over Arkansas-Fort Smith to clinch a share of the programs sixth MIAA Regular Season Championship. The Ichabods will head into the MIAA tournament as a top-two seed and will be in action on Saturday, May 3 after a first round bye.  

Doubles play began on the top court with Danila Tijaro and Renske Ubachs moving quickly to win 6-1. Leo Floeth and Maddie Shelley followed just behind, winning 6-1 themselves from No. 2 to clinch the doubles point for the Ichabods (17-2, 8-1 MIAA). Isabella Martensson and Issabella Pensavalle made it a sweep over the Lions (2-19, 0-9 MIAA) in doubles, winning 6-4 from No. 3.  

Renske Ubachs led off singles action on the top court winning 6-2 in her first set and cruising to a 6-1 win in the second. Leo Fleoth brought up match point, winning 6-2 in the first set and working a 6-4 win in the second from No. 3. Daniela Tijaro provided the clinching point, breezing to a 6-1 victory in her first set at No. 2 before winning 6-4 in the second.  

Issabella Pensavalle was set to play at No. 6, and got credit with the win after her opponent was forced to retire before the duel began. Jasel Bailey swept her first set 6-0 and followed with a 6-3 win to add another point from No. 4. Maddie Shelley followed with 6-2 and 6-3 set victories at No. 5 to wrap up the match and regular season.  

Head Coach Kirby Ronning

  • Ronning is in year five as the head coach of the men's and women's tennis teams at Washburn  
  • Has led both teams to the NCAA Tournament in every season at the helm with a 172-57 combined record with Washburn.
  • Has been named the ITA Central Region Coach of the Year three times. He earned the award on both the men's and women's side in the 2022-23 season and repeated as the men's winner after 2023-24.
  • Prior to joining the Ichabods Ronning spent four seasons as the assistant coach at Azusa Pacific from 2016-2022
  • As a player, he played for four years at Bethel University (Minn.). Ronning received his bachelor's degree in Business from Bethel in 2014 and earned his master's degree in Physical Education at Azusa Pacific in May 2020.

The Assistants

  • Graduate assistants Maja Jung and Santiago Rendon begin their first season on the Ichabod coaching staff while Kurt Reid enters his sixth season with both programs as a volunteer assistant.
  • Reid started his collegiate tennis career at Tulsa (1977-78) before transferring to Washburn for the 1978-79 season.
  • A Topeka-native, Reid played tennis at Topeka West High School and was elected to the Topeka West Sports Hall of Fame in 2015. 
  • Maja Jung joins the coaching staff after finishing her four-year playing career at Washburn with the second most total victories of any player in women's program history. 
  • Santiago Rendon also moves from playing to the sidelines after wrapping up three seasons with the Ichabods headlined by an ITA Cup Doubles National Championship in fall of 2023. 
  • Former Ichabod All-American Logan Morrissey joins the staff during the spring season as a volunteer assistant on the women's side. 
  • After finishing her career she spent the 2021-22 season as a graduate assistant with the team.

ABOUT THE NORTHWEST MISSOURI STATE BEARCATS

  • Northwest Missouri State improved to 14-7 on the year and won an eighth straight match with a 4-0 sweep over Northeastern State in the quarterfinal round on Friday. 
  • They are ranked No. 43 in the latest ITA national rankings. 
  • Last season the Bearcats went 22-5 overall, losing in the first round of the MIAA Tournament and advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. 
  • This season they are 5-2 when playing in Maryville, 7-5 on the road and 2-0 in neutral court matches. 
  • In the ITA singles rankings Marielena Muench is ranked No. 33 while Alva Norberg is slotted at No. 59. 
  • On the year Northwest Missouri is 81-55 (59.6%) on the year in singles while going 70-50 in duals. 
  • Alva orberg leads the team with a 18-6 record in singles, going 9-2 at No. 2. 
  • Marielena Muench holds a 13-10 record overall and has gone 10-9 at No. 1. 
  • In doubles competition, the Bearcats are 41-22 (65.1%) while going 38-22 in duals. 
  • Camilla Franzin and Marielena Muench are 11-9 together this season at No. 1. 
  • Miru Nonaka and Alva Norberg are 11-1 together this season all at No. 2. 

HEAD COACH MARK ROSEWELL

  • Mark Rosewell is in his 41st season as the head coach at Northwest Missouri State for the men's and women's tennis programs. 
  • Has 1,239 victories at Northwest, most of any coach at Northwest, and 29 MIAA Regular Season Championships and 10 MIAA Tournament Championships with 41 NCAA Tournament Appeareances.
  • Roswell served as head tennis coach for both the Mules and Jennies of Central Missouri while working on his master's degree. He was 22-27 at UCM as head coach in two seasons

HISTORY WITH NORTHWEST MISSOURI

  • Northwest Missouri leads the all-time series with Washburn 27-20.
  • The Ichabods are 5-7 against the Bearcats in neutral court matches. 
  • The series began on April 23, 1991 with a 5-4 win for Washburn on the road. 
  • Washburn has lost the last three meetings including a 4-3 match in Maryville on April 19.

  • Renske Ubachs is one doubles victory away from reaching 50 in her career. In singles she is two away from 40. 
  • Maddie Shelley is four doubles wins away from 40 career victories in doubles.

SCHEDULE SPRING FORWARD

  • With a win Washburn will face the winner of the other semifinal match between Nebraska Kearney and Central Oklahoma at 10 a.m. on Sunday. 
  • The NCAA Central Region Championships will be held between May 9-11. Selections are announced on Monday, May 5 at 8:30 p.m. EST.
