PITTSBURG, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabod women's track and field team is in fifth place after the opening day of the MIAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships after recording 11 points. The three-day event continues tomorrow from Pittsburg.
The heptathlon opened with four events, and
Naiuri Krein emerged as the early leader. Krein tallied 3,137 points through the first day and sits in first place overall. Krein finished second in the 100m hurdles (14.80), second in the high jump (1.60m), won the shot put (12.95m), and placed third in the 200 meters (25.87) as she looks to repeat her heptathlon championship from last year.
In the 100m prelims,
Maya Pattison secured a spot in the finals with an eighth-place finish, running a time 11.94.
Kamdyn Wedel (12.03),
Layla Lerus (12.08), and
Lyric Reid (12.21) finishing 10th, 11th and 13th respectively.
The 400m prelims saw
Kereser Augustin post a time of 55.73 to finish fifth overall and advance to the finals, while
Isabella Garcia finished ninth in 57.51 also qualifying for the Sunday finals.
Kennedi Knowles rounded out the event with a personal-best effort of 58.84 placing 12th.
Kyla Lochtefeld delivered one of the day's most notable performances in the 10,000 meters finishing fourth overall in a time of 35:42.05, topping her previous school record and earning an NCAA provisional qualifying mark scoring six team points for the Ichabods.
In the hurdles,
Ashley Heavner advanced to the finals of the 400m hurdles after placing fourth in the prelims with a time of 1:04.50.
The jumping events produced valuable team points and postseason recognition.
Mellanie Neudinger earned All-MIAA honors in the long jump after finishing third with a personal-best mark of 6.03m (19-10.50). The mark was also an NCAA provisional leap adding six points to the team total.
Kyra Ray placed ninth with a personal-best jump of 5.64m (18-06.00), while
Kaylee Hagerman finished 11th at 5.57m (18-03.25).
Throwers also saw action in the hammer throw, where
Adriel Holloway placed 13th with a throw of 49.41 meters.
Jadyn Falley followed closely, finishing 18th with a mark of 47.74 meters (156-08).
