Ichabods shut out in opener at Central Missouri then drop nightcap in 14 innings

WARRENSBURG, Mo. - The Icahbods left seven runners on base in five extra innings played Thursday and then gave up the winning run in the bottom of the 14th inning as they lost 4-3 to No. 20 Central Missouri to cap a doubleheader sweep by the Mules. The Ichabods were shut out 4-0 in the opener as UCM starter Jared Potts pitched a two-hitter with 12 strikeouts.

The two teams will play another doubleheader Friday at 3 p.m. to complete the four-game series.

Danny Cook started the second game and allowed the first two runs off five hits and four walks with three strikeouts. He pitched the first 5 2/3 innings before Curtis Hamilton came in and went 7 and 2/3. While he was on the mound the Ichabods tied the score in the seventh inning and then again in the ninth.

In the top of the seventh Dan Egan singled in Cameron Kasel to make the score 2-2. The Mules went ahead in the eighth inning on an RBI single and then Wes Joy led off the ninth with a single and scored on Brett Sorensen's RBI grounder.

The two teams each went scoreless until there was one out in the bottom of the 14th inning and the winning UCM run scored on a wild pitch.

The Ichabods left two runners on base in the 11th and 13th inning and then left the bases loaded in the 14th.

Wes Joy was 4 for 6 in the game with an RBI and run scored and Calvin Iversen was 3 for 6. Hamilton earned the loss to go to 1-1.

In the first game Zach Engelken gave up four runs on six hits with two walks and four strikeouts. He got no offensive help as the Ichabods were kept to a pair of hits, one each to Joe Hosey and Tyler Blankenship. Engelken fell to 0-2.
