KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Ichabods avoided another extra inning game as they picked up a non-conference win on the road with a 3-2 victory at Rockhurst Tuesday night. Washburn improved to 6-9 and will prepare for a four-game MIAA series with Missouri Southern Starting Friday at 5 p.m. at Falley Field.

Wes Joy drove in a pair of runs on a single in the fifth inning and then Brian Gorges scored what ended up being the game-winning run in the eighth inning to snap a four-game losing streak overall and a five-game losing streak against Rockhurst. It was the Ichabods' first win at RU since 1994.

The Hawks had a chance to tie the score in the ninth with runners at second and third. After a sacrifice fly drove in the runner at third to make the score 3-2, third baseman Joe Hosey threw out the other runner as he tried to score from second after the relay from right field got away from Hosey.

Zach Engelken started for Washburn and earned the win with five innings of three-hit baseball. He allowed one run with a strikeout. Danny Cook and Curtis Hamilton pitched the final four innings without allowing a hit and Hamilton earned his second save.

Gorges led off the eighth with a triple and then scored on a sacrifice fly from Mark Stoltz.
