Stroth earns win in game two as Ichabods split again

The Ichabods couldn't overcome a five-run first inning in game one but they were able to come back for a win in game two as they split a doubleheader with Missouri Southern Saturday afternoon at Falley Field. The Lions took game one 7-3 and then Washburn got the second game 6-3 as the two teams each won twice in the four-game series.

Washburn (8-11, 5-7 MIAA) will continue its home stand with a doubleheader against Fort Hays State at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Falley Field.


Game 1

The first six Lions reached base safely as they opened up the game with a five-run first inning and went on to a 7-3 win in the first game.

Half of the 10 hits WU starter Zach Engelken gave up came against the first six batters in the game as they got two doubles and three singles with a walk to drive in five runs. Engelken settled down and didn't allow another run until the fifth, but the Ichabods bats scored just three times as he fell to 1-3 on the year.

Washburn scored a run in the second on an RBI single from Calvin Iversen and then the Ichabods scored twice in the third inning on a sacrifice fly from Mark Stoltz and then an RBI single from Luis Beltran Lopez.


Game 2
Box Score

The Ichabods fell behind in the first inning but scored three runs in the second inning and held off the Lions for a 6-3 win in the nightcap.

Bryan Stroth (2-2) earned the win as he allowed two runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and a walk. Curtis Hamilton retired the side in the ninth inning to earn his third save.

Iverson had a two-run single in the bottom of the second and then Wes Joy followed with an RBI single to give WU a 3-1 lead.

Each team scored a run in the third and then after MSSU got within one run in the seventh inning, the Ichabods scored twice in the eighth to make the score 6-3.

Brett Sorensen doubled down the right field line to drive in a run and then Garrick Gehrt, playing in his first game at WU, drove in a run on a groundout.

Joy and Joe Hosey were each 2 for 4 in the game with an RBI.


Notes
• Kasel was 4 for 6 in the games with two runs scored and Iversen had three RBI.
• Kasel batted .643 (9 for 14) in the four-game series and raised his season batting average to .418 through 19 games.
• Hosey was 8 for 14 in the series with five RBI and Iversen had seven RBI.
