Last time out for the Ichabods
April 11, 2010 - WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabods salvaged a split in the final doubleheader of their four-game series with No. 2 ranked Central Missouri. Washburn jumped out to a big lead in game one and captured a 12-6 win before falling 8-4 in the nightcap. The Ichabods will be back in action on Tuesday at Fort Hays State at 2 p.m.
In the opener, Washburn (13-14, 12-12 MIAA) broke open a scoreless game with four runs in the top of the third inning.
Brian Gomez doubled to lead off the inning. He later scored on a bases-loaded double from
Thomas Holiday, who later scored on a double by
Andy Petz. The Mules (30-4, 23-3 MIAA) tallied a single run in the bottom of the inning to make it 4-1.
The Ichabods added four more runs in the fifth inning for an 8-1 lead.
Travis Cruz drove in
Wes Joy with a single to start the scoring. Holiday added an RBI single and Petz recorded a sacrifice fly to make it 7-1 and
Dane Simoneau had a run-scoring single for the 8-1 advantage. Four runs in the top of the seventh made it 12-1 Washburn. Petz started things off with a two-run double scoring
Brian Clark and Holiday. Then
David Wade smacked a two-run home run to give WU the 11-run lead. The Mules scored five runs thanks in part to two Ichabod errors in the bottom of the seventh, but Washburn was able to close the game out for the 12-6 win.
Brett Ash (3-2) allowed six runs, four earned, on seven hits in 6.1 innings to earn the win for Washburn.
Alex Coons came on in relief to record the final two outs of the game. Ryan Allen (5-1) took the loss for the Mules. He gave up seven runs on eight hits in four innings.
Central Missouri jumped on top 2-0 in game two with a pair of first inning runs. Washburn tallied one in the second when Simoneau singled home
Cameron Kasel. UCM took a 3-1 lead with a single run in the fifth, but the Ichabods responded with three runs in the top of the sixth to claim a 4-3 lead. Simoneau had an RBI single and Gomez drove in a pair with a double to right center.
The Mules regained the lead for good, however, with five runs in the seventh inning for the 8-4 win.
Daren Parker (1-2) took the loss for Washburn after allowing six runs, three earned, on eight hits in 6.1 innings. Alex Kent (6-0) earned the win in relief for UCM after giving up three runs on four hits in three innings of work.
