Kickoff
The Washburn Ichabods return home for their third Thursday night game of the season as they will play host to Missouri Western (2-1, 1-1 MIAA) on the CBS Sports Network NCAA Division II National game of the week. The broadcast will be available to more than 95 million United States households. Washburn (3-0, 2-0 MIAA) is coming off a 30-14 win at Missouri Southern while the Griffons topped Langston 47-0.
Game story lines
• The last four games between the Griffons and the Ichabods have been decided by four points and over the last ten games, the average winning margin has been 8.5 points. The last two games have had a winning margin of three points in each game.
• Missouri Western won 36-33 in Topeka in a game which had an 82-minute lightning delay. Washburn rallied from a 28-7 deficit to take a 33-28 lead only to see the Griffons score a touchdown with 1:54 left for the 36-33 win.
• The Griffons have won the last two games with the Ichabods winning the three games prior to the 2009 meeting.
• Thursday's game is the first time the Ichabods and the Griffons have met on television.
• The Ichabods are looking for their first 4-0 start since the 1986 season. Three times under head coach

Washburn head football coach
Craig Schurig was named head coach of the Ichabod football program Dec. 28, 2001. Schurig is 65-41 (.602) in his tenth season as the Ichabod head coach and he is 50-32 (.600) against the MIAA. He has led the Ichabods to two NCAA Playoff appearances and two bowl appearance championships as well as the 2005 MIAA regular season outright championship as well as recording seven straight winning seasons for the first time in the program's history. Schurig's 65 wins is the second-most in school history behind Dick Godlove (1946-58) who recorded 67 wins.
Missouri Western head football coach Jerry Partridge is in his 15th season as the Griffons head coach. Partridge is 105-60 (.634) and 78-47 (.624) against MIAA opponents as the Griffons head coach and third all-time in the MIAA in victories. He led the Griffons to their first MIAA title and to two DII Playoff appearance in 2006 and 2010. He shared MIAA Coach of the Year honors in 2000 after leading the Griffons to an 8-1 MIAA record. Overall coach Partridge has guided Western to eight postseason appearances with six being in the Mineral Water Bowl.

Fear the Beard
Ichabod sophomore DeJuan Beard finished the 2010 season second in the MIAA punt returns with an 11.8 yard per return average … he also finished second on the team in 2010 with 374 receiving yards and 26 receptions adding four touchdowns. Last time out against Missouri Southern, Beard had career-highs in receiving yards (141), receptions (9), touchdown receptions (2). This season he had 14 catches for 231 yards and three touchdowns. As a freshman in 2010 he had 374 receiving yards and 26 catches.
Garnering Attention
Ichabod sophomore wide receiver
Ronnell Garner tied for the team lead with 30 receiving yards playing a limited evening including a 20 yard touchdown reception. He is second on the team with 11 receptions and 174 receiving yards averaging 15.8 yards per catch. He is averaging a team-best 22.7 yards per kickoff return.
Ichabods in Non-conference Action
Since joining the NCAA ranks, the Ichabods are 22-17 in non-MIAA games. Under head coach
Craig Schurig, the Ichabods are 14-6 in non-conference games since the 2002 season during the regular season following the loss to Abilene Christian in their 2010 home opener. In non-conference regular season away games under Schurig, the Ichabods are 8-2 and in home games during the regular season against non-MIAA foes, the Ichabods are 6-4.
Red Zone Success
In the 2009 and 2010 seasons the Ichabods have been outstanding in the red zone converting on a combined 101 of 113 trips into the red zone scoring 74 touchdowns with 27 field goals. This season the Ichabods have jumped out to another great start scoring on 11 of 13 trips into the red zone with 10 touchdowns and one field goal.

Marty Pfannenstiel has played in 39 career games at Washburn and has started the last 24 games. He has 168 total career tackles after tying for the team lead with 91 tackles as a junior in 2010. He recorded his team-high third interception against Lincoln after picking off two passes against Sioux Falls in the season opener.

He recorded his second rushing touchdown of his career against Lincoln two weeks ago.

Sean McPherson (pronounced Mc-Fear-son) had a 15-carry, 85-yard performance in his first game in a Washburn uniform averaging 5.7 yards per carry to lead the team on the ground against Sioux Falls in the season opener. Against Lincoln, McPherson averaged a whopping 18.3 yards per carry with 110 yards on six attempts and three touchdown runs. In three career games, McPherson has averaged 7.8 yards per carry collecting 241 yards on 31 attempts with three touchdowns.

When the Griffons have the ball, their five offensive linemen average 6-foot-3 and 297 pounds while the Ichabods four defensive linemen average 6-foot-2 and 273 pounds.
Contemplating Conversions
For the Ichabods this season, it has been a tale of two halves as far as third down conversions go. In the first half this season, Washburn has converted 68 percent of its 15 of 22 third down plays. While in the second half of games this season in the first two game, Washburn was only 1 of 13 on third down conversions moving the chains. Against the Lions the Ichabods were 7 of 10 including an 6 of 6 fourth quarter third down conversions to make the Ichabods 8 of 23 overall on third down conversions this season. Opponents are only 7 of 22 in first half conversions while they are completing 11 of 25 third down conversions in the second half. The Ichabods held the Lions to 1 of 6 on third down conversions in the second half last week.
About Missouri Western
The Griffons were 8-4 last season tying for third in the MIAA with a 6-3 record while reaching the NCAA playoffs. They return 43 letterwinners and 17 starters off the 2010 team. This season the Griffons are 2-1 and 1-1 in the MIAA. Missouri Western blanked Langston 47-0 last time out on Sept. 17. The Griffons are averaging 25.7 points per game and only have allowed six points in the last two games shutting down Central Missouri 23-6 on Sept. 7. The Griffons were topped in their season opener with Pittsburg State 34-7. Thursday's game will also be the Griffons' first away game of the year. Michael Hill is averaging 82.7 yards per game on the ground to lead the Griffon rushing attack with 4.3 yards per carry. Travis Partridge, the head coach's son, has passed for 129.0 yards per game completing 36 of 70 attempts with three touchdowns and three interceptions. Tarrell Downing, TJ Fanning and Michael Hill each have six receptions with Downing leading the team with 29.0 yards per game receiving. Defensively, Thomas Madget leads the team with 22 tackles while David Bass leads the team with seven tackles for loss for 32 yards and six sacks for 27 yards.
Last time out for Missouri Western
Sept. 17, 2011 - ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – For the first time since October 19, 2002 against Southwest Baptist (28-0) the Missouri Western football team recorded a shutout. Western defeated the Langston University Lions 47-0 in their first non-conference action of the season improving to 2-1.Western finished the game with 476 yards of total offense with 258 coming on the ground and 218 through the air.
Western took the opening kickoff right down the field but an interception by Langston defensive back Isaiah Ross on the goal line ended the Griffon threat. Western stopped the Lions on their first possession and then an Isaac Collins blocked punt set the Griffons up on the Langston seven yard line. Michael Hill plunged in from seven yards out for his first touchdown of the season and the Griffons first of the game with 10:43 to play in the first quarter.
The Lions took the next possession into Griffon territory but Western was able to stuff the Lions on a fourth and four. The Griffons took the ball 59 yards on 12 plays on the next possession with Taylor Anderson connecting on a 26 yard field goal with 2:28 to play in the half. Cody Kremer intercepted a Darrion Lewis pass on the next possession and once again Western had a nice drive going 49 yards on five plays with Anderson connecting on a 22 yard field goal putting the Griffons up 13-0 late in the first quarter.
Western continued to play well on both sides of the ball in the second quarter but only came away with two more Anderson field goals. One from 26 yards out and one from 19 yards out as time expired in the half helping Western to the 19-0 halftime lead.
Western had 234 yards at the half with Hill rushing 15 times for 57 yards and one touchdown. Reggie Jordan rushed once on a fake punt for 57 yards midway through the second quarter. Partridge connected on 7-of-19 passes for 105 yards as Adam Clausen had 48 yards on two catches which included a 42 yarder. Tom Madget led the Griffons with six tackles in the frame.
Lincoln had 96 yards in the half as Carlos Ross rushed six times for 17 yards. Lewis completed 10-23 passes with two interceptions. Darrow Barnes had four catches for 36 yards. Defensively Cayetano Hingle had five tackles leading the way for Langston.
The Griffon came out more determined in the second half scoring on their first play from scrimmage when Partridge connected with Tarrell Downing from 53 yards out putting Western up 26-0 early in the third quarter. Western scored again on a Partridge pitch and catch to Hill from four yards out with 8:42 to play in the quarter capping off a six play 55 yard drive.
Before the quarter was over Western tacked on one more touchdown when Partridge plunged in from one yard out as he accounted for three touchdowns in the game (2 passing, 1 rushing) capping off a four play 28 yard drive putting Western up 40-0 going into the fourth quarter.
Western put the icing on the cake late in the fourth when Dominic Thomas plunged in from ten yards giving Western the 47-0 victory.
The Griffons had another outstanding day defensively finishing with 10 tackles for a loss and five sacks. They also had three interceptions and blocked two punts. They put pressure on the Langston quarterbacks all day with five quarterback hurries. Madget finished with eight tackles while Bass had two sacks. Ben Pister had 1.5 sacks and four tackles.
Offensively Hill finished with 91 yards on 19 carries and one touchdown while Jerrin Walton had 47 on seven carries. Partridge had 199 yards through the air with two touchdown connecting on 12-of-24 passes. Hill had three catches while Clausen had two and Jordan had two for 36 yards.
The Lions had 212 yards with Ross finishing with 40 yards on 11 carries. Lewis had 99 yards passing connecting on 13-of-31 passes with three interceptions. Barnes had four catches for 36 yards. Hingle finished the game with 12 tackles and one sack.
Series history with Missouri Western
Thursday's meeting is the 40th meeting in the series between the Griffons and the Ichabods. The Griffons lead the all-time series 21-16-2. Washburn has won four of the last seven meetings and three of the last five meetings. The Ichabods' longest winning streak was from 1986 to 1990 when they won five straight - only to lose five straight to the Griffons starting in 1991. The Ichabod snapped a five-game losing streak to the Griffons in Topeka during the 2005 season on Homecoming. The Ichabods won in St. Joseph 31-24 on Sept. 29, 2007 for their first win since Nov. 10, 1990 snapping an eight-game losing streak in Spratt Stadium. In Topeka, the Ichabods lead the all-time series 11-8.
Last time Meeting with Missouri Western • Sept. 18, 2010
TOPEKA, Kan. -- The No. 15-ranked Washburn Ichabods mounted a furious comeback in the second half with an 82-minute lightning delay in the second half but came up short as the No. 11-ranked Missouri Western Griffons scored late sealing a 36-33 win.
After the Ichabods scored the first points of the game on a 47-yard punt return by
Ronnell Garner, the Griffons would score the next 28 points to take a 28-7 lead into the break at halftime. Coming out of the break, the Ichabods forced the Griffons into a three-and-out and would then go nine plays covering 36 yards capped by a 28-yard field goal by
Steve Ivanisevic.
On the Griffons' ensuing possession, after a pair of incomplete passes, Missouri Western's Drew Newhart was sacked in the end zone by
Michael Hollins a dropped the ball which was recovered by
Cameron Jackson for an Ichabod touchdown. Again the Ichabod defense forced a Griffon turnover at the Ichabod 39 as
Patrick Myrick forced a fumble by Michael Hill which was recovered by
Bryce Atagi and the Ichabods would then go on a seven-play, 61-yard drive with
Vershon Moore scoring from 3-yards out with 5:09 to go in the third quarter. Simoneau hit
Cameron Jackson for the 2-point conversion pulling Washburn with three at 28-25.
Then with the Ichabods getting ready to kickoff, the game was suspended at 8:12 p.m. for lightning and would not resume for 82 minutes later at 9:34 p.m.
After the kickoff, the Griffons took possession and after Newhart hit Terrell Downing for a 12-yard completion,
Pierre Desir knocked the ball from Downing and Hollins recovered at the Washburn 44. However the Ichabods were forced to punt and
Austin Hills' attempt was downed at the Griffon 5-yard line. On the first play of the Griffon drive, Newhart was sacked by
Dakota Palan-Johnson for a team safety cutting the Griffon lead to 28-27 with 3:06 to play in the third quarter. The Ichabods outgained the Griffons 120 to 39 with seven first downs to one.
Neither team would score in the fourth until the Ichabods went up 33-28 on a 1-yard touchdown plunge by
Justin Cooper with 5:55 to play in the game. But the Griffons would go on for the go-ahead score on a 60-yard drive going eight plays on a 36-yard reception by Hill from Newhart with 1:54 to go with the Griffons adding the two-point conversion putting them up 36-33.
The Ichabods took possession at the Washburn 28 and reached the Griffons' 39-yard line before Simoneau's pass intended for
Jake Iverson was picked off by Deondre Williams sealing the game.
The Ichabods outgained the Griffons 425 to 317 for the game as the Ichabod defense held Missouri Western to 118 yards of total offense in the second half. Washburn had 271 yards passing and 154 yards rushing while the Griffons had 260 yards through the air and 57 on the ground averaging 1.6 yards per rush.
Moore rushed for a game-high 114 yards while averaging 5.4 yards per carry. Simoneau finished 21 for 40 for 271 yards with three picks. Hastings had four catches for 77 yards and Moore added five catches for 40 yards.
Defensively for the Ichabods, Hollins led the Ichabods with 11 tackles with eight solo stops including 1.5 tackles for loss, one sack, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.
Michael Wilhoite had nine tackles. Jackson finished with five tackles, three of those tackles going for loss with a forced fumble and 1.5 sacks and the thrid quarter fumble recovery for a touchdown.
Newhart was 19 of 31 for 260 yards tossing four touchdown passes while being sacked six times. Hill finished with 130 yards receiving on five catches and the two touchdowns. Sean Whiters had nine tackles and Williams finished with six tackles and two interceptions including an 80-yard pick six for the Griffons.
Last time out for Washburn: #13 Ichabods 30, Missouri Southern 18 • Sept. 17, 2011
JOPLIN, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabods scored three fourth quarter touchdowns and twice rallied from four-point deficits to top Missouri Southern 30-14 at Fred Hughes Stadium.
The game was game was delayed one hour and 19 minutes after lightning was in the area and each team had roughly 30 minutes to get warmed up on the field.
The Ichabods took the first lead of the game in the first quarter and
Jeremy Linn connected of 29-yards with 7:16 to play capping a 11-play, 40-yard drive. Missouri Southern would then take the lead on a 99-yard, 11-play drive when Collin Howard hit Ne'Ronte Threat from 5-yards out as the Lions took a 7-3 lead into the half.
Halftime was reduced to from 20 minutes to 12 minutes to try to beat the potential thunderstorms which were coming into the area.
Washburn took the lead on a 19-yard touchdown from
Dane Simoneau to DeJuan Beard with 1:05 to play in the third.
The Lions regained their lead on their next possession when Kyle Webster scored from 2-yards out putting the Lions back up 14-10 with 14:23 to play in the game. From that point on it was all Washburn as the Ichabods scored the next 20 points of the game.
The Ichabods took the lead for good on a Simoneau to
Ronnell Garner 20-yard touchdown pass reception. After holding the Lions on a fourth down attempt, Simoneau connected on a 30-yard pass to Tore Hurst with 5:29 to play and then Simoneau threw for his third touchdown pass of the final quarter when he hit Beard for his second touchdown hook up of the night stretching the Washburn lead to 30-14.
Simoneau finished 23 of 41 from the field for 274 yards and four touchdown passes with one interceptions. Beard finished with 141 yards through the air with nine receptions.
Matt Kobbeman had four catches for 37 yards.
Justin Cooper had 83 yards on the ground on 19 carries.
Bryce Atagi led the Ichabods with 10 tackles with 2.5 tackles for loss.
Willie Williams had nine tackles and
Dakota Palan-Johnson with two for loss including two sacks.

lifted the Ichabods to 508-553-44 in their football history … moved the Ichabods to 3-0 on the season for the third time under head coach
Craig Schurig … moved the Ichabods to 2-0 in MIAA third time under Schurig and the first time since the 2006 season … moved the Ichabods to 21-20-1 all-time against the Lions taking the first lead ever in the series history … was the Ichabods' ninth straight win over the Lions … was the fifth straight win over the Lions in games played in Joplin.
The Ichabods in the national polls
The Ichabods climbed two spots from 13th to 8th in the AFCA Coaches Poll which was released on Sept. 19. Washburn has been ranked in the top 25 or has received votes for the top 25 poll in each of the last 19 weeks. The No. 8 ranking is the highest the Ichabods have been in the AFCA poll since the Nov. 1, 2005 poll when the Ichabods reached No. 5 in the nation.

Washburn will travel down the turnpike to face the Emporia State Hornets on Oct. 1, 2011 in a 1 p.m. kickoff from Welch Stadium. Washburn will then have a second straight road game on Oct. 8th at Truman before returning home for a non-conference match up against Central Oklahoma on Oct. 15.
