Ichabod basketball team to face Newman on Thursday in Wichita

  Opening Tip
•     The Washburn Ichabod basketball team will busy stretch continues on Thursday at Newman in the Ichabods' first true road test of the season.
•    Washburn is 2-2 this season after pounding Peru State on Tuesday in an 89-59 win over the Bobcats.
•    The Jets are 1-0 this season after beating Emporia State 80-86 on Tuesday night in their season opener.
•     The Jets will play all four MIAA Kansas schools this season in non-conference action. Last season the Jets were 1-3 against MIAA schools in Kansas and the year before that in the 2012-13 season the Jets were 4-0 sweeping Pitt State, Emporia State, Fort Hays State and Washburn.
•    Up next for the Ichabods is a trip overseas as they travel for four games in Hawaii with the first three taking place at the Hawaii-Hilo Thanksgiving Classic. Washburn will take on BYU-Hawaii on Nov. 28 before returning home to open MIAA play with Southwest Baptist on Dec. 4 and Missouri Southern on Dec. 6.
    
 Bod Notes
•    Alex North has recorded 12 double doubles in his career at Washburn … he has scored his 800th career point against Southwestern and has played in 92 games with 59 starts … he went over the 500-rebound total against the RiverHawks in the final game last season and enters the Newman game with 815 career points.
•    Kyle Wiggins went over the 800-point mark for his career against Minnesota State earlier this season … he has averaged 9.2 ppg in 90 games making 48 starts after averaging … he has scored 829 career points at Washburn.
•    Ichabod junior Christian Ulsaker is averaging 8.8 points with 6.5 rebounds a game this season … he recorded his first career double double against Peru State with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
•    The Ichabods have hit at least one 3-pointer in 312 games beginning the regular season opener against Augustana. The last game the Ichabods did not hit a 3-pointer was Dec. 30, 2003 at Missouri Western.
•    Prince Samuels is averaging 8.3 points a game off the bench and Turon Parker is scoring 8.8 points a game off the bench.
•    Kevin House leads the team in assists with 3.0 per game while averaging 3.0 rebounds and 5.0 points per game.
•    Jeremy Lickteig scored a career-high 14 points against Peru State in 13 minutes of play.
•    The Ichabods are 26 of 71 from 3-point range this season with Kyle Wiggins going 6 of 9 from deep. Ichabod opponents are 35 of 93 from 3-point range this season.
•    Washburn is 66 of 101 from the free throw line for a 65 percent average while their opponents are 72 of 104 hitting 69 percent of their charity stripe attempts.
•    The Ichabods have been called for 85 fouls compared to 84 for their opponents.
•    Washburn is +5.8 in rebounding margin and outrebounded Peru State 53 to 33 in its last game.
•    Turon Parker had a career-high five assists against Peru State and David Salach had career highs in points (6) and rebounds (5) in 12 minutes of play with his first two field goals at Washburn coming on massive dunks.

Newman Head coach Mark Potter

• Potter, a former Newman player and Assistant Coach, has compiled the highest winning percentage in Newman's basketball history. 
• In 1998, he was chosen to resurrect the men's basketball program after an 11-year hiatus. 
• He is 1-7 against the Ichabods.

 Last Time Out For The Ichabods
Washburn 89 • Peru State 59 • Nov. 18, 2014
TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods used a 64-point performance from the bench en route to an 89-59 win over Peru State improving to 2-2 on the season on Tuesday night at Schendel Court. 
The Ichabods led from start to finish as they jumped out to a 15-4 lead and never looked back in the 30-point win over Peru State. The Ichabods would go on to double up the Bobcats' score in the first half building a lead of 32 to 16 with 4:59 to play before Peru State cut the lead back to 14 at the break with Washburn leading 36-22. Washburn shot 41 percent in the first half, but struggled from the 3-point arch hitting only 1 of 12 attempts.
In the second half, Washburn shot 52 percent from the field as the Bobcats would not get closer than 11 points, which was with 18:30 remaining in the game, as the Ichabods led by as many as 31 in the contest.
Kyle Wiggins came off the bench to score 17 points hitting 5 of 6 shots from the field while Alex North scored 15 adding eight rebounds. Christian Ulsaker recorded his first double double at Washburn with 10 points and 10 rebounds and Jeremy Lickteig scored a career-high 14 off the bench in 13 minutes. Corday Sims and Jamar Cannon each had 15 to lead the Bobcats.
The Ichabods had 25 assists on 30 field goals in the game and finished 46 percent from the field and held a 53 to 33 rebound advantage. The 53 rebounds by the Ichabods were the most by a Washburn squad since recorded 51 against Bethany on Nov. 19, 2012.
Washburn also had a 25 to 4 advantage in fast break points and a 42 to 20 lead in points in the paint.

 About Newman
•    Newman went 9-17 last season and 6-12 in the Heartland Conference. They return two starters from last season in Ryan McCarthy and Jeremy Espinoza.
•    The Jets are 1-0 after defeating Emporia State in their season opener 86-60.
•    Reggie Baker had 19 points to lead the Jets and Luka Vermezovic had 14.

 Last time out for Newman
WICHITA – The Newman men's basketball team opened the 2014-15 season with a 86-80 win over Emporia State on Tuesday night (Nov. 18) at Fugate Gymnasium. The Jets moved to 1-0 on the season. Newcomers scored 70 of the 86 points for NU led by Reggie Baker with a game-high 19 points.
NU never trailed and led the whole game after a basket 15 seconds into the contest.
In the first five minutes, NU pulled out to a 14-5. The Jets held an early 4-0 lead after a dunk from Cortrael Colbert less than 1 minute into the contest. Reggie Baker and James Pegues scored during the fast start, and Ryan McCarthy hit a 3. The Jets went up 14-5 on a layup from Kramer Ammons with 14:46 remaining in the first half.
The Hornets didn't go away, cutting the early NU lead to one at 14-13 with an 8-0 run. With the margin two at 17-15, the Jets went on a 16-6 run to open up their largest lead of the half at 33-21 with 6:17 left. Baker started the spurt with a 3-pointer at the 10:37 mark. Baskets from Pegues and Colbert increased the score to 26-19, and Baker ended the run with seven points. He made a layup and then hit a 3-pointer for a 31-21 score. The Jets went up 33-21 after a Baker jumper. A late first-half run by ESU cut the deficit to three, 40-37, at halftime.
The Jets scored the first five points after the break to gain a 45-37 lead with 18:57 left in the second half. Pegues scored and then Baker hit another 3 for the 45-37 score. The margin was as large as 13 points in the second half. NU went in front 59-46 with 13:10 remaining about a Kevin Sexton lay in.
With 2:42 left, the Jets still held a double digit lead at 79-68 after a Jeremy Espinoza basket. The Hornets tried to make it interesting, cutting the advantage to five at 79-74 with a 6-0 run in less than 2 minutes. The Jets made enough free throws down the stretch to get the 86-80 win.
In the first half, NU took advantage of ESU's turnovers, holding a 15-2 edge in points off turnovers. For the game, the Jets scored 23 points off turnovers compared to 12 for ESU.
Baker, a junior from Avon Park, Fla., scored a game-high 19 points. He added three rebounds, one block and two steals in 28 minutes. James Pegues added 15 points in only 16 minutes due to foul trouble. Luka Vermezovic scored 14 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Also in double figures was Cortrael Colbert with 13 points, and he totaled a game-high seven assists. Colbert also had a game-high four steals. Newcomers scored 70 of the 86 points for the Jets.
NU shot 50 percent (28-56) from the field. The Jets had 17 assists on 28 made baskets.
ESU finished shooting 48.3 percent (28-58), including 58.6 percent (17-29) in the second half. Terrence Moore and Josh Pedersen each scored 15 points.

 Series history with Newman
•  Thursday's meeting with the Jets is the 26th all-time. 
•  The Ichabods lead the all-time series 19-6. 
•  The Ichabods have won the last 16 of the last 17 meetings with the Jets.
• The Jets snapped an Ichabods 15-game winning streak the last time the teams played in Wichita on Dec. 15, 2012 by an 86-69 score.

 Last meeting with Newman
(Nov. 23, 2013) TOPEKA, Kan. -- Kyle Wiggins scored a career-high 30 points leading the Washburn Ichabods to a 93-74 win over Newman.
The Ichabods used a couple of runs in the first half to break the game open while taking a 52-40 lead into the break over Newman (2-3). Washburn used a 10-2 run in the first two minutes of the game breaking a 7-7 tie and later in the half put together an 18-6 run stretching a 28-24 lead into a 43-30 margin as Wiggins scored nine points during the run. Washburn led by as many as 14 in the first half at 52-38 as they shot 52 percent from the field hitting 17 of 33 shots while going 8 of 15 from 3-point range.
Washburn led by as many as 25 in the second half as the Ichabods continued the hot shooting hitting 60 percent of their shots going 15 of 25 in the frame overall finishing the game at 55 percent shooting tossing in a season-high 11 3-pointers.
Wiggins' 30 point effort topped his 21-point high against Missouri Southern scored last season on Jan. 31, 2013. He led three others in double figures for the ichabods as Jeff Reid scored 14 and Stephon Drane and Korey Fisher each scored 10. Alex North had a career-high 14 rebounds adding nine points and seven assists.
Ryan McCarthy and Perryone Smith each had 14 to lead five Jets in double figures.
The Ichabods dominated on the glass outrebounding the Jets 43 to 25 turning 12 offensive rebounds into 15 second chance points.
