MIAA tournament opens Thursday with best-of-three series at Emporia State

Washburn will play a best-of-three series Thu-Sat at Emporia State in the first round of the MIAA tournament. The Ichabods are the No. 7 seed and ESU is No. 2.
The Ichabods are making their 12th appearance in the MIAA tournament and first since going 1-2 in 2012. They are 15-21 all-time in the tournament.
Washburn beat ESU in the 2012 first round and is 2-2 all-time in the tournament against the Hornets. Washburn is 6-5 in opening games.
The Ichabods finished the regular season 25-22 overall and seventh in the MIAA at 22-18. They are guaranteed their 2nd winning season in the last two years.
The 4 winners of the 1st round series will meet in Springfield, Mo., May 8-10 for the remaining rounds of the MIAA tournament.
Washburn had a season-high 6-game winning streak end last weekend while losing 3 of 4 at NSU.
ESU had a 15-game winning streak end in a loss in the finale Saturday against Lindenwood. The Hornets previous loss before the streak was when WU won the first 3 in their MIAA series.
Washburn won the MIAA series against ESU this year but lost twice in non-conference games as the season series was split 3-3.
Kyle Carnahan is batting .415 and he's reached base safely in all but one game this year. He had a 16-game hitting streak come to an end two weeks ago.
Carnahan entered the week 3rd in the MIAA in hitting and 1st with a .527 on-base pct.
Senior Brett Ash leads the MIAA with a 1.66 ERA and just a .168 opponent batting average. Only 1 other pitcher has below a 2.00 ERA and no other pitcher has lower than a .200 OBA.
Ash is 5-2 with all five wins coming in complete games.
Ash is 1st in WU history with 25 complete games, 3rd with 22 wins & 2nd with 193 K. 22 more K will move him to 1st.
Ash will tie the school record for innings pitched with 2 1/3 more innings.
Washburn finished 10-0 this year in game 2 of 4-game MIAA series but just 2-8 in finales.
Ash, Taylor Gentry and Eric Schmid all rank in the top 15 in the MIAA in ERA and opponent batting average.


MIAA tournament opens Thursday with best-of-three series at Emporia State
The Ichabods will make their 12th appearance in the MIAA tournament this week when they play a best-of-three series at Emporia State Thursday through Saturday at Trusler Sports Complex.

The two will play Thursday and Friday at 6 p.m. and then at 3 p.m. Saturday if needed. The winner will advance to the four-team, double elimination portion of the tournament May 8-10 in Springfield, Missouri.

Washburn is 25-22 overall and earned the the No. 7 seed with a 22-18 finish in the MIAA. The Hornets went 34-15 overall and 26-14 in the league to tie for second and get the No. 2 seed.

The winner of this series will play May 8 against the winner of the No. 3 Central Oklahoma/No. 6 Nebraska-Kearney series. No. 1 Central Missouri is hosting No. 8 Northeastern State and No. 4 Missouri Western is hosting No. 5 Southwest Baptist in the other two first round series this week.

Washburn MIAA tournament history
This is the second straight year the league has started the tournament with a three-game series and the first time Washburn has played in such a format since 1999. The Ichabods last went to the tournament when they won the opening round against ESU in 2012 and then lost in the semifinal and an elimination game. Washburn also played ESU in the first round in 2006 with a loss, in an elimination game in 2001 with a win and in a second round game in 1998 in a loss.

Washburn is 15-21 all-time in 11 appearances in the tournament and 6-5 in tournament openers.

Ash climbs to second in career strikeouts and is third in career wins
Senior Brett Ash moved to second in career strikeouts at Washburn when he recorded eight of them April 18 against Lincoln. He passed Mike Lineback (1982-85) and now has 193. He's 22 away from Jake Lenherr (2003-06).

The win against the Blue Tigers was his fifth straight complete game to give him 25 complete games, most at Washburn, and 22 wins, third most. He needs two more wins to catch Lenherr for second and four more to tie for first.

Ash is also first at Washburn with 39 games started. He's second with 259.0 innings pitched and needs 2 1/3 more to tie the school record. His career ERA of 3.23 is ninth among WU pitchers with at least 100 innings and third among pitchers with 200 innings.

Ash leads the MIAA in ERA and opponent batting average
Brett Ash leads the MIAA with a 1.66 ERA and a .168 opponent batting average. He's allowed just nine earned runs and 30 hits in eight starts.

Ash has not allowed more than five hits and two earned runs in a game this year. until his outing Friday at NSU when he gave up three earned runs off six hits.

Carnahan has reached safely in all but one game this year
Kyle Carnahan has nearly been on a season-long offensive streak as he's reached base safely in all but one game. He entered the week third in the MIAA batting .415 and first with a .527 on-base percentage.

Carnahan's only game being held without getting on base was March 22 in the third game at Pittsburg State. He's batting .500 (41 for 82) in the 26 games since then with a .671 slugging percentage and .598 on-base percentage.
Carnahan will look to become Washburn's first .400 hitter since Wes Joy hit .401 in 2007.

Ichabods tough in the middle
Washburn went 10-0 in the second game of four-game MIAA series this year. The Ichabods were 6-4 in the third games to make them 16-4 in the middle two games of the series. They were 5-5 in openers and 2-8 in finales. Washburn won five MIAA series, lost four and split one this year. They had one four-game sweep and were not swept this year.

Doubleheaders nearly always mean at least one win for Ichabods
The Ichabods went 21-11 this year in doubleheaders and they swept six of their 15 twin bills. They split nine and were only swept once, in the regular season finale at Northeastern State.

Washburn went 11-5 in the opener and 10-6 in the finale. The Ichabods are 4-11 in single games this year.

Recapping two crazy innings
Washburn sent 18 batters to the plate in the fourth inning of game two Saturday at Northeastern State as they tied a school record with 14 runs in the inning. The Ichabods batted .667 (10 for 15) in that inning with eight singles, a double and triple.

The first out wasn't recorded until Washburn's 14th plate appearance that inning. The first 13 batters reached safely with nine hits, a walk, hit by pitch, error and fielder's choice. The Ichabods had 10 runs plated that inning before the first out.

Kyle Carnahan had a double and a triple and four RBI in the inning.

Washburn set the school record the first time with a 14-run inning April 13, 2012, against Lincoln in what became an 18-6 win.

The RiverHawks nearly outdid Washburn with a 13-run inning in the sixth as they scored 13 runs off 10 hits and three Washburn errors. They batted .769 (10 for 13) with three doubles and a home run and scored 10 of their runs before recording their first out.

Washburn also gave up a school record 13 runs on April 26, 2004, in a 32-0 loss to Central Missouri.

Washburn and Northeastern State combined to score 45 runs off 42 hits in the game with 60 percent of the runs and 48 percent of the hits coming in those two half innings. They combined to use eight different pitchers in the two half innings.

About Emporia State
The Hornets went 11-1 in their final three MIAA series to jump to second in the league at 26-14. They went 34-15 overall and 21-7 at home. Washburn won two of those games in Emporia.

Price Jacobs is batting .362 to lead the team and Dean Long has a team-high 13 home runs. Shawn Talkington went 6-2 with a 3.06 ERA in 11 starts on the mound.

Jacobs batted .522 (12 for 23) in the six games this year against Washburn with at least one hit in every game and five on April 6.

Season Notes
- AJ Green pitched in nine straight relief appearances without allowing an earned run. That streak ended Saturday at NSU as he allowed an earned run after 9 2/3 innings without one.
- Eric Schmid is on pace to finish in the top 15 in ERA with a 3.76 average entering the tournament but he has a 1-3 record and six no decisions.
- Washburn has used 17 different pitchers this year. Ten have made starts and 14 have worked out of the bullpen at least once. Seven of the pitchers have ERAs under 4.00.
- Parker Gibson is third in the MIAA with 21 stolen bases and Kyle Carnahan is eighth with 13.
- Washburn's 25 wins is the most since 27 in 2012. The Ichabods won 29 in 2006 and 37 in 2000.

Up Next
The four series winners will meet May 8-10 in Springfield, Mo., for the remaining rounds of the MIAA tournament. Those rounds will be double elimination and the winner will earn an automatic berth in the NCAA Central Region tournament May 15-18.

The winner of the WU/ESU series will play May 8 against the No. 3 Central Oklahoma/No. 6 Nebraska-Kearney series.

Washburn has never played those two in the tournament as they joined the league last year.
