Ichabod men's basketball team returns to action hosting SBU on Saturday

 Opening Tip
•     The Washburn Ichabod men's basketball team will play its only home game in the month of December as they will play host to Southwest Baptist on Saturday at 7 p.m. in Lee Arena.
•    Washburn (5-2, 1-1 MIAA) fell last time 82-76 at Nebraska-Kearney last time out on Dec. 5.
•    The Bearcats (6-2, 2-1 MIAA) is coming off a 70-60 win at home to  Nebraska-Kearney on Dec. 10.
•    The Ichabods have won four-straight over the Bearcats and the last seven games at home.
•    Washburn's last loss to the Bearcats in Lee Arena was on Jan. 17, 2007 in a 76-69 win by Southwest Baptist.
•    The Bearcats are playing their first official road game of the season after having exhibition games in back-to-back days facing NCAA Division I foes Louisiana Tech (87-53 loss) and Louisiana State (98-72 loss) on Nov. 5 and Nov. 6.

 Ichabod Notes
•    Overall the Ichabods have a balanced scoring attack with four players averaging at least 9.3 points per game and they have six averaging at least 7.1 ppg.
•    The Ichabods are +6.4 in rebound margin this season.
•    Tyas Martin tied a career-high with four field goals and eight field goal attempts.
•    Brady Skeens had a career-high five blocks and tied career highs with six field goals and eight field goal attempts en route to 13 points. He was the first Ichabod since Bobby Chipman to record five blocks in a game (Missouri Southern - 1/31/13).
•    Skeens had his second double double of his career adding 10 rebounds adding four assists with 13 points against the Lopers.
•    Cameron Wiggins tied his career high for the second straight game with 21 points against the Lopers and his 16 field goal attempts was a career high. He attempted only 22 shots his entire freshman season in 13 games.
•    Javion Blake had a career-high 22 points against the Lopers and his 12th free throws and 15 free throw attempts were also career highs. It is the second-straight game he's set a career high in free throws made after hitting nine at Fort Hays State. 
•    The 15 free throws by Blake were the most attempted by an Ichabod since Chris Deans had 13 against CSU-San Bernardino on Nov. 9, 2013.

•     is in his 37th season at the helm of the Ichabods.

  Last Time Out For The Ichabods
Nebraska-Kearney 82, Washburn 76 -- Dec. 5, 2015
KEARNEY, Neb. -- A 9-0 run to start the second half wasn't enough as Nebraska-Kearney hit 13 3-pointers and eight in the second half in an 82-76 win.
After trailing by five at the half, Washburn (5-2, 1-1 MIAA) scored nine straight over the first 4:05 of the half taking a 45-41 lead.
The Lopers (4-3, 1-1 MIAA) came back with a 14-5 run of their own to regain the lead at 55-50 with 10:26 to play in the game.
After a Brady Skeens layup pulling the Ichabods with one at 59-58 with 9:05 to go, the Lopers hit back to back 3's by Trey Lansman to go up seven at 65-58 with 6:53 to play.
Washburn used a 10-3 run to go up 70-68 with 4:07 to play as the Ichabods hit all eight free throw attempts.
Washburn took a 73-70 lead on a Randall Smith 3-pointer with 3:15 to go before outscoring the Ichabods 12-3 the remainder of the game for the win.
The Lopers started out on fire hitting their first three 3-pointers jumping out to a 9-2 lead and would go on to lead 13-4 with 15:50 to play in the frame. Starting out UNK hit 5 of 6 3-pointers before finishing 5 of 11 in the half. Washburn was 3 of 8 from three as they trailed 41-36 entering the break.
Javion Blake led the Ichabods 22 points hitting 12 of 15 free throws and Cameron Wiggins hit for 21 hitting three 3-pointers. Brady Skeens recorded his second double double with 13 points, 10 rebounds, five blocks and four assists.
Connor Beranek had 23 off the bench to lead the Lopes and Trey Lansman had 22.
Washburn finished 25 of 53 from the field hitting 6 of 16 3-pointers and the Lopers were 27 of 62 hitting 13 of 26 3-pointers in the win.  

 About Southwest Baptist
•    The Bearcats care 6-2 and 2-1 in the MIAA after beating Nebraska-Kearney 70-60 on Dec. 10 in Bolivar.
•    After hitting 13 3-pointers against the Ichabods the Lopers were held to six against the Bearcats.
•    The Bearcats have hit 63 3-pointers this season and 200 field goals overall … they  are 63 of 153 from deep overall for a .412 percentage.
•    The Bearcats have won four of their last five games with the lone loss coming to Northwest Missouri.
•    Brian Patterson leads the team with 17.3 ppg adding 7.0 rebounds per game. Logan Hovey is averaging a double double with 14 points and 10.5 rebounds per game.

  Series History with Southwest Baptist
•    Saturday's meeting will be the 51st between Washburn and Southwest Baptist. 
•    The Ichabods lead the all-time series 34-16. 
•    In Topeka the Ichabods are 20-3 against SBU since joining the MIAA.
•    Washburn has won 23 of the last 30 games. 
•    Washburn is 29-11 against SBU in MIAA games. 
•    The Ichabods have won the last seven games played in Topeka and have gone 3-1 against the Bearcats in the MIAA Tournament.

 Last meeting with Southwest Baptist
(Dec. 4, 2014) TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabod men's basketball team opened MIAA play with 68-56 win over Southwest Baptist leading from start to finish. 
The Ichabods (4-5, 1-0 MIAA) were led by Kyle Wiggins who scored 16 of his game-high 24 points in the first half as he finished 8 of 11 from the field and 3 of 5 from 3-point range hitting all five free throw attempts in the win. Wiggins scored 13 of the Ichabods first 27 points in the first 14 minutes of the game.
Washburn led by as many as 16 in the first half as the Ichabods shot a blistering 63 percent from the field hitting 6 of 9 3-point attempts as the Ichabods took a 41-25 lead into the break.
In the second half, the Bearcats (3-5, 0-1 MIAA) opened the frame with a 10-4 run over the first 8:22 of the half as the Ichabods were 2 of 7 from the field during the run as the Bearcats cut the lead to 10 at 45-35 with 12:28 left to play. A pair of free throws by Alex North, who finished with 13 points, and a 3-pointer by Turon Parker, stretched the Ichabod lead back out to 15 points with 10:12 to play. 
SBU twice cut the lead to nine and once to seven at 55-48 with 5:27 to go, but a free throw and a jumper by North and then back to back lay ups by Wiggins and Algie Key put Washburn up by 12 and the Bearcats would not get closer than 11 the rest of the way.
The win was the fourth in a row over the Bearcats and dropped Southwest Baptist to 20-3 against the Ichabods in MIAA games played in Topeka.
Washburn's David Salach had a career-high 10 rebounds and three blocks in his first start as an Ichabod. The Ichabods held a 32 to 26 advantage on the glass in the game recording eight blocks in the contest. Menas Stephens had 14 points to lead SBU.  
Last time out for Southwest Baptist
(Dec. 10, 2015) BOLIVAR, Mo. --  Bolivar, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University men's basketball team received a big game from Brian Patterson as they picked up a big 70-60 victory over Nebraska-Kearney on Thursday evening. With the win, SBU improves to 6-2 (2-1 MIAA) on the season.
The Bearcats and Lopers exchanged buckets to open up the contest, with layups from Marley Biyendolo and Brian Patterson gave SBU an early 4-2 lead. UNK answered quickly with a 7-0 run, as SBU went down 9-4, but a Patterson jumper with 9:24 left in the first half gave the lead back to SBU at 12-11. SBU and UNK once again exchanged baskets, with SBU holding a small lead over the next seven minutes of action. After leading 26-24 with 2:28 left in the half, a pair of free throw from Logan Hovey, a layup from Cartier Dean, and a three from Andy Campbell right before the break gave SBU a 33-24 halftime lead.
In the second half the Bearcats continued to push their lead, taking a double-digit advantage (40-29) off of a Biyendolo layup with 16:44 left in the game. UNK slowly started to chip away at the lead, using a 10-0 run to cut the SBU lead down to one, but a big Eli Sample three with 13:20 left gave the Bearcats a 43-39 lead. Kearney responded by taking their first lead of the second half (45-43) with 11:09 to go, and SBU and UNK exchanged baskets over the next six minutes before a pair of free throws by Patterson gave SBU the lead back at 53-51 with 4:45 to go. SBU used a 6-0 run off of free throws from Patterson and a steal and layup from Nate Nahirny to extend their lead to 57-51. UNK continued to hang around, cutting the SBU lead back to two (57-55) with 3:12 left, but a layup from Elliott Warren and a pair of free throws from Sample once again stretch it back to six (61-55). UNK would give once last surge, cutting the lead to three (63-60) with 1:34 left, but strong SBU defense and clutch free throws sealed the 70-60 victory for the Bearcats.
Brian Patterson led the Bearcats with a career high 25 points off of 8 of 12 shooting from the field, while also collecting a game high 9 rebounds. Off of the bench, Eli Sample chipped in 11 points while Marley Biyendolo added 8 points and Logan Hovey had 8 points and 7 rebounds. As a team, SBU shot 45.3% from the field, 33.3% from beyond the arc, and 90.0% from the free throw line.

•     Washburn is the eighth-winningest program in NCAA Division II history by victories.
•     Washburn is the winningest MIAA program since the 1989-90 season with an overall record of 536-251 since joining the conference and the NCAA.
•    The Ichabods have recorded 25 20-win seasons and they have one 30-win seasons after going 35-4 during the 1986-87 NAIA Championship season.
