WICHITA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabod baseball team hit three grand slams in its MIAA opening doubleheader taking game one 9-3 and winning game two off of
David Gauntt's second of the day in walkoff fashion in a 14-11 victory. The Ichabods and Southwest Baptist will continue the series at noon at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium in Wichita.
With the doubleheader sweep, Washburn improves to 5-0 and 2-0 in the MIAA starting the season 5-0 for the first time since 1969.
Game 1 - Washburn 9, Southwest Baptist 3After the Bearcats (3-3, 0-2 MIAA) scored three runs in the top of the third, Washburn came back with four in the bottom of the frame on Gauntt's first grand slam of the day scoring
Payton Soicher and
Parker Gibson who reached via singles and
Kyle Carnahan who walked.
The Ichabods added four more in the fifth inning on a grand slam by
Connor Crimmins scoring Gibson, Carnahan and Gauntt pushing Washburn out to an 8-3 lead.
Washburn added another run in the sixth inning when Gibson drove in Soicher who reached on a double.
Maustin Otterstatter improved to 2-0 on the season allowing two earned runs scattering four hits and striking out five.
Gibson finished with three hits scoring two runs in the opener.
Game 2Â - Washburn 14, Southwest Baptist 11The Ichabods rallied from a 6-0 deficit after the Ichabods gave up six unearned runs in the first inning after committing two errors. The Ichabods got two runs back in the bottom of the first after Gibson and
Riley Krane were scored on a double by Carnahan.
Washburn cut the lead to 6-4 after getting two more in the third inning on RBI singles by Crimmins and
Tanner Triggs.
Washburn tied the score in the fifth inning with RBI by Johnson and Triggs and then in the sixth inning, Washburn took the lead with a pair of runs in the going up 8-6.
Southwest Baptist cut the lead to one with a solo run in the top of the seventh and would go up 11-8 adding four more runs in the top of the eighth inning.
Again Washburn rallied to get within two scoring two runs in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI double by KRane and a bases loaded walk by
Wes Jones.
After holding the Bearcats scoreless in the ninth, Soicher led off the inning on an error by SBU and then stole second and reached third on a wild pitch. After Krane drew a walk, SBU walked Carnahan intentionally loading the bases for Gauntt's second grand slam of the day giving the Ichabods the 14-11 win.
Gibson had four hits and scored four runs while
Ryne Dowling pitched 1 and 2/3 innings allowing one hit and striking out two for the win.
