JOPLIN, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabod baseball team was swept in the opening doubleheader of a four-game series at No. 19-ranked Missouri Southern. The series will continue with single nine inning games on Friday starting at 1 p.m. and Saturday starting at noon in Joplin.
Game 1 - Missouri Southern 11, Washburn 9The Ichabods were down 7-0 after two innings as the Lions scored two in the bottom of the first and then recorded five unearned runs in the bottom of the second jumping out to the big lead.
Washburn got on a board on a 2-RBI double by
David Gauntt sending
Riley Krane home.
In the sixth, the Ichabods scored two more on a 2-run RBI Gauntt again scoring Krane who singled cutting the Lion lead to 7-3.
Washburn scored six in the seventh to make the score 11-9, but could not get closer.
Wes Jones led off the game with a single and it was followed by a single by
Parker Gibson. Krane and Gauntt were both hit by a pitch and
Connor Crimmins drove in a run with a single.
Tanner Triggs cleared the bases with a 3-run home run but the Ichabods finished with two straight ground outs to end the game.
Krane, Gauntt and Jones each had two hits and Gauntt and Triggs each drove in three. Krane scored three times.
Dan Gabler took the loss dropping to 3-1 on the season.
Game 2 - MSSU 14, WU 1The Lions (24-6, 15-3 MIAA) held the Ichabods (21-10, 14-8 MIAA) to four hits in the second game leading to a 14-1 win.
The Lions scored one in the first and broke the game open with eight in the second leading to the win.
Washburn's run came in the third inning when
Corey Gragg singled to lead off the frame and then scored on an RBI single by
Parker Gibson.
Crimmins, Triggs and Gragg recorded the other three hits for the Ichabods.
Eric Schmid took the loss falling to 4-1 on the season.
