No. 14 Ichabods play host to Bronchos on Friday and RiverHawks on Saturday

TOPEKA, Kan. -- No. 14 Washburn women's tennis returns home for a pair of conference matches first against Central Oklahoma at 2 p.m. on Friday and finishing off the week with Northeastern State at 10 a.m. on Saturday. 
 

FIRST SERVE

  • No. 14 Washburn women's tennis continues conference action with back-to-back matches at home against Central Oklahoma on Friday and Northeastern State on Saturday. 
  • The Ichabods are 12-3 on the year and 2-1 in the MIAA after a 5-2 road victory over Newman on April 4. 
  • The Bronchos are 5-6 overall on the year and 1-2 in the MIAA coming off a 4-3 loss at home to Nebraska-Kearney on April 6. 
  • The RiverHawks have an 7-4 record on the year with a 2-1 mark inside the MIAA. They won a 4-3 home match over Nebraska-Kearney last time out and face Northwest Missouri on Friday before taking on the Ichabods. 
  • The Ichabods moved to No. 14 in the latest ITA rankings after going 2-0 last week.
  • Washburn went 18-7 in 2022-23 with a 6-2 record in the MIAA during the regular season. They won the MIAA Championship Tournament and advanced to the NCAA National Quarterfinals for the first time in program history. 
  • The Ichabods return six players from last season's roster while adding three freshmen and one transfer to complete the roster. 

SINGLES SITUATION

  • Washburn has one player ranked on the singles side of the latest ITA rankings with Maja Jung at No. 5 .
  • For the season the Ichabods are 88-55 (61.5%) in singles matches and are 51-33 in duals. 
  • Maja Jung leads the team with an 18-6 record, she has a 11-3 record from No. 1. 
  • Renske Ubachs is 12-10 in singles competition and has gone 7-6 from No. 2. 
  • Peyton Koper is 9-6 on the year playing between two and four and has gone 3-1 at No. 4. 
  • Isabella Martensson is 9-5 overall and has gone 4-0 when playing at No. 6.  
  • Martine Carroll is 10-6 in singles matches this season with a 2-0 record at No. 4. 
  • Maddie Shelley is 10-2 on the year, with a 3-1 record at No. 6. 
  • Issabella Pensavalle has gone 4-2 this year while Daphney Koutsofta has gone 4-1.

DOUBLES DOWNLOAD

  • The Ichabods have one doubles duo in the ITA Doubles rankings with Maja Jung and Lara Schmid remaining ranked No. 7. 
  • On the year the Ichabods have gone 56-21 (72.7%) on the year with a 32-10 record in duals. 
  • Jung and Schmid are tied for the most wins together with an 15-6 record as a duo and they have gone 7-3 together at No. 1. 
  • Maddie Shelley and Renske Ubachs have a 15-3 record together and have gone 10-2 from No. 3. 
  • Peyton Koper and Isabella Martensson have gone 8-4 together overall this season at 7-4 from No. 2. 
  • Ubachs has a team-high 18 doubles victories this season with Jung and Shelley just behind at 17.

LAST TIME OUT

Washburn 5, Newman 2 (April 4, 2024) 

WICHITA, Kan. -- No. 12 Washburn finished up its three-match road trip with a 5-2 win over Newman on Thursday afternoon. The Ichabods are off for over a week before returning to Topeka to take on Central Oklahoma on Friday, April 12.  

Washburn (12-3, 2-1 MIAA) started doubles play with a 6-2 win from Renske Ubachs and Maddie Shelley at No. 2 to gain the advantage. Issabella Pensavalle and Martine Carroll followed with a 6-2 win of their own on court three to secure the point over the Jets (11-8, 1-2 MIAA). Maja Jung and Isabella Martensson completed a sweep of doubles, winning 6-4 from No. 1.  

Singles play started just as quickly with the Ichabods adding another point after Carroll won in two-sets, dropping only one set point for 6-1 and 6-0 wins from No. 3. Shelley grinded out a 6-4 first set victory from No. 5 and carried the momentum to a swift 6-1 win in the second to set up match point. Cadence Lynn opened up her duel with a 6-2 win in the first set on court six and finished off the duel and secured the win with a 6-3 victory in set two.  

 Newman was able to get on the board as No. 3 Jung lost a three-set match to No. 57 Dana Issabayeva at No. 1, falling in a second set tiebreaker 7-3 and 10-7 in the third set super tiebreaker. After losing the first set 6-1, Martensson rallied for 6-2 and 6-3 victories from No. 4 to add another point. No. 74 Ubachs lost a 8-6 tiebreaker in the first set, won 6-3 in the second to force a third but fell 10-5 in the super tiebreaker to complete the match.  

HEAD COACH KIRBY RONNING

  • Ronning is in year four as the head coach of the men's and women's tennis teams at Washburn  
  • Has led both teams to the NCAA Tournament in every season at the helm with a 121-47 combined record with Washburn.
  • Was named the ITA Central Region Coach of the Year on both the men's and women's side after the 2022-23 season.   
  • Prior to joining the Ichabods Ronning spent four seasons as the assistant coach at Azusa Pacific from 2016-2022
  • As a player, he played for four years at Bethel University (Minn.). Ronning received his bachelor's degree in Business from Bethel in 2014 and earned his master's degree in Physical Education at Azusa Pacific in May 2020.

THE ASSISTANTS

  • Graduate assistants Sofia Smagina and Casie Curry begin their first season on the Ichabod coaching staff while Kurt Reid and Miller Zeiders enter their fifth and second seasons respectively.  
  • Kurt Reid enters his fifth season as an assistant with the Ichabods. 
  • He started his collegiate tennis career at Tulsa (1977-78) before transferring to Washburn for the 1978-79 season.
  • Reid, a Topeka-native, played tennis at Topeka West High School and was elected to the Topeka West Sports Hall of Fame in 2015. 
  • Zeiders enters his second season with Washburn and his first as a volunteer assistant after serving as a graduate assistant in 2022-23. 
  • Zeiders joins the Ichabods after a four-year career at Washburn from 2018-22 where he went 11-3 in singles and 9-6 in doubles. 
  • Former All-American Sofia Smagina joins the coaching staff after wrapping up one of the best seasons in Ichabod tennis history in 2022-23. 
  • Finished as the runner-up at the ITA Cup in singles and was named the MIAA Player of the Year while going 30-3 in singles and 26-5 in doubles in her one season at Washburn. Joined the Ichabods as a transfer from Kansas. 
  • Casie Curry rounds out the coaching staff as a graduate assistant after spending one season with Washburn in 2022-23. 
  • Curry received All-MIAA recognition in both singles and doubles while going 16-11 and 22-6 respectively. She joined the Ichabods after transferring from Midwestern State.

ABOUT THE CENTRAL OKLAHOMA BRONCHOS

  • Central Oklahoma is 5-6 on the year and 1-2 in the MIAA after a 4-3 home loss to Nebraska-Kearney on April 6.
  • The Bronchos are 2-3 in road matches away from Broncho Courts.
  • Last season Central Oklahoma went 10-11 overall and 5-3 in the MIAA advancing to the semifinals of the MIAA Tournament and the first round of the NCAA Central Regional Tournament. 
  • The Bronchos have gone 35-27 (56.5%) in singles matches this season. 
  • Pete Komada is ranked No. 60 in the latest ITA singles rankings while Nefeli Zafeiri is slotted at No. 69.

  • Blythe Buntrock and Pete Komada are ranked No. 24 in the ITA doubles rankings. 
  • Karyna Yuchenko and Anika Ouwejan are 7-2 together this season all coming at No. 3. 

BRONCHOS STAFF 

  • Joe Vann is in his 3rd season as the head coach at Central Oklahoma 
  • came to UCO from UT Tyler, where he spent four years as the assistant coach for both men's and women's programs
  • In his first season, Vann led Central Oklahoma to its best season in school history. The Bronchos won a school record 24 matches. UCO won the regular season MIAA title before winning the MIAA postseason championship
  • Graduate assistant Izumi Asano rounds out the coaching staff

HISTORY WITH CENTRAL OKLAHOMA

  • Friday will be the 20th match between Washburn and Central Oklahoma with the Bronchos leading the all-time series 15-4.
  • The series began on April 12, 1998 with a 9-0 win for UCO in Topeka. 
  • Washburn is 2-5 against Central Oklahoma in Topeka. 
  • Last season the Ichabods lost a 4-3 match to the Bronchos on the road.

ABOUT THE NORTHEASTERN STATE RIVERHAWKS

  • Northeastern State is 7-4 on the year and 2-1 in the MIAA after a 4-3 home win over Nebraska-Kearney on April 7. 
  • The RiverHawks are 0-4 in true road matches away from the NSU Tennis Complex this season. 
  • Last season Northeastern State went 12-8 overall and 5-3 inside the MIAA, advancing to the MIAA Tournament Championship where they fell 4-3 to Washburn.

RIVERHAWKS STAFF 

  • is in his fourth season as head coach for the Northeastern State women's tennis program.
  • came to Tahlequah in December 2020 from USC Upstate (Spartanburg, S.C.), where he was the head coach for both men's and women's tennis programs for two seasons
  • Prior to assuming the head coach position at USC Upstate, McLane was the program's top assistant for two seasons.
  • Volunteer assistant Mark Nelson completes the staff 

HISTORY WITH NORTHEASTERN STATE

  • Saturday will be the 22nd meeting between Washburn and Northeastern State all-time with the Ichabods leading the series 16-5.
  • The first match between the two was on March 3, 2000 and was a 6-3 win for the RiverHawks in Topeka. 
  • Washburn is 2-4 against Northeastern State in Topeka. 
  • The Ichabods have won the last five matches in the series including both last season including a 4-3 win in the MIAA Championship Tournament. 


MILESTONE MARKERS

  • Maja Jung is one doubles victory away from reaching 70 with Washburn. 
  • Isabella Martensson is three doubles victories from totaling 50 with the Ichabods. 
  • Lara Schmid needs 10 doubles victories to reach 50 at Washburn. 

SCHEDULE SPRING FORWARD 

  • The Ichabods head to St. Joseph, Mo. for a midweek match against Missouri Western State on April 17.
  • Senior day for Washburn will take place on April 27 against Fort Hays State. 
  • The women's MIAA Tournament will take place in Edmond, Okla. from May 3 to May 5.
