Ichabod cross country teams prepped for MIAA Championships

The Washburn Ichabod men's and women's cross country will compete in the first MIAA Championship of the calendar year at the 2025 MIAA Cross Country Championships in Pittsburg, Kan. on Oct. 25 at the Four Oaks Golf Course.

TIMING
The women's race will begin at 10 a.m. and the men's race is an 8K starting at 11 a.m. with the awards presentation set to take place at noon.
 
WHO IS GOING
Scheduled to compete for the Ichabod women's squad will be Riley Britton, Jordyn Cleary, Grace Collins, Jolie Evans, Lexie Fontaine, Rylee Ismert, Kyla Lochtefeld and Ebba Wetterberg.
The men's lineup will consist of Alex Adams, Sebastiaan Horselenberg, Donald Kibet, Adrian Lehman, Lukas Mehl, Shane Mullen, Sam Nesbitt, Tommy Roehl,  Ludovico Vacarri and Trent Zimbelman.
 
WASHBURN NATIONAL RANKINGS
The Washburn Ichabod men's squad is ranked third in the USTFCCCA Regional poll behind Northwest Missouri and Pittsburg State and have been third in all five regional polls so far this season. The Ichabods men are No. 17 in the fifth national poll after sitting 20th in last week's poll.
 
MIAA PRESEASON POLLS
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Washburn Ichabod men's cross country team was picked fourth and the women's squad was picked in seventh in the MIAA Preseason Coaches Polls that were released prior to the start of the season.
 
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE ICHABODS
MEN
FORT WORTH, Texas – The Washburn men's cross country team turned in another strong team performance at the Dallas Baptist Old Glory Gallop, placing three runners in the top 15 and seven in the top 50 in a field including more than 400 entries. The Ichabods finished second overall as a team out of 40 teams overall.
Leading the way was Donald Kibet, who ran to a second-place finish in 23:46.16, just behind the individual winner. Tommy Roehl followed close behind in sixth place (24:14.82). Sebastiaan Horselenberg gave Washburn its third top-15 finisher, clocking 24:35.71 for 15th.
Lukas Mehl and Adrian Lehman rounded out the Ichabods' scoring five with near-identical times, finishing 33rd (24:49.07) and 34th (24:52.56).
Ludovico Vaccari (40th, 25:01.56) and Alex Adams (43rd, 25:03.19) were just seconds behind, helping tighten the team's overall spread.
Additional Washburn finishers included:

•    Kyle Wagoner – 87th, 25:48.67
•    Connor Burkdoll – 119th, 26:11.20
•    Devin Trent – 133rd, 26:21.32
The Ichabods' depth was once again on display with 11 runners inside the top 120 in a field that featured several nationally ranked programs from across NCAA Division I and II.
As a team, the Ichabods were the top-finishing NCAA D2 team outrunning several NCAA DI squads. Butler County won the team title with 50 points ahead of Washburn's 85 team points. MSU Denver had 121 points and Dallas Baptist followed with 125 team points.
 
WOMEN
FORT WORTH, Texas – The Washburn women's cross country team posted another solid team performance on Saturday morning at the Old Glory Gallop, placing five runners in the top 60 en route to a seventh-place finish out of 40 teams.
Kyla Lochtefeld paced the Ichabods with a fifth-place finish in 17:35.56. Lexie Fontaine added another top-15 performance, crossing the line in 18:00.15 to place 12th overall.
Jolie Evans finished 50th in 18:47.45, just ahead of Riley Britton (52nd, 18:48.18) and Grace Collins (55th, 18:50.31) to round out Washburn's scoring five. Rylee Ismert (56th, 18:50.77) and Ebba Wetterberg (63rd, 19:01.50) also stayed close behind, helping tighten the Ichabods' overall spread to under 90 seconds between the top seven.
Jordyn Cleary (89th, 19:18.02) and Katy  Menke (111th, 19:42.88) completed Washburn's lineup, giving the Ichabods nine runners under 20 minutes on the day.
The strong pack effort and Lochtefeld's front-running performance kept Washburn competitive among several Division I and nationally ranked Division II programs in attendance.
The Ichabods' 174 team points finished behind Simon Fraser (108), Midwestern State (116), Texas State (127), UT-Tyler (135), MSU-Denver (150) and Dallas Baptist (158).
 
UP NEXT
The Ichabods will return to action Nov. 8 at the NCAA Central Regional Championships in Joplin, Mo. at the Tom Rutledge Cross Country Course.
