Kickoff
The Washburn Ichabods will return to conference action this weekend as they head to Maryville, Mo., to take on Northwest Missouri in a top-ten match up against the Bearcats. Washburn improved to 7-0 for the first time since 1907 following its 48-3 win over Central Oklahoma while the Bearcats are 6-1 overall after routing Eastern New Mexico 65-20 on Oct. 15. The game will also be homecoming for the Bearcats on Saturday.
Game story lines
• Washburn has won its last 11 football games dating back to last season. The streak is tied for the longest current NCAA Division II streak in the nation with Colorado State-Pueblo. The last team to beat the Ichabods was Northwest Missouri in Topeka in a 41-40 win on Oct. 23, 2010 when the Ichabods went for two late in the game and the conversion pass was deflected.
• The Ichabods have won their last nine games away from Yager Stadium with their last defeat coming in a 55-45 loss at Central Missouri on Sept. 25, 2010. One of those wins was in Topeka at Hummer Sports Park in a 45-14 win over Midwestern State in the 2010 Kanza Bowl.
• Washburn is looking for its first and only 8-0 start in school history since the 1907 season when they Ichabods won the Kansas Conference Championship defeating Kansas, Kansas State, Wichita State and Oklahoma to finish out the season with a perfect 8-0 record allowing only 11 points during the season.
• The Ichabods moved up to No. 3 in the Oct. 18 American Football Coaches Association top 25 coaches poll after being ranked No. 5 the last two weeks. The No. 3 ranking is the highest mark in school history in the AFCA poll. The Bearcats enter the game ranked No. 6 in the AFCA top 25 coaches poll.

Washburn head football coach
Craig Schurig was named head coach of the Ichabod football program Dec. 28, 2001. Schurig is 69-41 (.602) in his tenth season as the Ichabod head coach and he is 54-32 (.600) against the MIAA. He has led the Ichabods to two NCAA Playoff appearances and two bowl appearance championships as well as the 2005 MIAA regular season outright championship as well as recording seven straight winning seasons for the first time in the program's history. Schurig's 69 wins are the most in school history passing Dick Godlove (1946-58) with a 42-14 win over Truman on Oct. 8, 2011.
Northwest Missouri head coach Adam Dorrel is 6-1 in his first season as the Bearcats' head coach. Dorrel spent seven seasons on the Bearcats' coaching staff and the last four as the offensive coordinator. He was a three-year captain for the Bearcats from 1993 to 1997 earning all-American honors as a senior and three-time all-MIAA honors on the offensive line.

Ichabod sophomore DeJuan Beard leads the team with 31 receptions for 493 yards (which is second on the squad) and also leads the team with eight touchdown receptions. He is averaging 70.4 receiving yards per game this season.

Ronnell Garner is second on the team with 30 receptions while leading the team with 598 receiving yards averaging 19.9 yards per catch and 85.4 yards per game. He is second on the team with seven touchdown receptions.
Ichabods in Non-conference Action
Since joining the NCAA ranks, the Ichabods are 23-17 in non-MIAA games. Under head coach
Craig Schurig, the Ichabods are 15-6 in non-conference games since the 2002 season during the regular season following the loss to Abilene Christian in their 2010 home opener. In non-conference regular season away games under Schurig, the Ichabods are 8-2 and in home games during the regular season against non-MIAA foes, the Ichabods are 7-4.
Red Zone Success
In the 2009 and 2010 seasons the Ichabods have been outstanding in the red zone converting on a combined 101 of 113 trips into the red zone scoring 74 touchdowns with 27 field goals. This season the Ichabods are continuing that trend scoring on 29 of 33 trips into the red zone with 23 touchdowns and six field goals. Washburn was 6 of 6 in scoring opportunities against Central Oklahoma scoring four touchdowns - all through the air.

Ian Williams who has started 30 of the last 32 games. He has appeared in 38 games recording 78 tackles with 5.5 for loss and 3.5 sacks. He has also blocked three field goal and extra point attempts including one against Emporia State on Oct. 1.

Brian Folkerts has started the last 33 games appearing in 38 for the Ichabods at left tackle and at right tackle. As a junior he started all 12 games on the left side of the line after starting 14 on the right side as a sophomore and freshman. He was named preseason All-American by the Consensus Draft Service.

Marty Pfannenstiel has played in 43 career games at Washburn and has started the last 28 games. He has 192 total career tackles after tying for the team lead with 91 tackles as a junior in 2010. He recorded his team-high third interception against Lincoln after picking off two passes against Sioux Falls in the season opener. He recorded a career-high 17 tackles against Northwest Missouri in Topeka in 2010 with 14 solo stops and two sacks with a forced fumble.

Greg Schoenberg has started 18 games at Washburn rushing for 128 yards with 19 catches for 304 yards and three touchdowns with two coming against Truman on Oct. 15. His 53-yard reception against Missouri Western was a career long. He has cleared the way for one of Washburn's six single-season 1,000-yard rushers at Washburn while recording 30 tackles on special teams appearing in 41 career games. He recorded his second rushing touchdown of his career against Lincoln.

For the five Ichabod offensive line starters, Washburn averages 6-foot-3 and 301.2 pounds while the four Bearcat defensive linemen - in a 4-3 scheme - average 6-foot-3 and 257.5 pounds. When the Bearcats have the ball, their five offensive linemen average 6-foot-3 and 288 pounds while the Ichabods four defensive linemen average 6-foot-3 and 264.3 pounds.
Contemplating Conversions
For the Ichabods this season, it has been a tale of two halves as far as third down conversions go. In the first half this season, Washburn has converted 53 percent of its 26 of 51 third down plays. While in the second half of games this season in the first two games, Washburn was only 1 of 13 on third down conversions moving the chains. Against the Lions in week No. 3, the Ichabods were 7 of 10 including an 6 of 6 fourth quarter third down conversions. Against Missouri Western, Washburn was 7 of 9 in the second half and last week against Emporia State the Ichabods were 6 of 9 in the second half and against Truman Washburn was 0 of 5 and against Central Oklahoma the Ichabods were 3 of 7 on third down to make the Ichabods 24 of 53 (45 percent) overall on third down conversions this season. Opponents are only 12 of 51 (24 percent) in first half conversions while they are completing 20 of 60 (33 percent) third down conversions in the second half.
About Northwest Missouri
The Bearcats are 6-1 this season and ranked No. 6 in the latest AFCA top 25 coaches poll after fighting off an early deficit against Eastern New Mexico to score the final 52 points of the game in a 65-20 win on Oct. 15 in Bearcat Stadium. The Bearcats are 4-1 in MIAA play with their lone loss coming against a then-ranked No. 15 Pittsburg State team in a 38-35 loss as time expired on a last second field goal in Arrowhead Stadium. The Bearcats are averaging 56.9 points per game this season while allowing 17.4 points per game for their opponents. Jordan Simmons has started all seven games at tailback for the Bearcats averaging 69.3 yards per game, but it is Nebraska Omaha transfer James Franklin who leads the squad with 80.4 yards per game averaging 6.2 yards per carry racking up 563 yards and 11 touchdowns. Trevor Adams, the reigning MIAA player of the week passed for 444 yards against Eastern New Mexico last time out and had passed for 1,269 yards completing 74 of 115 with 15 touchdowns and five interceptions completing 65 percent of his passing attempts. Tyler Shaw leads the team with 21 catches for 562 yards and eight scores averaging 80.3 yards per game. Chad Kilgore leads the team with 61 tackles - nearly double the total of DJ Gnader, who had 33 for second on the tackles chart. Kilgore also has 5.0 tackles for loss and two sacks for nine yards. As a team, the Bearcats have recorded 10 sacks for 47 yards. Northwest is 52-4 inside Bearcat Stadium since the remodel of the west side press box and stands in 2003 and the Bearcats have won their last eight games. The four loss came at the hands of Texas A&M-Kingsville (16-7 on Sept. 2, 2010); Abilene Christian (19-14 on Aug. 27, 2009); Abilene Christian (44-27 on Aug. 30, 2008) and Washburn (31-28 on Oct. 8, 2005).
Last time out for Northwest Missouri
Oct. 15, 2011 - MARYVILLE, Mo. - Trevor Adams tied a school record with five touchdown passes and threw for the second most yards in school history with 444 as Northwest Missouri State ran away from Eastern New Mexico 65-20 in non-conference football action on Saturday at Bearcat Stadium.
The Bearcats and Greyhounds traded scores early on as ENMU struck first with the first of three touchdown passes from Wesley Wood. After a blocked extra point the Greyhounds would extend their lead, but a failed two-point conversion shifted the momentum as Adams and the Northwest defense stole the show.
The win moves the Bearcats' record to 6-1 on the year setting up a top 10 match-up with No. 5 Washburn next weekend. The Greyhounds fall to 2-5 on the year and have now lost two straight.
Adams fired five touchdown passes including a game tying, 35-yard pass and catch to David Mosley to start the second quarter. Adams finished 23-of-31 as his 444 yards is second to John McMenamin (473yds vs. Central Missouri 10/27/01). His five touchdown tosses also tied a school record joining the likes of McMenamin, Blake Bolles, Travis Miles, Chris Greisen and Greg Teale.
The Greyhounds used 26 plays to build their lead while the Bearcats would tie the game on their 12th play from scrimmage when Adams found Mosley for his first score of the season. Mosley also led the Bearcats in receiving with four catches for 89 yards.
The Bearcats would get the first stop of the game as senior captain Chad Kilgore sacked Wood and forced the Greyhounds to punt. Kilgore led Northwest with 11 tackles on the afternoon and his sack was the first of four from the Bearcat defense.
Just five plays following the ENMU punt, Adams found Tyler Shaw for his team leading eighth touchdown catch of the season. The score gave Northwest its first lead of the afternoon 27-20.
Northwest would score two more times on a Todd Adolf 39-yard field goal and a 5-yard plunge from James Franklin giving the Bearcats a 37-20 lead at intermission.
With a few minor adjustments the Bearcat defense strangled the Greyhound offense holding them scoreless from the second quarter on. ENMU also only managed 94 yards of offense in the second half and one first down.
Northwest recorded three second half sacks and forced three turnovers, two fumbles and a Matt Massey interception. Massey would also recover the second fumble from the Greyhounds following Adams' second touchdown toss to Shaw.
On the first play following the turnover MIAA leading scorer, Jordan Simmons, would find an opening and outrun the Greyhound secondary to his team high 13th touchdown of the season. The score also vaulted Simmons into eighth on the all-time list for touchdowns with 31. Simmons led Northwest in rushing with 80 yards on six carries.
Northwest has now scored at least 65 points four times this season as they entered the weekend leading the nation averaging 55.5 points per game.
The win also snapped a three-game regular season losing streak to Lone Star Conference teams.

Saturday's meeting is the 32nd in the series between the Ichabods and the Bearcats. The Bearcats lead the all-time series 25-6. Overall, the Bearcats have won 18 of the last 20. In Topeka, the Bearcats have won nine straight with the Ichabods' last win coming on Oct. 8, 1994, by a score of 48-14. Since 1984, the Ichabods are 3-11 against the Bearcats in Topeka. Since 1984, the Ichabods are 2-11 against the Bearcats in Maryville. The Ichabods are the last MIAA team to top the Bearcats in Maryville winning 31-28 on Oct. 8, 2005. The last seven games have all been decided by 10 or less points with the last five of those being decided by five or fewer points and the last four by no more than three points differential. TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods handed Central Oklahoma its worst loss since the 1972 season while remaining perfect on the season at 7-0 win a 48-3 win over the Bronchos on Family Day in Yager Stadium.
Washburn scored the first points of the game after taking the opening kickoff and marching 71 yards on 12 plays as
Dane Simoneau connected with
Ryan Mertz on a 15-yard touchdown pass staking the Ichabods to a lead they would not give up the rest of the game. The teams traded possessions and after a missed field goal by Central Oklahoma,
Jeremy Linn capped 59-yard drive with a 21-yard field goal putting the Ichabods up 10-0 with 1:15 left in the opening quarter. The Ichabods defense held the Bronchos to 35 total yards in the first quarter while gaining 153 of their own.
Washburn stretched its lead to 17-0 after Simoneau found DeJuan Beard for a 17-yard touchdown score with 9:59 left in the first half. The Bronchos scored their only points of the game on the ensuing drive as Chris Robbs nailed a 40-yard field goal cutting Washburn's lead to 17-3 with 6:53 left in the opening half.
After the teams traded punts, including a career-long 67-yarder by
Aaron Hummert, Simoneau hooked up with Beard for an 8-yard touchdown score just before the half sending the Ichabods to the locker rooms with a 24-3 lead. In the first half of the game, Simoneau was 14 of 23 for 228 yards and three touchdowns while the Ichabod defense held UCO to 128 total yards.
Washburn held the Bronchos on their first drive of the second half and Washburn's Linn hit a 23-yard field goal to put the Ichabods up 27-3. After a fumble by Central Oklahoma, Washburn needed only three plays as Simoneau hit
Ronnell Garner for a 23-yard pass threading the needle between three Central Oklahoma defensive backs for another touchdown pass. Neither team scored until the Ichabods second play of the fourth quarter when Simoneau threw his fifth touchdown pass of the afternoon - this one to Beard for 9-yards out putting Washburn up 41-3.
After another UCO fumble which was caused by

Casey Curran at the Washburn 30,
Mitch Buhler relieved Simoneau at quarterback and moved the team 76 yards on seven plays hitting Garner on a 21-yard strike to cap the drive and the scoring for both teams with Washburn ahead 48-3.
Simoneau finished 19 of 31 for 338 yards with the five scores and no interceptions. Three different Ichabods pulled down touchdown passes and two had more than 100 yards receiving. Garner led the team with six catches for 127 yards and two scores while Beard had five catches for 117 yards and three touchdowns.
Sean McPherson had 120 yards on the ground to lead the Ichabods on 16 carries.
Curran led the Ichabod defense with 13 tackles including five solo stops and Hollins and
Jahmil Taylor each had nine tackles. Hummert finished with five punts averaging 49.4 yards per punt for Washburn.
Joshua Birmingham had 49 carries to lead UCO while Ethan Sharp was 22 of 36 passing for 161 yards. Christian Hood had seven catches for 64 yards.
Defensively, Washburn held the Bronchos to 303 yards on 80 plays for a 3.8 yard per play average. Washburn racked up 565 total yards averaging 7.3 yards per play. The Ichabod defense held UCO to 2 of 16 on third down conversion plays.

Saturday's game against Northwest Missouri will be the homecoming game for the Bearcats and it will be the Ichabods' second of three homecoming games this season. The Ichabods have won 25 of their last 32 homecoming match ups played on the road and in Yager Stadium. At home, the Ichabods have won their last eight homecoming games played in Topeka. The last time the Ichabods fell in a homecoming game in Topeka was on Oct. 26, 2002 in double overtime loss to Missouri Western 34-28. Washburn topped Truman on its homecoming earlier this season on Oct. 8 by a score of 42-14 and will host Fort Hays State on Oct. 29 for the Washburn homecoming game.

The Ichabods in the national polls
The Washburn Ichabods moved from No. 5 to a school-best ranking of No. 3 in the American Football Coaches top 25 poll which was released this week. Washburn also received a first-place vote for the first time ever in the AFCA rankings. The Ichabods were ranked No. 5 in the nation the last two weeks, which was the previous high-water ranking point in school history.

The Ichabods will return home to face Fort Hays State as the Ichabods will celebrate homecoming on Oct. 29 with a 1 p.m. kick. The Ichabods will then return to the road for their final regular season away game as they will take on No. 7-ranked Pittsburg State at 1 p.m. on Nov. 5 and then return home to wrap up the regular season facing Central Missouri at 1 p.m. on Nov. 12 in Yager Stadium.
