Kickoff
The Washburn Ichabods will play their first of two straight games on the road when travel down Interstate 335 to face Emporia State in the 108th meeting of the Turnpike Tussle on Oct. 1 at 1 p.m. in Welch Stadium on the ESU campus. The Ichabods (4-0, 3-0 MIAA) are coming off a nationally-broadcast 41-20 win over Missouri Western while the Hornets (1-3, 0-3 MIAA) picked up their first win of the season last time out topping Langston 35-7.

Game story lines
• Saturday's meeting will be the 108th in the series between the Ichabods and the Hornets. The series is the most-played series in NCAA Division II.
• The Ichabods are looking for their eighth-straight win in the series as they have not lost to the Hornets since a 35-28 overtime loss in Emporia on Sept. 20, 2003.
• Washburn's 42-0 win over the Hornets last season was the most-lopsided victory margin by either team in the previous 107 meetings.
• Washburn is looking for its first 5-0 start since the 1976 season when they finished the year 6-3-1.
• In Washburn's 121 seasons of football, the Ichabods have began the season 5-0 nine times.

Coaches
Washburn head football coach Craig Schurig was named head coach of the Ichabod football program Dec. 28, 2001. Schurig is 66-41 (.602) in his tenth season as the Ichabod head coach and he is 51-32 (.600) against the MIAA. He has led the Ichabods to two NCAA Playoff appearances and two bowl appearance championships as well as the 2005 MIAA regular season outright championship as well as recording seven straight winning seasons for the first time in the program's history. Schurig's 66 wins is the second-most in school history behind Dick Godlove (1946-58) who recorded 67 wins. Schurig is 8-1 against Emporia State.
Emporia State head football coach Garin Higgins has compiled a career record of 66-42 in his tenth year as a head coach. He led the Hornets to a three game improvement from 2009 to 2010. He is 15-33 in his fifth season at his alma mater including 0-4 against Washburn. He had a 51-9 career record as the head coach at Northwestern Oklahoma, including two trips to the national championship game. Higgins was a quarterback for ESU from 1987-90 and was on the 1989 national runners-up team.

Remembering Jermon
This week wearing No. 20 against Emporia State in remembrance of Jermon Watson is Devon Connors, who normally wears No. 1. Last week against Missouri Western, Corey Walker recorded a career-high six tackles with 2.5 tackles for loss and one sack of five yards in the win.

Hanging with Mr. Cooper
Senior running back Justin Cooper has rushed for 1,897 career yards and 18 career touchdowns … he moved into ninth on the all-time chart passing former running back Willie Sapp who rushed for 1,816 yards from 1995-97. This season, Cooper is averaging a career-best 5.7 yards per carry - better than his career average of 4.4 per carry.

Fear the Beard
Ichabod sophomore DeJuan Beard finished the 2010 season second in the MIAA punt returns with an 11.8 yard per return average … he also finished second on the team in 2010 with 374 receiving yards and 26 receptions adding four touchdowns. Last time out against Missouri Southern, Beard had career-highs in receiving yards (141), receptions (9), touchdown receptions (2). This season he had 18 catches for 284 yards and four touchdowns averaging 71.0 yards per game receiving. As a freshman in 2010 he had 374 receiving yards and 26 catches.

Garnering Attention
Ichabod sophomore wide receiver Ronnell Garner is second on the team with 16 receptions and 246 receiving yards averaging 15.4 yards per catch and 61.5 yards per game. He is also second on the team averaging 22.7 yards per kickoff return.

Ichabods in Non-conference Action
Since joining the NCAA ranks, the Ichabods are 22-17 in non-MIAA games. Under head coach Craig Schurig, the Ichabods are 14-6 in non-conference games since the 2002 season during the regular season following the loss to Abilene Christian in their 2010 home opener. In non-conference regular season away games under Schurig, the Ichabods are 8-2 and in home games during the regular season against non-MIAA foes, the Ichabods are 6-4.

Red Zone Success
In the 2009 and 2010 seasons the Ichabods have been outstanding in the red zone converting on a combined 101 of 113 trips into the red zone scoring 74 touchdowns with 27 field goals. This season the Ichabods have jumped out to another great start scoring on 16 of 19 trips into the red zone with 13 touchdowns and three field goals.

In the Middle
In the middle of the defensive line is senior defensive tackle Ian Williams who has started the last 29 games. He has appeared in 35 games recording 70 tackles with five for loss and 3.5 sacks.

Folk hero
Senior offensive lineman Brian Folkerts has started the last 30 games appearing in 35 for the Ichabods at left tackle and at right tackle. As a junior he started all 12 games on the left side of the line after starting 14 on the right side as a sophomore and freshman.

Man of Steel
Senior linebacker Marty Pfannenstiel has played in 40 career games at Washburn and has started the last 25 games. He has 173 total career tackles after tying for the team lead with 91 tackles as a junior in 2010.  He recorded his team-high third interception against Lincoln after picking off two passes against Sioux Falls in the season opener.

Taylor Made
Junior linebacker Jahmil Taylor started the final eight games of the 2010 season and has made 22 career starts appearing in 29 games recording 168 tackles with 15.0 tackles for loss. He tied with Marty Pfannenstiel for the team-lead last season with 91 tackles with 40 solo stops.

Showing the Way
Senior fullback Greg Schoenberg has started 15 games at Washburn rushing for 121 yards with 17 catches for 264 yards. His 53-yard reception against Missouri Western was a career long. He has cleared the way for one of Washburn's six single-season 1,000-yard rushers at Washburn while recording 28 tackles on special teams appearing in 38 career games. He recorded his second rushing touchdown of his career against Lincoln.

No Fear
Redshirt freshman Sean McPherson (pronounced Mc-Fear-son) had a 15-carry, 85-yard performance in his first game in a Washburn uniform averaging 5.7 yards per carry to lead the team on the ground against Sioux Falls in the season opener. In four career games, McPherson has averaged 7.0 yards per carry collecting 267 yards on 38 attempts with four touchdowns.

Bryce as nice
Sophomore inside linebacker is coming off a career-high-tying 10 tackles against Missouri Western tying his total from the week before against Missouri Southern. Atagi has started all four games this season after starting two as a redshirt freshman. This season he leads the team with 31 total tackles with a team-best 6.0 tackles for loss for 29 yards.

Young Bods in play this season
The Ichabods had five true freshmen appear in the game against Sioux Falls in the season opener. Left guard Dylan Ready and punter Aaron Hummert made starts while safety Calvin Kenney, wide receiver Connor Crimmins and quarterback Mitch Buhler all saw action. Buhler is the first true freshman to see action at quarterback for the Ichabods since Aaron Battle in the 1994 season. Against Lincoln, freshman defensive tackle Tyler Ewy saw his first action and recorded three tackles with one for loss.

In the trenches
For the five Ichabod offensive line starters, Washburn averages 6-foot-3 and 301.2 pounds while the four Hornet defensive linemen - in a 4-3 scheme - average 6-foot-2 and 281.8 pounds. When the Hornets have the ball, their five offensive linemen average 6-foot-2 and 283 pounds while the Ichabods four defensive linemen average 6-foot-2 and 276 pounds.

Contemplating Conversions
For the Ichabods this season, it has been a tale of two halves as far as third down conversions go. In the first half this season, Washburn has converted 68 percent of its 16 of 29 third down plays. While in the second half of games this season in the first two game, Washburn was only 1 of 13 on third down conversions moving the chains. Against the Lions in week No. 3, the Ichabods were 7 of 10 including an 6 of 6 fourth quarter third down conversions. Against Missouri Western last time out Washburn was 7 of 9 in the second half to make the Ichabods 15 of 32 overall on third down conversions this season and 14 of 19 in the second half of the last two game. Opponents are only 7 of 22 in first half conversions while they are completing 11 of 25 third down conversions in the second half. The Ichabods held the Lions to 1 of 6 on third down conversions in the second half last week.

About Emporia State
The Hornets are 1-3 this season and 0-3 in the MIAA after picking up their first win of the season on Sept. 24 against Langston 35-7. Dasor Horton leads the team with 235 yards rushing on 51 carries while LaDarrian Page is averaging 6.7 yards per attempt. Tyler Eckenrode has completed 88 of 144 passing attempts with five interceptions and five touchdowns throwing for 243 yards per game. RayRay Davis leads the team with 19 receptions averaging 7.7 yards per catch. Shjuan Richardson has averaged 21.9 yards per catch and 76 yards per game on 14 receptions to go with four touchdown receptions. Ben Carlson leads the Hornets with 29 tackles including 2.5 tackles for loss and an interception.
 
Last time out for Emporia State
Sept. 24, 2011 - Emporia, Kan. – The Emporia State defense forced six turnovers on the way to a 35-7 win over Langston (Okla.) in non-conference action on Saturday at Jones Field at Welch Stadium. The Hornets ended the game with a season low 259 yards of total offense but converted on a season high five of seven trips into the redzone. Their average starting position was the Langston 48 yard line. Tyler Eckenrode was 17 of 28 for 157 yards with two touchdowns. LaDarrian Page ended with five catches for 46 yards and a touchdown and added 20 yards on 11 carries. Derwin Hall was the leading rusher for ESU with 29 yards on three carries. Dasor Horton added 27 yards and a touchdown rushing as seven Hornets carried the football. Six Hornets caught at least two passes in the game. Series history with Emporia State
Saturday's meeting is the 108th in the series between the Ichabods and the Hornets. Emporia State and Washburn have met every year since 1899 with the exception of 1943 through 1945 because of World War II and 1989 and 1990 after Washburn moved to NCAA Division II and the Hornets remained in NAIA until 1991. The teams also played twice during the 1966 season. Emporia State leads the all-time series 51-50-6. The Ichabods have won eight of the last nine meetings and the last seven overall. The Ichabods have won the last five games played in Topeka and the last three in Emporia. The Ichabods are looking for their eighth-straight win in the series – the longest winning streak by either team in the series since ESU won 11 straight from 1991 to 2001.

Last time Meeting with Emporia State • Nov. 6, 2010
TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn seniors played their final game in Yager Stadium in style recording a 42-0 win over Emporia State in the 107th edition of the Turnpike Tussle. The win was the seventh in a row for the Ichabods in the series and the victory margin was the largest in the series history between the two schools. The Ichabod defense held the Hornets to 13 first downs in the game and 262 total yards (67 passing) while recording the first shutout for the Ichabods over the Hornets since Oct. 9, 1976 in a 21-0 win in Emporia. The Ichabods scored two touchdowns in each of the first three periods in the win.
The Ichabods took the first possession of the game and was forced to punt, but it was muffed by ESU's Brian Murphy which was recovered by Ronnell Garner at the ESU 32-yard line. Three plays and the 32 yards later Justin Cooper scored from 2-yards out putting the Ichabods out to the early lead following the extra point by Steve Ivanisevic.
After the Ichabods forced a three-and-out on the Hornet offense, Washburn would go on a 12-play, 87-yard drive taking 6:46 off the clock as Dane Simoneau hit Joe Hastings in the corner of the end zone putting Washburn up 14-0. The Ichabods had the ball for 9:58 of the first half outgaining the Hornets 125 to 32.
In the second quarter the Ichabods again would use a long drive to stretch the lead when Simoneau hit Korie Henry for a 6-yard touchdown pass wrapping up a 13-play, 75-yard drive putting Washburn up 21-0 following Ivanisevic's extra point. With 1:21 remaining in the half, senior Ben Vann picked off Sheldon Smith at the Washburn 17 and returned it 39 yards to the Emporia State 44 setting up 1-yard plunge for Simoneau with 24 seconds remaining in the first half sending the Ichabods into the halftime break leading 28-0.
Washburn forced the Hornets into a punt on their opening drive and Washburn's Simoneau passed for his school-record-breaking 58th career touchdown to DeJuan Beard on a 24-yard completing breaking Tyler Schuerman's mark from 2000-04.
The teams traded punts and Simoneau wrapped up the scoring with his fourth touchdown pass of the afternoon to Hastings from 9-yards out capping a 72-yard drive with 2:27 to go in the third quarter.
Leading the Washburn defense was Marty Pfannenstiel who had 10 tackles with six solo stops. Jared Brawner recorded eight (six solo) as did Michael Wilhoite, Jahmil Taylor and Henry. Zach Falldorf also recorded an interception.
Washburn was led on the ground by Cooper who had 84 yards on 14 carries and the first quarter touchdown. Brad Haug rushed for a season-high 63 yards on 13 attempts. Simoneau was 16 of 29 for 218 yards and four touchdowns while leaving the game after the third quarter. Cameron Kasel came in and finished 4 of 8 for 22 yards. Hastings led the team with five receptions for 43 yards and two touchdowns. Beard had three catches for 60 yards and one touchdown. Austin Hills had five punts for 217 yards averaging 43.4 yards per attempt.
Smith had 111 yards to lead ESU on 18 carries while completing 6 of 13 passes for 41 yards. Tracey Hageman had three catches for 27 yards. Defensively Josh Taylor had nine tackles.
Washburn recorded 447 yards of total offense averaging 6.2 yards per play with 207 yards coming on the ground.
The shutout was the fourth for the Ichabods under head coach Craig Schurig and the first one in Yager Stadium. The last time the Ichabods recorded a shutout was 23 games ago when they blanked the Lions on Oct. 4, 2008 in a 23-0 win over Missouri Southern

Last time out for Washburn: #8 Ichabods 41, Missouri Western 20 • Sept. 22, 2011
TOPEKA, Kan. -- The No. 8 Washburn Ichabods outscored the Missouri Western Griffons 31 to 7 in the second half while holding the Griffons to 111 total yards in the frame en route to a 41-20 win improving to 4-0 for the first time since the 1986 season.
The Ichabods scored on their first possession when Dane Simoneau hit DeJuan Beard on a fourth-and-ten from the Griffon 31 yard line putting Washburn up 7-0 with 5:23 to play in the first quarter.
Missouri Western cut into the lead when Greg Zuerlein hit a 28-yard field goal with 13:29 to play in the first half. On Washburn's next drive, the Ichabods drove down to the Griffon four-yard line but the drive stalled and Jeremy Linn connected on a 22-yard field goal with 8:46 to play in the half stretching Washburn's lead to seven at 10-3.
After a big return on the kickoff, the Griffons took over at their own 47-yard line and moved the ball to the Washburn 10, but the defense held and Zuerlein hit another field goal - this time from 27 yards out with 7:27 to play in the half cutting the Ichabod lead to 10-6.
On the Ichabods' next drive the Griffons forced a turnover, Missouri Western took the lead when Travis Partridge hit Adam Clausen on an 11-yard pass play putting the Griffons up 13-10 entering the halftime break.
In the third quarter the Ichabods retook the lead at 17-13 on a Sean McPherson 5-yard touchdown run with 8:43 to play. After a Devon Connors' interception of Partridge, Washburn then drove 60 yards in nine plays and Simoneau hit Tore Hurst on a 15-yard strike with 2:20 remaining in the third quarter. Washburn's defense held the Griffons to 16 total yards while the Ichabod defense racked up 207 yards while controlling the ball for 9:42 of the quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Jeremy Linn put Washburn up 27-13 with a 36-yard field just into the period. The Griffons came right back when Partridge connected with Tyron Crockum on a 7-yard pass reception cutting the Ichabod lead to 27-20. However the Ichabods returned serve with a 53-yard, six-play drive capped by a Simoneau pass to Ronnell Garner from three yards out making the score 34-20. The Washburn defense held Missouri Western on their next drive on fourth down and Washburn scored six plays later when Simoneau tossed his fourth touchdown of the game - this time to Hurst from 30-yards out wrapping up the scoring for both teams with a 41-20 Ichabod lead.
Washburn recorded 25 first downs in the game compared to 17 for the Griffons while outgaining Western 473 to 276 holding the Griffons to the 111 second half yards. Washburn gained 113 yards on the ground and 360 through the air.
Simoneau finished 23 of 39 from the field for 360 yards and four touchdowns throwing to nine different receivers led by Matt Kobbeman's five catches for 89 yards. Justin Cooper led the Ichabods on the ground with 102 yards on 23 carries.
Jahmil Taylor had 13 tackles with two tackles for loss and a forced fumble while Willie Williams and Bryce Atagi each had 10 tackles while Atagi added an interception and two pass break ups.
Partridge finished 18 of 31 for 165 yards and two scores with TJ Fannin recording seven catches for 55 yards. Michael Hill had 57 yards on the ground on 19 carries.
Jeremy Weston had 10 tackles to lead the Griffons on defense.

lifted the Ichabods to 509-553-44 in their football history … moved the Ichabods to 4-0 on the season for first time under head coach Craig Schurig  and for the first time since the 1986 season … moved the Ichabods to 3-0 in MIAA for the second time under Schurig and the first time since the 2005 season … moved the 17-21-2 all-time against Missouri Western …  snapped a two-game losing streak to the Griffons … moved the Ichabods to 3-0 on games played on Thursday night this season.

The Ichabods in the national polls
The Ichabods remained No. 8 in the AFCA Coaches Poll for the seconds straight week which was released on Sept. 26. Washburn has been ranked in the top 25 or has received votes for the top 25 poll in each of the last 20 weeks. The No. 8 ranking is the highest the Ichabods have been in the AFCA poll since the Nov. 1, 2005 poll when the Ichabods reached No. 5 in the nation.
