Ichabod men's hoops squad to face streaking Bearcats on Saturday

  Opening Tip
•     The Washburn Ichabods will open a four-game road trip starting on Saturday, Jan. 10 at Northwest Missouri where the Ichabods will take on the Bearcats in a 3:30 p.m. start in Bearcat Arena.
•    The Ichabods (8-9, 3-3 MIAA) had their two-game winning streak snapped against No. 8 Central Missouri last time out on Jan. 5 in Topeka.
•    The Bearcats (12-2, 5-1 MIAA) currently sit on top of the MIAA standings after topping Nebraska-Kearney 80-48 at home on Thursday. 
•    Kyle Wiggins became the 22nd person to go over the 1,000-point mark for his career against the Mules  and he now has 1,016 points in four years … his point total is 17th all-time at Washburn as he passed Jeff Markay (1,002), Charles Brehm (1,004), Dave Hull (1,100, Leonard Conkleton (1,011) and Shannon Kruger (1,014) in the game against Central Missouri … next on the scoring chart is Travis Robbins (1,050) and Ron Ford (1,055) who rank 16th and 15th on the all-time chart.
•    Alex North needs 63 points to reach 1,000 for his career entering the game with 937 points. In Washburn's 110-year of men's basketball, only 22 players have reached the 1,000-point mark. 
•    Prior to Kyle Wiggins hitting the milestone, the last Ichabod to go over 1,000 points in a career was Will McNeill, who did it during the 2011-12 season en route to 1,701 career points which is third all-time at Washburn.
•    The Ichabods have never had two different players go over the 1,000-point mark in the same season.
•    The Ichabods will then have a week off their next game when they will face Pittsburg State on Jan. 22. Washburn will then have road games at Central Oklahoma on Jan. 22 and at Northeastern State on Jan. 24 before returning home on Jan. 29 to face Nebraska-Kearney on Jan. 29 and Fort Hays State on Jan. 31.  
•    The Ichabods have 30 regular season games scheduled this season and also had three exhibition games against NCAA Division I members Kansas, Kansas State and Oklahoma to have 33 games before the MIAA Tournament starts.
•    Ichabod freshman David Salach was a high school teammate of Northwest Missouri's Kyle Harrison at Blue Valley Northwest High School where they won a state championship as seniors.
•    The Ichabods have used nine different starting line ups this season.
    
 Bod Notes
•    Alex North has recorded 13 double doubles in his career at Washburn … he scored his 900th career point against Lindenwood and has played in 103 games with 70 starts … he went over the 600-rebound mark for his career against Central Missouri … he has 937 career points averaging 9.1 ppg in his career and 5.9 rpg at Washburn … his 103 career 3-pointers at Washburn rank 11th all-time and he needs six more to move into the top 10 … his 604 career rebounds rank seventh all-time at Washburn and he needs 15 more to move into sixth all-time at Washburn … he has reached double figure scoring in 42 games as an Ichabod.
•    Kyle Wiggins has averaged 9.9 ppg in 103 games making 61 starts … he went over the 1,000-point mark against Central Missouri … he also has gone over the 200-rebound mark for his career and has 218 and he went over the 200-assist mark in Hawaii and has 225 for his career … his 1,016 career points rank 17th all-time at Washburn … he became the seventh Ichabod to record at least 1,000 points and have 200 assists in a career.
•    Ichabod junior Christian Ulsaker is averaging 6.8 points with 4.5 rebounds a game this season seeing his first action in almost a month against Baker last time out after suffering a broken jaw against Missouri Southern … he recorded his first career double double against Peru State with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
•    The Ichabods have hit at least one 3-pointer in 327 games … the last game the Ichabods did not hit a 3-pointer was Dec. 30, 2003 at Missouri Western.
•    Algie Key had a season-high 22 points in the loss at BYU-Hawaii adding a season-high five assists … he is averaging 9.0 points and 4.1 rebounds a game in his first season at Washburn after transferring from Alabama.
•    Turon Parker is scoring 6.8 ppg this season adding 29 assists and 11 steals in his first season as an Ichabod … he had a season-high eight rebounds against Tabor … he has missed the last four games after injuring his knee against Lincoln.
•    Kevin House leads the team with 34 assists this season while adding 5.1 points and 1.7 rebounds per game … he is 36 of 42 from the free throw line this season for a team-high 86 percent.
•    Jeremy Lickteig scored a career-high 19 points against Northwest Indian College going 9 of 10 from the field … he made his first career start against BYU-Hawaii.
•    The Ichabods are 103 of 316 from 3-point range this season with Kyle Wiggins hitting a team-high 23 of 60 attempts … Alex North has hit 17 of 54 attempts and Andy Wilson has hit 14 of 36 attempts … Ichabod opponents are 130 of 353 from 3-point range this season … in the last three games Wilson is 8 of 14 from 3-point range.
•    Brady Skeens recorded a season-high 14 points in his second game of the season against Tabor after having his planned redshirt pulled prior to the Rockhurst game … he has averaged 4.2 ppg and 3.4 rpg making four starts.
•    David Salach has started the last nine games and has averaged 4.2 rebounds a game this season and he is averaging 6.0 rebounds per game in MIAA play, which leads the Ichabods during league play.
•    Washburn is 233 of 353 from the free throw line for a 66 percent average while their opponents are 262 of 366 hitting 72 percent of their charity stripe attempts … in MIAA play the Ichabods improved to 86 of 117 from the line for a 74 percent average.
•    As of the last basketball stat reporting for NCAA Division II, the Ichabods ranked 236 of 350 teams in free throw percentage.
•    Washburn is fifth in the nation in total rebounds with 578 and 15th in the nation with 128 steals.
•    Washburn is +3.0 in rebounding margin and have been outrebounded in only four games this season.
•    The Ichabods have outscored their opponents 543 to 456 in the first half of games, but have been outscored 633 to 619 in the second half of games.

 Last Time Out For The Ichabods
Central Missouri 63, Washburn 60 • Jan. 5, 2015
TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabod men's basketball team trailed by as many eight points and tied the score at 48 with under five minutes to play and led by two with 4:19 to play but could not hold on in a 63-60 loss to No. 8-ranked Central Missouri.
The Ichabods and Mules were tied at 48 with 2:46 to play after a pair of free throws by Alex North, but the Mules scored five-straight points taking a 53-48 lead. Washburn cut the lead back to four at 53-49 on a free throw by Kevin House. Three free throws by the Mules stretched the lead out to seven before a 3-point play by Kyle Wiggins with 53 seconds to play trimmed the lead back to four.
The Mules went back ahead by seven with 42 seconds to play before a lay up by Wiggins with 33 seconds to play cut the lead back to five and then after a Washburn steal House hit two more free throws with 29 seconds to play.
The Mules then scored two more to take a 61-56 lead with 15 seconds to play. A layup by Wiggins with nine seconds to play made it a 61-58 Central advantage. After a pair of Mules free throws with eight seconds to play the Ichabods' Wiggins was fouled attempting a three. He hit the first two making the score 63-60 and after intentionally missing the third the clock ran out on the rebound before the Ichabods could get another shot off.
Wiggins led the Ichabods with 22 points as he went over the 1,000-point mark in his career becoming the 22nd Ichabod to do so. House had 13 points, which was a career-high for him.
Brennen Hughes and Kyle Wolf had 12 to lead the Mules.
Washburn was 20 of 51 overall after going only 8 of 20 from the field in the first half. The Mules finished 18 of 42 overall from the field and went 23 of 32 from the free throw line including 20 of 26 in the second half from the charity stripe. Washburn finished 14 of 20 overall from the free throw line. 

 About Northwest Missouri
•    The received votes in this week's NABC Top 25 coaches poll.
•    Enter the game with a 12-2 overall record and 5-1 MIAA mark after beating Nebraska-Kearney 80-48 on Jan. 8 in Maryville.
•    The lone MIAA loss for the Bearcats came on Dec. 6 in Pittsburg 69-67. The other loss was in their season opener at home in a 75-66 loss to MSU-Moorhead on Nov. 14.
•    Justin Pitts leads the team in scoring at 16.9 ppg. Connor Crooker is scoring 13.9 ppg followed by Zach Schneider at 13.1 ppg and Grant Cozad at 12.4 ppg. Schneider has hit 47 percent of his 3-point attempts connecting on 52 of 109 attempts.
•    As a team the Bearcats are shooting 46 percent from 3-point range hitting 130 of 284 overall while shooting 50 percent from the field.
•    The Bearcats are allowing 64.6 ppg while scoring 79.5 ppg.

 Series History with NWMSU
•  Saturday's meeting will be the 96th between the two schools and Washburn holds a 59-37 lead in the series. 
•  Washburn has won eight of the last 14 including the last four of the last eight in the series. 
•    The Bearcats have won the last two meetings.
•  The series dates back to the 1940-41 season and they have played each other every year since WU joined the MIAA in 1989-90. 
•  The Ichabods are 21-9 against the Bearcats in Lee Arena and have won five of the last sevem at home. 
• Since the 1956-57 season, Washburn is 20-20 in Maryville and since joining the MIAA during the 1990-91 season, the Ichabods are 11-10 on the road. 
•  In the MIAA Tournament, the Ichabods are 3-4 against Northwest last meeting in the 2008 semifinals with the Bearcats winning 50-49. 
•  In the NCAA Tournament, the Ichabods are 2-1 against the Bearcats after winning in the first round of the NCAA tournament in 2012 in Wichita Falls. 
•  The Ichabods won a regional final contest against the Bearcats in Topeka on March 10, 2001 advancing to the Elite Eight in Bakersfield, Calif., after a 67-61 win.

 Last meeting with Northwest Missouri
(Jan. 11, 2014) TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods lost at home for the first time this season as Northwest Missouri rallied from a 14-point halftime deficit to top Washburn 83-76 on Schendel Court at Lee Arena. 
Washburn (11-3, 4-3 MIAA) led 42-28 at the break after shooting 48 percent from the field while holding the Bearcats to 8 of 27 shooting for a 30 percent average as three different Ichabods scored at least eight points. 
In the second half, the Bearcats (10-5, 5-1 MIAA) scored the first six points of the frame cutting into the Washburn lead and continued on a 12-4 run over the first 3:13 of the half while the Ichabods were holding a 46-40 lead with 16:50 to play. Washburn pushed the lead to as many as 11 with 15:21 to play on a 3-pointer by Alex North, but again the Bearcats rallied to cut the lead back to four at 53-49 with 11:32 to play. Washburn then pushed its advantage back to 12 at 61-49 with 8:45 to play after a putback by Jeremy Lickteig.
The Bearcats would then go on a 17-2 run over the net 4:45 as the Ichabods went cold from the field hitting only 1 of their next eight shots while the Bearcats would go 11 of 12 from the free throw line and 3 of 4 from the field to take a 66-63 lead with four minutes to play.
Kyle Wiggins had a lay up to cut the lead back to one, but Washburn's DeShaun Cooper hit a three to push the margin back to four. North responded with a 3-pointer of his own to trim the margin back to one. After a bucket by the Bearcats, Wiggins hit another 3-pointer to tie the game at 71 with 1:32 remaining.
Cooper connected on a layup with 1:15 to play and Wiggins hit two free throws to tie the score back at 73. However a 3-pointer by Cooper stretched the lead back to three and after a pair of Bearcat free throws with 22 seconds left Washburn would get no closer than four the rest of the way as the Bearcats added two free throws with 0.9 seconds to play after a video review pushing the final margin back to seven at 83-76.
Wiggins led four Ichabods in double figures with 22 points while Leon Flowers scored 15 and North added 13 with nine rebounds. Korey Fisher scored 10. Coner Crooker scored 19 to lead the Bearcats.
Washburn was outrebounded 43 to 34 in the loss as the Bearcats scored 17 second chance points in the game. The Bearcats finished 28 of 34 from the free throw line while the Ichabods were 13 of 18.

 Last time out for Northwest Missouri
Northwest Missouri shot .586 from the field on the evening as they picked up a victory at home over Nebraska-Kearney. NWMSU scored 50 points in the paint including 15 off of turnovers as they moved to 5-1 in the league.
 For the Bearcats Justin Pitts led the way scoring 19 points and dishing out four assists while Anthony Woods pulled down seven rebounds. Matt Wallace had 14 points while Grant Coazad and Brett Dougherty each finished with 13 points. For the Lopers Isaiah McKay had 10 points and Trey Lansman pulled down six rebounds. Ethan Brozek also added 10 points to go along with five rebounds and two steals. Northwest led 41-25 at the break.

•     The Ichabods are 1475-993-4 (.591) all-time in the 110th year in the program's history.
•     Washburn is the eighth-winningest program in NCAA Division II history by victories.
•     Washburn is the winningest MIAA program since the 1989-90 season with an overall record of 524-239 since joining the conference and the NCAA.
•    The Ichabods have recorded 25 20-win seasons and they have one 30-win seasons after going 35-4 during the 1986-87 NAIA Championship season.
