Ichabod baseball team 10-0 for 1st time since 1948 season

TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabod baseball team moved to 10-0 for the first time since the 1948 season when they outscored Bemidji State 22-3 at Falley Field on Thursday. The Ichabods will face Pittsburg State starting a four-game set on Friday returning to MIAA play.

The 1948 team finished the season 10-0 as game by game records only go back to the 1947 season.

Washburn scored three runs in the first and second innings jumping out to a 6-0 lead. Corey Gragg drove in a pair of runs with a 2-RBI single and Riley Krane hit a solo home run in the inning. In the second, Washburn had an RBI single by Krane as well as RBI by David Gauntt and Connor Crimmins on an RBI double.

The Ichabods were scoreless until adding a solo run in the fourth taking advantage of an error by the Beavers before exploding for eight runs in the fifth inning including Washburn's fifth grand slam of the season in 10 games by Cole Gardner. The NCAA record is nine set by Armstrong during the 1988 season in 54 games played. Washburn also had RBI by Zame Mapes in the inning and Alex Head had a 2 RBI single as well.

In the sixth inning, Washburn scored six more runs after the Beavers scored a pair of runs in the top of the sixth. The Ichabods took advantage of six Beaver walks in the inning Wes Jones, Luke Dimick, Mapes and Dylan Turpin all recorded RBI in the inning.

The Beavers added a solo run in the seventh before the game ended with the Ichabods winning 22-3.

Kyle Carnahan scored three runs for Washburn and Krane, Gardner, Landon Hay, Jones, Luke Dimick and Mapes all scored twice. Gardner had 4 RBI and Head finished with three.

On the mound, Dan Gabler picked up the win holding the Beavers without a hit as BSU finished with four on the day committing five errors.
