JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The Washburn Ichabods men's track and field team wrapped up the third and final day of the MIAA Outdoor Championships with a seventh-place finish scoring 67 points bringing back its second individual champion in its outdoor history along with three school records and five NCAA provisional marks at Lincoln University on Sunday.
Braden Rose became the second Ichabod to win an individual title at the MIAA Outdoor Championships when he won the discus with a mark of 53.27m (174-09) earning 10 team points. He joins
Connor Last who won the long jump in the 2022 outdoor championship as the only two individual champions at the MIAA meet.
Also in the discus,
Mitch Miller finished fifth with a mark of 49.93m (163-10) to gain four team points.
Justice Akinmoladun found his way to the podium with a third-place finish in the shot put breaking his own school record picking up six points with a mark of 17.14m (56-03.00) for an NCAA provisional mark and
Braden Rose secured one team point with an eighth-place finish with a throw of 15.65m (51-04.00)
The Ichabods tallied nine points in the high jump as
Jordan Dale cleared the seven-foot barrier with a personal best and school record of 2.15m (7-00.75) to finish fourth gaining five team points and
Alessandro Di Gregorio was fifth with a personal best of 2.09m (6-10.25) for four points. Both marks were NCAA provisional jumps.
Di Gregorio also placed in the triple jump with a sixth-place finish to gain three team points with a mark of 14.33m (47-00.00).
Wyatt Heiman pulled down five team points for the Ichabods after finishing sixth in the 200m with a time of 21.42 and he was also seventh in the 100m with a time of 10.67.
Ja'Laveyn January was fourth in the 100m with an NCAA provisional mark of 10.43 scoring five team points.
The Ichabod relay teams also return to Topeka with two school records in both the 4x100m and the 4x400m relay. In the 4x100m relay, the team of
Davion Gardenhire, January, Heiman, and
Tyler Mooney finished sixth in a time of 41.04 breaking the previous school record of 41.34 to score three team points. The 4x400m relay team of Gardenhire, Mooney,
Jacob Herr, and
Konner Verbeck was ninth overall but topped the school record by nearly four seconds in a time of 3:17.75 in a record that has stood since 1968.
Gabriel Chinya was sixth in the 1500m run in a time of 3:50.48 recording a personal best scoring three team points.
Of Washburn's 67 team points, the throwers accounted for 26 points with the jumpers scoring 15 and the distance racers recording 13 and the sprinters scoring 10.
Pittsburg State won the team title with 184.50 points followed by Missouri Southern (106), Lincoln (92), Central Missouri (83), Northwest Missouri (82), Fort Hays State (79.50) and Washburn (67). Nebraska-Kearney was eighth with 63.50 points with Emporia State (44.50) in ninth with Missouri Western (15) in tenth.
Washburn is scheduled for its final regular season meet of the year next week at the Loper Last Chance qualifier on May 13 prior to NCAA bids are announced the following week for the NCAA D2 Championships May 25-27 in Pueblo, Colo.
