Ichabod men's basketball team returns to action with Rockhurst Saturday

  Opening Tip
•     The Washburn Ichabod men's basketball team will step out of MIAA play for the next two games as they will face Rockhurst on Saturday, Dec. 13 in Kansas City before returning home to take on Tabor on Monday night in Lee Arena.
•    Washburn is 4-6 and 1-1 in the MIAA after  falling to Missouri Southern 87-61 on Dec. 6 in Lee Arena.
•    Rockhurst is 3-4 this season and 0-1 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play after getting beat by Emporia State 92-63 on Dec. 6.
•    The Hawks have played two other MIAA schools losing to Missouri Western 66-60 and to Northwest Missouri 82-58 at the Hillyard Classic in St. Joseph.
•    The Ichabods are making their first trip to Mason-Halpin Arena since Dec. 4, 2003 when the Ichabods won 69-54. The Ichabods topped the Hawks 74-56 on Nov. 20, 2012 in the Sprint Center as part of the CBE Hall of Fame Classic in Kansas City.
•    Christian Ulsaker will miss the next six to eight weeks after suffering a broken jaw against Missouri Southern.
•    The planned redshirt of Brady Skeens has been pulled and he will suit up against Rockhurst on Saturday. He will wear No. 13.
•    The Ichabods have 30 regular season games scheduled this season and also had three exhibition games against NCAA Division I members Kansas, Kansas State and Oklahoma to have 33 games before the MIAA Tournament starts.
•    The Ichabods have used six different starting line ups this season.
•    Washburn will host a home game with Tabor on Dec. 15 prior to returning to MIAA play against Lincoln on Dec. 18 in Jefferson City.
    
 Bod Notes
•    Alex North has recorded 13 double doubles in his career at Washburn … he has scored his 800th career point against Southwestern and has played in 96 games with 63 starts … he went over the 550-rebound total against the Southwest Baptist and enters the Rockhurst game with 862 career points averaging 9.0 in his career … he missed the final two games in Hawaii with an ankle injury.
•    Kyle Wiggins went over the 800-point mark for his career against Minnesota State earlier this season … he has averaged 9.3 ppg in 96 games making 54 starts … he has scored 891 career points at Washburn … he needs one rebound to reach 200 for his career and he went over the 200-assist mark in Hawaii and has 212 for his career.
•    Ichabod junior Christian Ulsaker is averaging 7.9 points with 5.1 rebounds a game this season … he recorded his first career double double against Peru State with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
•    The Ichabods have hit at least one 3-pointer in 320 games … the last game the Ichabods did not hit a 3-pointer was Dec. 30, 2003 at Missouri Western.
•    Algie Key had a season-high 22 points in the loss at BYU-Hawaii adding a season-high five assists … he is averaging 8.9 points and 4.0 rebounds a game in his first season at Washburn after transferring from Alabama.
•    Turon Parker is scoring 6.7 ppg this season adding 20 assists and nine steals in his first season as an Ichabod.
•    Stephon Drane is averaging 5.8 ppg and 2.4 rpg this season … he missed the final two games in Hawaii with a knee injury.
•    Kevin House is third on the team with 20 assists this season while adding 4.3 points and 1.8 rebounds per game … he is 20 of 24 from the free throw line this season.
•    Jeremy Lickteig scored a career-high 19 points against Northwest Indian College going 9 of 10 from the field … he made his first career start against BYU-Hawaii.
•    The Ichabods are 58 of 191 from 3-point range this season with Kyle Wiggins hitting 10 of 26 attempts … Ichabod opponents are 83 of 219 from 3-point range this season.
•    Washburn is 146 of 229 from the free throw line for a 64 percent average while their opponents are 171 of 243 hitting 70 percent of their charity stripe attempts.
•    As of the last basketball stat reporting for NCAA Division II, the Ichabods ranked 266 of 350 teams in free throw percentage.
•    The Ichabods and their opponents have each been called for 207 fouls this season.
•    Washburn is +2.1 in rebounding margin and have been outrebounded in three games this season.
•    The Ichabods have outscored their opponents 344 to 323 in the first half of games, but have been outscored 423 to 404 in the second half of games.
•    The 26-point loss to Missouri Southern was the worst loss by the Ichabods in Lee Arena and the fourth-worst loss by the Ichabods since moving to NCAA Division II. The Ichabods lost 90-64 on Jan. 14, 2006 to Southwest Baptist.
•    Prince Samuels has left the Ichabods. He was averaging 5.4 points and 2.5 rebounds a game in eight games this season making one start.

Washburn Ichabod head basketball coach Bob Chipman 
•     is in his 36th season at the helm of the Ichabods.
•     a 1973 graduate of Kansas State earning both his undergraduate and master's degree in Manhattan.
•     is 761-320 overall.
•     has 520 wins since the Ichabods joined the MIAA, the most of any conference school since the 1989-90 season.

Rockhurst head basketball coach Bill O'Connor
•  is 268-299 in his 21st season at Rockhurst. He has been coaching basketball on the high school, junior college and college level for the past 40 years.
• O'Connor is the winningest coach in the history of Rockhurst basketball with 268 victories. Eight of his teams have qualified for postseason play, while 11 of his teams at Rockhurst have won 15 or more games in a season.
•  A graduate of Rockhurst High School, O'Connor received a B.S. in history from St. Benedict's College (now Benedictine College) in 1972. He earned his master's in education from Emporia State University.
•  Before being named the head coach at Rockhurst in 1994, O'Connor was the head coach at Colby (Kan.) Community College. He was an assistant coach at Rockhurst from 1982-86 and coached at Texas-Pan American.

 Last Time Out For The Ichabods
Missouri Southern 90, Washburn 64 • Dec. 6, 2014
TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods men's basketball team fell behind 21-7 after the second media timeout and could not recover as Missouri Southern picked up an 87-61 win on Saturday in Lee Arena. 
The Lions shot 55 percent in the game and 59 percent in the second half en route to the 26-point win. After the Lions jumped out to the 21-7 lead in the opening frame, the Lions would go on to lead by 18 at the break taking a 37-19 advantage into the locker room. Washburn was held to 7 of 31 shooting in the first half going 1 of 9 from 3-point range.
In the second half, the Lions would go on to lead by as many as 29 points riding a 6 of 11 performance from 3-point range leading to the win as the Ichabods would get no closer than 16 in the stanza.
Alex North led the Ichabods with 14 points adding seven rebounds as the only Washburn player who would reach double figures. David Salach had seven rebounds and Kyle Wiggins scored nine points. Cameron Wiggins came off the bench to score eight points hitting all three shots including both 3-point attempts. 
The Lions had six player reach doubles figure-scoring as Taevaunn Prince and Blaine Miller each had 17.
The Ichabods finished 20 of 58 from the field overall going 6 of 21 from 3-point range. Washburn did hit 15 of 20 free throw attempts in the game.

 About Rockhurst
•     Rockhurst is 3-4 on the season with three of the losses to MIAA teams. 
•    Dominique Washington leads three Hawks in double figures at 12.1 points per game and Josh Roberts and Adam Fatkin average 10.1 ppg. 
•    Roberts leads the team with 14 3-pointers in 29 attempts shooting 48 percent from deep.

 Series History with Rockhurst
•      Saturday's meeting will be the 57th in the all-time series.
•      Washburn leads the all-time series 30-26.
•      Washburn has won 13 of the last 15 meetings.
•    The Ichabods and the Hawks have only played three times since the 2005 season, but played every year between 1992 and 1999.
•    The Ichabods have won six of the last seven meetings played on the Hawks' home court.     

 Last meeting with Rockhurst
(Nov. 21, 2013) TOPEKA, Kan. -- A 24-3 run over a nine minute stretch of the second half turned a three-point deficit into a 16-point lead as the Ichabods improved to 5-0 with a 79-70 win over Rockhurst on Thursday night on Schendel Court at Lee Arena. 
The Ichabods trailed by as many as six in the first half as the Hawks (2-2) took a 40-36 lead into the halftime break behind 56 percent shooting while forcing the Ichabods into seven turnovers while they held a 10-2 advantage in fastbreak points. 
Washburn chipped away at the Hawks' lead and would overcome the margin when Jeff Reid's tip in pulled Washburn within three at 50-47 kickstarting the 24-3 swing. Kyle Wiggins scored seven in the run while Leon Flowers, Alex North and Andy Wilson all hit 3-pointers while Wiggins added two of his own during the Washburn stretch with Washburn going up 69-53 with 5:56 to play which was its largest lead of the night.
The Hawks hit two 3-pointers in the final 56 seconds to trim the margin back to single digits as the ichabods took the 79-70 win taking their 26th-straight regular season non-conference victory.
Stephon Drane led the Ichabods with a season-high 18 points off 6 of 9 shooting from the field pacing four total Ichabods in double figures. Wiggins had 16 points and a career-high seven rebounds while North recorded his fifth double double of his career and the third in five games this season with 12 points and a game-high 13 rebounds, which also tied a career high. Reid finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds recording his first double double at Washburn with a career-best on the boards against Rockhurst.
Brandon McCann had 19 to lead the Hawks and James Robinson had 13 points hitting double figures.
Washburn held a 41-28 advantage on the glass and outscored the Hawks 38 to 16 in the paint.
