Ichabods wrap up Oklahoma swing at NSU on Saturday

Opening Tip
•    The Washburn Ichabods will wrap up a four-game road swing as they travel to Tahlequah, Okla., to face Northeastern State on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
•    The Ichabods (10-10, 5-4 MIAA) won a 68-60 decision at Central Oklahoma on Thursday snapping a four-game slide in Edmond.
•    The RiverHawks (4-13, 2-8 MIA) snapped a five-game losing streak beating Emporia State 67-57 at home on Wednesday.
•    The Ichabods are 1-4 against the RiverHawks and are 0-2 in games played in Tahlequah.
•    Kyle Wiggins became the 22nd person to go over the 1,000-point mark for his career against the Mules  and he now has 1,061 points in four years … his point total is 15th all-time at Washburn passing Ron Ford against Central Oklahoma. Next on the chart is Todd Alexander (1990-93) and Tom Carlson (1944-49) who each scored 1,099 points ranking tied for 14th overall.
•    Alex North needs 42 points to reach 1,000 for his career entering the game with 958 points. In Washburn's 110-year of men's basketball, only 22 players have reached the 1,000-point mark. 
•    The Ichabods have never had two different players go over the 1,000-point mark in the same season.
•    The Ichabods will return home on Jan. 29 to face Nebraska-Kearney on Jan. 29 and Fort Hays State on Jan. 31.  
•    This season Kyle Wiggins is averaging 13.4 ppg, but scoring 18.0 ppg during MIAA play.

•    Alex North has recorded 14 double doubles in his career at Washburn with his last one coming against Northwest Missouri on Jan. 10 … he scored his 950th career point against Pittsburg State and has played in 106 games with 73 starts … he went over the 600-rebound mark for his career against Central Missouri … he has 958 career points averaging 9.0 ppg in his career and 5.9 rpg at Washburn … his 104 career 3-pointers at Washburn rank 11th all-time and he needs five more to move into the top 10 … his 627 career rebounds which is sixth all-time at Washburn and he needs 11 more to move into the top five … he has reached double figure scoring in 43 games as an Ichabod.
•    Kyle Wiggins has averaged 10.0 ppg in 106 games making 64 starts … he went over the 1,000-point mark against Central Missouri … he also has gone over the 200-rebound mark for his career and has 227 and he went over the 200-assist mark in Hawaii and has 232 for his career … his 1,061 career points is 15th all-time at Washburn … he became just the seventh Ichabod to record at least 1,000 points and have 200 assists in a career.
•    Ichabod junior Christian Ulsaker is averaging 6.2 points with 4.1 rebounds a game this season seeing his first action in almost a month against Baker last time out after suffering a broken jaw against Missouri Southern … he recorded his first career double double against Peru State with 10 points and 10 rebounds and made his third start of the season against Central Oklahoma.
•    The Ichabods have hit at least one 3-pointer in 330 games … the last game the Ichabods did not hit a 3-pointer was Dec. 30, 2003 at Missouri Western.
•    Algie Key had a season-high 22 points in the loss at BYU-Hawaii adding five assists … he is averaging 9.2 points and 4.0 rebounds a game in his first season at Washburn after transferring from Alabama.
•    Turon Parker is scoring 6.8 ppg this season adding 34 assists and 14 steals in his first season as an Ichabod … he had a season-high eight rebounds against Tabor … he has missed the last four games after injuring his knee against Lincoln returning to action against Northwest Missouri.
•    Kevin House leads the team with 38 assists this season while adding 4.6 points and 1.8 rebounds per game … he is 36 of 43 from the free throw line this season for a team-high 86 percent.
•    Jeremy Lickteig scored a career-high 19 points against Northwest Indian College going 9 of 10 from the field … he made his first career start against BYU-Hawaii.
•    The Ichabods are 117 of 368 from 3-point range this season with Kyle Wiggins hitting a team-high 27 of 70 attempts … Alex North has hit 18 of 62 attempts and Andy Wilson has hit 18 of 49 attempts … Ichabod opponents are 155 of 412 from 3-point range this season.
•    Brady Skeens recorded a season-high 14 points in his second game of the season against Tabor after having his planned redshirt pulled prior to the Rockhurst game and recorded a season-high four blocks against Central Oklahoma.
•    David Salach has started nine games this season has averaged 3.5 rebounds a game this season and he is averaging 5.0 rebounds per game in MIAA play, which is second behind Alex North's 6.3 rebounds in during league play.
•    Washburn is 275 of 420 from the free throw line for a 65 percent average while its opponents are 293 of 413 hitting 71 percent of their charity stripe attempts … in MIAA play the Ichabods have improved to 128 of 184 from the line for a 70 percent average while opponents are 113 of 163 in MIAA play for a 69 percent average.
•    Washburn is +2.0 in rebounding margin and have been outrebounded in eight games this season.
•    The Ichabods have outscored their opponents 648 to 569 in the first half of games, but have been outscored 789 to 752 in the second half of games.

Northeastern State head basketball coach Jason Tinsley

 Last Time Out For The Ichabods
Washburn 68, Central Oklahoma 60 • Jan. 23, 2015
EDMOND, Okla. -- The Washburn Ichabods jumped out to an early double digit lead and fought back after Central Oklahoma regained the lead in the second half and took the lead back for good with under five minutes to play in a 68-60 win over the Bronchos. The win snapped a four-game losing streak in contest played in Edmond and was the first win over UCO since a 101-94 win on Nov. 20, 2004.
Washburn (10-10, 5-4 MIAA) led 37-28 at the break after jumping out to the early 15-point lead at 20-5 with 12:54 to play in the opening half.
The Ichabods shot 42 percent from the field in the first half hitting 14 of 33 shots and 6 of 12 shots from 3-point range as all nine players who checked into the game in the frame scored led.
Washburn went on to lead by as many as 13 with 15:30 to play in the game before the Bronchos (12-7, 5-5 MIAA) used a 9-0 run to cut the Ichabod advantage to four at 46-42 before a free throw by Korey Fisher stopped the run with a free throw, however UCO tied the game and took the lead at 49-47 with 11:24 to play. 
UCO took the lead at 52-49 with 10:37 to play after a 3-pointer. Neither team would score until a layup by Christian Ulsaker cut the UCO lead to 52-51 with 8:29 to go in the game.
The teams traded baskets and Kyle Wiggins put Washburn up 55-54 with 5:42 to play in the game. Six straight points by Andy Wilson off a layup and a 3-pointer with 3:32 to go put the Ichabods up 63-55.
Fisher then hit four free throws with 47 seconds to play and Turon Parker hit two more with 37 seconds to play putting Washburn up 67-57. A 3-pointer by the Bronchos cut the lead to seven with 28 seconds to play. Alex North connected on a free throw with 18 seconds to play and after a UCO turnover Washburn ran out the clock picking up the eight-point win.
Wilson led the Ichabods with 14 points going 4 of 8 from 3-point range. Fisher, Kyle Wiggins and Parker each had 11 points. North had a game-high eight rebounds adding five points.
Garen Wright scored 18 to lead the Bronchos.
Washburn finished 25 of 66 from the field after shooting 11 of 33 from the field in the second half. 
The Bronchos shot 40 percent in the second half and finished the game 21 of 59 overall for a 36 percent average.
Each team finished with 43 rebounds as both squads had 34 defensive and nine offensive rebounds. 
Washburn returns to action on Saturday at Northeastern State in Tahlequah, Okla., with tip scheduled for 3:30 p.m. 

 About Northeastern State
•    The RiverHawks are 4-13 and 2-8 in the MIAA after topping Emporia State last time out 67-57 on Jan. 21.
•    The win over the Hornets snapped a five-game losing streak.
•    Demone Harrison leads the team with 11.8 ppg. Michael Harmon, who was averaging 19.2 ppg in nine games but has missed the last eight games with an injury.

 Series History with Northeastern State
•      Saturday's meeting will be the sixth all-time between the two schools and the RiverHawks lead the all-time series 4-1.
•     The teams split the regular season games in 2013-14 and the RiverHawks won 79-75 in a first round MIAA Tournament game in Topeka on March 4, 2014.
•      The Ichabods and RiverHawks played in the second round of the NCAA Tournament with Washburn falling 64-59 on March 15, 2003 in Stephenville, Texas.
•      The RiverHawks went on to win the NCAA National Championship in 2003.
•     Washburn is 0-2 in games played in Tahlequah falling 85-78 on Jan. 19, 2013 and 69-58 on Feb. 15, 2014.

 Last meeting with Northeastern State
(March 4, 2014) TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods trailed by double digits in the first half and rallied to take the lead in the second half but could not make it hold up as Northeastern State used a run of its own to pull out a 79-75 win over the Ichabods ending Washburn's season at 17-10.
After trailing by as many as 13 in the first half, the Ichabods chipped away at the RiverHawks lead in the second half using a 23-9 run over a 9:25 stretch of the second half to turn a 48-44 deficit with 17:58 to play in the game into a 65-57 advantage with 8:45 to go. During the run the Ichabods held the RiverHawks (15-12) to 2 of 10 shooting while Washburn was 9 of 15 to pull infront. However the RiverHawks would outscore the Ichabods 22-10 the remainder of the game taking the four-point win.
During the RiverHawks final scoring run, Washburn was held to 2 of 10 shooting while the RiverHawks hit 7 of 8 shots including 3 of 3 3-point attempts. Washburn tied the score at 71 with 3:48 to go, but Washburn missed its last four field goal attempts and the RiverHawks were 2 of 3 hitting a 3-pointer in the process securing the win.
Washburn was led by Kyle Wiggins who scored 24 points and Alex North recorded a double double with 20 points and 13 rebounds. It was North's 10th double double of the season and the 12 of his career. He finished the season with a team-high 16.1 ppg average and 10.0 rpg average becoming only the sixth Ichabod to average a double double during the season and the first since Clarence Tyson did during the 1993-94 season. Korey Fisher scored 11.
Landon DeMasters led five RiverHawks in double figures with 21 points.
The Ichabods shot 48 percent from the field hitting 28 of 59 shots while the RiverHawks were 24 of 46 for a 52 percent average. Washburn was outshot at the free throw line 22 of 28 by NSU compared to 12 of 16 for the Ichabods. Washburn held a 36 to 23 advantage on the glass holding the RiverHawks to three offensive rebounds..

 Last time out for Northeastern State
(Jan. 21, 2015) TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The Northeastern State men's basketball team halted a five-game losing skid with a 67-57 victory over Emporia State Wednesday night inside the NSU Event Center.
 The RiverHawks improved to 4-13 overall and 2-8 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, while the Hornets dropped to 9-9 on the year and 2-7 in the MIAA.
 Junior forward Dakota Caudill posted a career-high 20 points for the second-consecutive game. He finished 8 of 14 from the field, while adding five rebounds in 27 minutes. Senior guard Keon Littleton came off the bench and registered 16 points and five steals. Junior guard Trey Mohair played all 40 minutes and filled the stat sheet with seven points, four assists, four steals, three rebounds and one block.
 NSU shot 51.1 percent (24-for-47) from the field, which marked the third time this year the RiverHawks shot at least 50 percent in a contest. They also boasted a 50-percent scoring clip (8-for-16) from downtown and a 78.6 percent (11-for-14) margin at the free-throw line. ESU shot 39.1 percent (18-for-46) overall, which was the second-lowest percentage shot against Northeastern State this season. The Hornets also shot 37 percent (10-for-27) from distance and 78.6 percent (11-for-14) at the line.
 Micah Swank led Emporia State with 19 points, but the rest of the visiting starters combined for just 20 points total.
 The opening 10 minutes of play was back and forth, and the visitors were able to take a marginal 14-12 advantage into the second media timeout of the first half.
 A dunk from Caudill at the 8:52 mark sparked an 8-0 run over the next four minutes that put NSU on top by six, and the RiverHawks held that lead until a three from Swank at the buzzer gave the home side a 28-25 halftime lead.
 A quick 6-0 run in the early parts of the second half gave Emporia State a 34-32 lead, but Northeastern State converted on a pair of buckets on its next two possessions and never trailed again.
 The Hornets were able to keep the game within reach for the majority of the second half, but a 7-0 run late by NSU put away the visitors and allowed the RiverHawks to secure the 10-point triumph.
 NSU dominated the points in the paint (26-14), points off turnovers (20-8) and steals (12-5). The RiverHawks also had fewer turnovers (9-18) and finished with more assists (17-13) and more bench points (24-18). The Hornets outrebounded NSU 33-22.
 
 Ichabod basketball history
•     The Ichabods are 1477-994-4 (.591) all-time in the 110th year in the program's history.
•     Washburn is the eighth-winningest program in NCAA Division II history by victories.
•     Washburn is the winningest MIAA program since the 1989-90 season with an overall record of 526-240 since joining the conference and the NCAA.
•    The Ichabods have recorded 25 20-win seasons and they have one 30-win seasons after going 35-4 during the 1986-87 NAIA Championship season.
