Ichabod track and field teams resume season with Washburn Rust Buster

WHO'S COMING TO TOPEKA
There are 65 teams are scheduled to compete in Topeka on Friday with 970 total student-athletes entered overall, counting for a total of 1,519 entries. Washburn will have a total of 41 women competing in 13 events and the men will have 48 competing with 16 total events.
 
In the rankings
The Washburn Ichabods were picked third in both MIAA Preseason Indoor Coaches Poll released by the league on Dec. 4. The first national polls will come out Jan. 27.

MEN - TOPEKA, Kan. – The Washburn Ichabod men's track and field team opened the 2025-26 indoor season, breaking multiple school records, earning NCAA provisional marks, and posting a slew of personal bests across sprints, jumps, and multi-events at the Sneed Indoor Athletic Facility and in Pittsburg State at the Crimson and Gold Invitational.
In the triple jump, Justin Forde set a meet record, winning the event with 14.98m (49-01.75) and earning an NCAA provisional mark picking up the Ichabods' lone win of the afternoon.
Tayveon Simms clocked 6.82 to finish 10th, hitting an NCAA provisional mark and setting a personal record. Peyton Holmes added a PR with a time of 6.94 for 26th, while Javier Lopez ran 7.10. Simms continued his standout effort in the 200m, running 22.04 for 22nd and another PR. Crayton Rauch (29th, 22.28) and Holmes (28th, 22.22) also contributed solid marks, with Rauch setting a PR.
The 400m was the highlight of the meet as Bryce Cochran shattered the school record, running 48.06 to place second, earn an NCAA provisional mark, and set a personal best. Jake Muller (6th, 49.26), Tucker Groh (7th, 49.42), and Samuel Baxter (15th, 50.82) all recorded PRs, while Noah McCoy finished in 51.88. The 4x400m relay team of Baxter, Cochran, Muller, and Rauch placed 4th in 3:17.06.
In the middle distances, Brayden Peek broke the school record in the 600-yard run, finishing 5th in 1:11.99. In the 800m, Seth Motes ran a PR of 2:05.48 for 8th, followed by Landon Stuke in 12th at 2:08.03.
Washburn's high jump squad dominated the invite section, with Matthew Heckman and Jordan Dale tying for 2nd at 2.09m (6-10.25), both earning NCAA provisional marks. Aaron Newcomer and Slade Smith cleared 2.04m (6-08.25) for PRs and provisional marks.
In the long jump, Zuri Glenn led the Ichabods with a mark of 6.93m (22-09.00) for 10th, followed by Holmes (14th, 6.74m), Rauch (19th, 6.55m), and Michiels (23rd, 6.43m).
At the Crimson and Gold Invitational at Pittsburg State, Adam Wooldridge cleared 5.20m (17-00.75) for 3rd and an NCAA provisional mark in the pole vault. Logan Schwab finished 10th at 4.75m, while Caden Caplinger and Eli Strawn each cleared 4.45m for PRs.
In the heptathlon, Drew McGilton scored 5,040 points for 2nd and an NCAA provisional mark, while Judah Bowell finished 3rd with 4,977 points, also provisional and a PR.

Women-TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn women's track and field team opened the season at the Washburn Alumni Invitational, that was highlighted by an NCAA provisional mark, a meet record, and a wave of personal bests across sprints, jumps, and relays.
McKenzie Hayse led the way in the 60m dash, qualifying for the finals with a time of 7.56 in prelims before finishing 2nd in the finals at 7.54, hitting an NCAA provisional mark. Lyric Reid also advanced to the finals, placing 7th in 7.72. The Ichabods showed depth in the event with Maya Pattison (12th, 7.75), Kamdyn Wedel (15th, 7.80), Kyra Ray (17th, 7.84, PR), Layla Lerus (27th, 7.95, PR), and Kynleigh Chard (62nd, 8.30, PR).
Hayse continued her strong day in the 200m, winning the event in 24.32, just shy of the school record. Washburn dominated the top 10 with Kereser Augustin (7th, 24.68, PR), Pattison (8th, 24.70, PR), Reid (9th, 24.98, PR), and Isabella Kupka (10th, 25.09, PR). Kamdyn Wedel (12th, 25.39, PR) and Mellanie Neudinger (16th, 25.77, PR) added depth, while Lerus (28th, 26.03, PR) and Addison Webster (74th, 28.75, PR) rounded out the group.
The 400m was another standout event as Kereser Augustin set a meet record, winning in 55.46 and earning an NCAA provisional mark. Kupka finished 3rd in 57.39 (PR), while Kennedi Knowles (12th, 59.73, PR), Natalie Hillebert (14th, 1:00.10, PR), and Andria Williams (16th, 1:00.50, PR) all posted personal bests. Ashtyn Collins added a time of 1:02.01 for 22nd. In the 600-yard run, Ashley Heavner placed 13th in 1:30.51.
In the 4x400m relay, Collins, Heavner, Hillebert, and Knowles combined for a 6th-place finish in 4:01.53.
Washburn excelled in the field events as well. In the high jump, Alex Hart cleared 1.71m (5-07.25) for 2nd and an NCAA provisional mark. Molly Worley set a PR at 1.60m (5-03.00) for 3rd, while Shaydin Myers (12th, 1.50m, PR) and Sheronika Simeon (14th, 1.50m) added strong efforts. In the long jump, Hayse placed 5th with a PR of 5.70m (18-08.50), followed by Kyra Ray (6th, 5.54m, PR) and Neudinger (8th, 5.48m, PR).
In the pole vault, Blair Brennan set a PR at 2.95m (9-08.00) for 11th.
At the Crimson and Gold Invitational at Pittsburg State Reagan Housley cleared 3.60m (11-08.75).
 
UP NEXT
The Ichabods indoor track and field teams will return to action on Jan. 23 at the Rumble in the Jungle at Pittsburg State before returning to the Sneed Indoor Athletic Facility at Washburn for the two-day Washburn Open starting Jan. 30.
