Last Time Out For The IchabodsEmporia state 62, Washburn 59 • Feb. 4, 2015
EMPORIA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods fell behind by 18 points in the first half then rallied to tie the score with 10 seconds to play before ESU hit a 35-foot shot off the backboard at the buzzer for the heartbreaking 62-59 Washburn loss.
The Ichabods (11-13, 6-7 MIAA) held the Hornets (11-11, 4-9 MIAA) without a field goal for the final 9:08 of the game until the winning before the winning heave by the Hornets.
Washburn trailed 22-4 with 10:13 to play in the first half helped in part by a 12-0 start by the Hornets who held the Ichabods scoreless the first 5:34 of the game.
The Ichabods shot 9 of 24 in the first half overall while the Hornets shot 14 of 34 from the field in the frame.
To start the second half, the Ichabods used a 7-0 run to cut the Hornet lead to five with 16:51 to play in the game, but the Hornets responded with a 12-2 run of their own over the next 2:51 to push the lead back to 15 at 50-35 with 11:34 to play.
Washburn cut the lead back to eight with 7:50 to play after a pair of free throws by
Algie Key as he scored six-straight points for the Ichabods over a 56-second time frame trimming the Hornet advantage to 52-44.
The Hornets went back up 11 with 7:21 to play halting the Ichabod run after an ESU player was fouled on a 3-point attempt at 55-44.
After two more free throws by Key with 6:30 to play, the Ichabods trailed by nine at 55-46. Both teams came up scoreless on their next possessions, but a free throw by
Kevin House with 5:04 cut the Ichabod deficit down to eight at 55-47.
Two free throws by
Alex North with 4:26 pulled Washburn within six at 55-49. Washburn would go and cut the lead down to five after a 3-point play by Key with 2:58 to play at 57-52 and then to 57-53 after a free throw by North with 2:00 remaining.
A free throw by
Kyle Wiggins with 1:40 trimmed the Hornet lead to three at 57-54 and after a timeout by Emporia State and a missed 3-pointer, Washburn went to the line with 29 seconds remaining and Key hit both free throws cutting the lead to 57-56.
The Ichabods fouled coming out of the timeout sending ESU to the line with 25 seconds as Terrence Moore hit both free throws pushing th lead back to three at 59-56.
Key hit one of two free throws with 20 seconds to play and the Ichabods fouled the Hornets with 10 seconds to play.
The Ichabods tied the score after an ESU miss but Jay Temaat hit a 3-pointer with one second left for the winner.
Key finished with 21 points to lead the Ichabods hitting 11 of 14 free throws and North and House each had 10.
Korey Fisher had nine.
Temaat had 14 to lead the Hornets.
The Ichabods held the Hornets to seven field goals in the second half in 24 attempts and finished 21 of 58 overall. Washburn was 19 of 46 after going 10 of 22 in the second half.

Last meeting with Nebraska-Kearney(Jan. 29, 2015) TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabod men's basketball team fell in overtime to Nebraska-Kearney 87-86 on Thursday on Schendel Court at Lee Arena in a game which saw 16 lead changes and 19 ties.
Neither team scored in the first minute of the overtime period until
Christian Ulsaker hit a pair of free throws with four minutes to play in the game staking the Ichabods to a 78-76 lead. The Lopers hit a layup and a 3-pointer and added a free throw over the next 1:39 as UNK took an 82-78 lead with 1:19 to play. A 3-pointer by
Alex North with 57 seconds to play cut the lead to one. UNK would go up by four with nine seconds to play and then with three seconds left a layup by
Kyle Wiggins cut the lead to two at 85-83. After a quick foul by the Ichabods, the Lopers hit two free throws to go up four 87-83 and Wiggins hit a 3 at the buzzer to cut the final margin to one as time expired on Washburn.
Washburn (10-12, 5-6 MIAA) and the Lopers (13-5, 8-3 MIAA) were tied at the half as well at 34 each after neither team would lead by more than six in the game.
Wiggins led all scorers with a game-high 28 points on 10 of 17 shooting from the field playing a career-high 41 minutes. North scored 17 adding nine rebounds to move his career point total to 996 as an Ichabod.

Christian Ulsaker each scored nine and Ulsaker recorded a career-high six assists and career-high four steals.
Algie Key had a career-high three blocks.
Ethan Brozek led five Lopers in double figures with 23 points. Connor Beranek had 19 and Ty Danielson had 15.
Washburn was 30 of 63 for the game for a 48 percent average while the Lopers were 31 of 63 for a 49 percent clip. The Lopers shot 46 percent from 3-point range going 10 of 22 overall while Washburn was 5 of 15. The Ichabods were 21 of 27 from the free throw line while the Lopers finished 15 of 22. The Lopers also held a 34 to 32 advantage on the glass turning 12 offensive rebounds into 13 second chance points.
Last time out for Nebraska-Kearney(Feb. 5, 2015) Kearney, Neb. – Freshman forward Trey Lansman scored a season-high 35 points but Fort Hays State closed on a 21-10 run to beat Nebraska Kearney, 88-77, Thursday night in Kansas.
This was the 121st all-time meeting between the Lopers (13-7, 8-5) and Tigers (14-8, 7-6).
In a game with 13 lead changes and 10 ties, Lansman (Harlan, Ia.) made two free throws with 5:29 left to give the UNK its last lead of the night, 68-67.
Senior guard James Fleming quickly followed with a bucket and, after UNK missed a three, junior post reserve Dom Samac (Croatia) converted a three-point play and then senior guard Achoki Moikobu sunk a triple to start at 15-4 Tiger spurt.
Over the last 5:29, Hays was 6 of 8 from the field (2 of 4 threes) and 7 of 9 at the line.
Playing its sixth straight game minus leading scorer Craig Nicholson due to injury, Hays got 25 points, nine rebounds and two assists from Samac (6-9, 215 lbs.). Twenty-two of those points came in the second half.
To reach his total, he was 10 of 14 from the field (1 of 2 threes) and 4 of 6 at the line. Playing 23 minutes, four of his boards came at the offensive end as Hays finished with a plus 10 rebounding margin, 36-26.
Next, Fleming tallied 23 on 7 of 10 (3 of 5 threes) field goal shooting and a 7 of 9 effort from the charity stripe. Like Samac, he more than doubled his season average of eight points. Finally for the Tigers, Moikobu had 10 of his 17 points after the break.
Lansman was hot all night, going 10 of 17 (2 of 6 threes) from the floor and 13 of 13 at the line. Fouling out late, he had 19 points in the second half that included 10 made free throws.
This is the most points by a UNK true freshman since Nick Svehla went for 36 in a 2000 road win at Regis. Also, this is the most points scored by a Loper against Hays in 17 years.
Reigning MIAA Player of the Connor Beranek (Ravenna) had 15 points and five rebounds with junior forward Ethan Brozek (Norfolk) limited due to foul trouble. He finished with eight points, a team-best eight boards and four assists.
Off the bench, Pierce freshman Lane Rohrich had eight points with Nevada senior Davion Pearson having a team-high five assists and five points..
